I agree with you on every single one of those players except for Frolov. I don't think he is worth us offering valuable cap space for. Now Ville Leino, I'd offer him 4 years/2.5-3 million.

Should remove Frolov from the list - he signed a 3-year deal with Avangard in May.

I would love to see Bieksa with the Habs. Besides Kesler, he's my favourite Canuck.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Leino - I like him, and I'd rather he not stay long enough in Philly to become a goon.

Of course I want Bieksa to play beside Markov, but I really doubt Vancouver will let him walk.

He's been pretty straightforward and said that he doesn't want to leave Vancouver. Just like Ehrhoff and Salo, he'd even be willing to stay at a discount. I'd love to have Bieksa or Ehrhoff in Montreal but I really doubt they're going anywhere.

Buzz around Ehrhoff is that he's more interested in the money than in staying, whereas Bieksa's made it pretty clear he wants to stay, even at a discount.

Interesting, I heard on TSN even Ehrhoff was willing to take a paycut. The clip I'm referring to is from last week though, maybe things have changed in the meantime. I certainly wouldn't mind adding Ehrhoff :)

I read that in... it was either the Province or the 24hrs, on Friday, so take it for what it is.

I think the Canadiens will be active come July 1st. It's the easiest way to improve the team without hurting it.

If the Habs sign Gorges,Weber,Markov and Wisniewski they won't have room for another defenceman. If Jagr signs that would pretty much seal the deal until next summer.Garon instead of Auld perhaps as backup but that's all she wrote.

TSN is reporting that clubs and agents are being told the salary cap is rising to $64 million next season, with a floor of $48 million. $5 million increase.

Who do we sign with the extra cash, Markov or Wiz? I think I would go with Wiz, I like Markov, but there are concerns about his knee. Florida needs to spend 30 million just to reach the floor, Gomez could help them with that problem and we could then afford both, get her done PG.

we have 16.5ish right now, after signing Patches. So, 21.5 going forward if it goes up the 5M. Not too bad, we can still make a decent signing.

Or two perhaps ;)

21.5 million is more than enough to get the players the Habs really need IMO... could be an exciting summer.

Agreed!

The only problem is that everyone else has that extra room now, too... meaning that we could see some pretty steep overpayment for some of the free agents. Even if we can afford them this year, a few bad long-term contracts could still severely handicap us going forward.

The extra cash also means that a few players will stay where they are, because clubs will be able to give them the raises that they want, because it seems to me not many players actually want to change teams. So I think we will see the free trade market shrink.

GO HABS GO

That could also translate to less demand and less competition over what players remain... no?

The floor is very interesting. Too bad Gomez' salary doesnt decrease significantly this year (goes down to $5.5m with a cap hit of $7.3 next year) because there are several teams (8 i believe) who are right at, or below that $48m floor. Several of them are very cash poor teams so the idea of having a guy on the roster that will put them well over the league minimum but only cost them a part of that money in "real" dollars has to be appealing. The fact that he can still be serviceable makes a trade a definite possibility. the question is whether or not a team would take him now - possibly for nothing or future considerations, rather than next year when he may have some interest from multiple teams.

With the cap going up by $5m its probably less crucial that we move Gomez this summer, but think of what we could do with the extra $5m AND $7m of Gomez' salary.

If this were at all feasible, Montreal could get into the bidding for Brad Richards, and I can certainly get behind that!

you may see one or two bottom 6 role players added but not much beyond that
