Proposed Alignment Changes

Recommended Posts

On the fan590 they were saying today that Montreal, Pittsburgh, Florida and Tampa may have been the four teams to object. On the Florida teams, it's more about travel and clearing customs so much now that they're in a conference with Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto.

Those teams are all plausible as far those who may have objected. I expect they definitely all came from the East.

The board of governors is mostly owners, correct? I'm not sure why Tampa and Florida would object. Sure customs and travel might be a mild inconvenience, but they're getting a great deal being in a conference with Montreal, Toronto, and Boston. There are no better teams to create interest in hockey, and it's money in the bank.

I also wonder what Montreal and Pittsburgh would have to complain about...?

Sounds like any info out there about who voted against the proposal is pure speculation. Bob McKenzie and Pierre Lebrun have no idea, but if they had to guess they both picked NYR as a possibility. McKenzie also thought perhaps Tampa. Reasons unknown. It will be interesting to see if some concrete info ever comes out.

Well, in regards to the Florida teams, imagine having to go from Ottawa to Montreal back to Boston, down to Florida, up to Toronto back across to Buffalo. It's a headache. The schedule maker isn't going to make it easy, we know how the schedule maker works.

In terms of Montreal and Pittsburgh, well you're now in a tougher spot to make the playoffs. Travel probably has something to do with it for Montreal because now you have to charter more flights per year. Where you only had to worry every other year about going to the west, now it'll be every year. You also have to fly to Florida more each year. For Pittsburgh, they're in a stacked conference, they have to fight the Rangers Flyers Capitals Hurricanes Devils and Islanders for a playoff spot. The Devils/Canes/Islanders aren't going to be garbage forever.

Yeah I hadn't thought of that, but time will tell how that works out. As it is now, it's been awhile since we've met anybody in our new conference (other than Boston) in the playoffs. I don't foresee it getting old any time really soon. And really, the playoffs are playoffs. It's probably going to be exciting no matter who we play.

ya buts thats the downside to this whole thing, same teams gonna be meeting year after year in the first 2 rounds basically

NHL delays realignment after NHLPA refuses consent

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=610343

The National Hockey League announced today that it will not move forward with implementation of the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format recently approved by the NHL Board of Governors for the 2012-13 NHL season because the NHLPA has refused to provide its consent.

"It is unfortunate that the NHLPA has unreasonably refused to approve a Plan that an overwhelming majority of our Clubs voted to support, and that has received such widespread support from our fans and other members of the hockey community, including Players," said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. "We have now spent the better part of four weeks attempting to satisfy the NHLPA’s purported concerns with the Plan with no success. Because we have already been forced to delay, and as a result are already late in beginning the process of preparing next season’s schedule, we have no choice but to abandon our intention to implement the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format for next season."

"We believe the Union acted unreasonably in violation of the League’s rights. We intend to evaluate all of our available legal options and to pursue adequate remedies, as appropriate."

As a result of the League’s decision today, the NHL will maintain its current alignment and Playoff Format for the 2012-13 season.
