WinnipegJet
An incredibly important but sometimes forgotten aspect to the game is a team's ability to kill penalties and take advantage of power-plays. Like (or don't like) what you're seeing? Have any ideas for the team or other things PK- and PP-related that you want to chat about? Discuss here! BeanCountingHab
Great thread idea. If we say Markov and PK are our #1 PP pair, what are your thoughts on the second unit? Weber without a doubt when he's in the line-up. I think if Spacek is playing, here's his chance to add some value to that contract. It's also possible one of Markov or PK could eat up almost a full 2 minutes if the PP is going well. Using a forward on the point is also an option and could be an opportunity to work AK into the mix, even if he isn't necessarily the forward that plays there. We've been talking with Weep for 2 years now about how AK should be at the point on the second unit and it was actually tried last year for a game I believe. I'd like to see JM try it for at least 5 games and see how it pans out. AK has a bullet of a shot and a lot of teams are using 4 forwards on the PP nowadays. GreekHockeyCoach
would love to have AK on the point. I just hope he can get back if the puck squeaks by. One thing I noticed about him last year in particular is his speed. When he wants to, he can be one of the fastest players out there so I wouldn't worry about him getting caught. RSD
Too much passing last season and not enough shots. They need to fix that. I know we were a better PP team than 5 on 5, but that's not saying much in the greater scheme of scoring. Top 10 in the league aside, the PP at times was frustrating as hell to watch. I hope they can come up with a couple different looks to send out on the ice for PP's so teams don't figure our one style out and shut it down. Hard to have an effective PP when your PP QB is on the IR. PK did help out quite a bit, so did Wiz. But we definitely needed markov last season, didn't help that Cammy was struggling last season either. If Marky stays healthy, we should have a good PP unit. We still have Pleks, Moen, Gill and Gorges for the PK and of course Price in nets, so our PK should be about the same as last year. Once again, I feel we are going to see how much hammer meant to this team in those kind of situations.

boxman
I don't know how much Yemelun was used on the PP or PK, but I won't be surprised to see him used in either situation. If Gill / Gorges is pairing 1 on the PK, who's pairing 2? Subban, Spacek, Markov, Yemelin?
maddienmike
I know how important the PP and Pk are,and we have one of the best Pk in the league but that is because they spend so much time on the PK,they have to be one of the best,it's ridiculous some of the calls made against us,I remember when Benny was called for lifting some ones stick, they were praising that in the playoffs, but all that aside we have to stay out of the box,and what will our special teams be like with a new assistant coach who ever it is.I like AK on the point he has such a shot, and of course they will always do too much passing all teams do,but if Pleks could make that move he did a couple of times this year when he skated out from the boards and shot, that was great but we need to get some one near the net at all times on the PP and some one to keep the net clear on the kill,Carey gets so mad pushing them aside. We started last season with an awful PP hope that doesn't happen again, and I really hope we stay out of the box more so we get to play five on five we won't look so dismal then with five on five, the penalties we take are my biggest worry and we don't get so many short handed goals, since they have started marking Pleks so well,he doesn't get so many chances on the breakaway. There that's my rant  GO HABS GO
NewfoundlandHab
I would like to see a forward on the point on the PP. We have a lot of offensively talented forwards who deserve PP time. Outside of our top 6, we have Eller, DD, and AK who I'd like to see out there. AK has a wicked shot and could be good on the point but he fans on one timers WAY too much which could lead to shorthanded chances. Could Eller fit in on our right point on 2nd PP unit? jennifer_rocket
Whatever happens with the PP, I just hope that the Pleki playing point experiment has ended... FOREVER Oh please yes! He looked so uncomfortable out there on the point. With Markov back, Yannick Weber, presumably, getting a full year, PK Subban getting more time... Well, hopefully we don't need to see Plekanec back there anymore. I would still be more in favor of throwing Andrei Kostitsyn back there. Not for play-making, but for his hard shot. BigTed3
We'd have to pair him with Markov or subban then, both are better defensively its just a matter of whos faster I'd rather see Weber paired with Subban. We saw how Subban did well playing with the big right-handed shot in Wisniewski and I think that set-up can be beneficial again. It gives PK more space to work with if the offence has to respect the shot on the other side and PK can use that space to force players out of position and create advantages for us down low. Similarly, I think Markov would be fine playing opposite a let-handed shot, since Markov is more of a passer and he can play the left side of the ice effectively while the left-handed shooter would have the middle of the ice to tee up from. In our case right now, we don't have too many options, but the most intriguing would be Emelin. He has played the PP before but I don't know how good his shot is. Spacek is not much of a shooter but can play the point too and the last alternative would be to go to a forward, although I'm not a huge fan of that idea. I don't know that we have a forward with a big enough shot AND enough vision AND who's responsible enough to play the point.

Good point, I think Subban is also fairly good on the defensive aspect, a point where Weber is not so good. I think they could compliment each other quite nicely. NewfoundlandHab
Markie will get his own share of PP goals too, not just setting them up That's even more exciting! When he's not pinching, scoring goals from the slot or the crease, he'll be sending PK some sweet D to D passes for one timers. Lots of forwards who could get PP time this year too. So many options. BigTed3
That's even more exciting! When he's not pinching, scoring goals from the slot or the crease, he'll be sending PK some sweet D to D passes for one timers. Lots of forwards who could get PP time this year too. So many options. I'd actually prefer to see Markov and Subban split up, and see Weber paired with one of them as the shooter. The issue will be who the 4th PP D man will be: Spacek? Emelin? Gorges? A forward? But amongst the first 3, there will be some space created at the point and shooting lanes open if we move the puck around up top. What will be key is finding a player on each of the two shifts who is willing to stand in front of the net and make those open shots more difficult for the goalie to stop. Pacman did it last year, but we'll have to wait and see if he hasn't lost that will. Cole is a big enough body too. AK46 has all the potential but has never been a front-of-the-net guy consistently. Maybe now that he's coming up for UFA status, he'll be more willing to work. Or will we be left going back to a guy like Darche or White. Any of those guys could really help us out on the PP if they're willing to accept the role of the crease-filler. Tim Kerr and Dino Ciccarelli and Tomas Holmstrom made great careers out of banging home rebounds from the crease, and the Habs' PP coaching needs to focus on finding two guys who will play that role for us. We have the point-men. We have the forwards who can pass (Pleks, DD, Gomez) or play the role of a perimeter winger (Gio, Cammy), but what will make or break us is getting the guy who is willing to sacrifice his body in front of the net. I've said it for years, it's not rocket science but it does take the will to get the job done.
grecohab
Some bold thoughts... 1st PP unit: Markov with Kostitsyn at the point, Cammalleri with Plekanec at the wings and Cole in front of the net. 2nd PP unit: Subban with Weber at the point, Gomez with Gionta at the wings and Pacioretty in front of the net. This formation has the advantage of keeping all 7 scoring forwards involved in a PP, without adding a defensive defensemen with PP time (Gorges,Gill). Of course there is a matter of the productivity that Spacek and Emalin can provide at the point, but i wouldn't keep my hopes so high. Also if Kostitsyn plays in the 3rd line, as speculated, you have to give him some quality PP minutes, in order to deliver his numbers, in a contract year , avoiding rust and unhappiness. I also think that he has developed his defensive aspect of the game the last couple of years, so i wouldn't worry with him being the last man rushing back, covering a breakaway. 1st PK unit: Moen with Plekanec at front, Gorges and Gill at the back. 2nd PK unit: White with Desharnais at front, Markov and Emelin at the back. As much as i hate to see Pleckanec logging PK minutes, he excecutes this role so effectively, that you can't just ignore it. The Gorges-Gill combo may be one of the best in the league, as shown in the past, and the only concern might be the efficiency in PK by the role players such as White, Desharnais, Eller, Emmelin. They have to come out strong in order the team to finish in the top-5 in the PK (%).
