MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of defenseman Andrei Markov to a three-year contract (2011-12 to 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased that Andrei has made the decision to pursue his career with the Montreal Canadiens. A player drafted and developed by our organization, Andrei brings a high level of talent and leadership to our team. We look forward to having him back in our lineup for the start of the upcoming season,” said Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier.

Markov, 32, completed in 2010-11 his 10th season with the Canadiens in the NHL. The defenseman registered three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in seven games. He served four penalty minutes and maintained a +2 plus/minus differential, while averaging 22:54 seconds of ice time per game. Markov suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee on November 13 against Carolina.

Since 2000-01, Markov has registered 366 points (81 goals, 285 assists) in 623 NHL regular-season games. The 6’0’’, 209 lbs defenseman has recorded 361 penalty minutes and maintained a +31 plus/minus differential. Markov has scored 41 of his goals on the powerplay and two on the penalty kill. He has accumulated 18 points (3 goals, 15 assists) in 49 career NHL playoff contests.

A native of Voskresensk, Russia, Markov was the Canadiens’ sixth pick (third round, 162nd overall) at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He was part of the Russian team at the 2006 Torino and 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

It's big news so I thought it was worthy of it's own thread, if a Mod disagrees they can lock it.

We'll leave it for a couple of days.

----------------------

Nothing official about the $ but it's being circulated that the three years are for the same salary he already had ie 5.75M

I'm not a Gauthier fan so he won't be getting any kudos from me until he actually walks on water.

I've been pretty pleased up to now since he's come aboard.

On the plus side, we got him signed. That's the most important thing. I'm not terribly impressed that we gave him 3 years without his taking a slight drop in his salary, but I guess that's life. The bottom line is that there is now a lot of pressure on Markov to show he has recovered fully from his surgery and that he is able to play at his pre-injury level. If not, the organization and the fans will have every reason to be as upset with Markov as they are with Gomez.

On the positive side, he'll have training camp and pre-season to get into game shape at the same rhythm as the rest of the group instead of jumping into action late fall.

Yes that's what I think, and I don't think he will let us down,he must know that we have a lot of faith in him after all that's happened,he will repay that faith, that is the character of the man,as I said in the Markov thread makes next season seem farther away, until we get to see our Markov play

GO MARKOV GO

He's been injured an awful lot throughout his career, and I'm not entirely sold on this deal. I would have liked to see one year, or a little less money. We need his kind of money to get more durable defensemen. We still suffer a lot when he's not in the lineup, even though Subban has helped a lot. We're taking a big chance on a guy who has shown he has problems staying healthy.

Maybe $4-5 million would have been reasonable? And CRB gets to end her Markov watch.
