hatethosebruins
Lost their new arena vote. Not the end on LI, but it's getting closer. Clearly LI didnt see the bigger picture on the hundreds-thousands of jobs that would be created with that project.

Nine1One
ok Maybe he noticed that they aren't that bad. Ok so You have Dipietro, Nabokov, Montoya. Season starts out as Dipietro starter , back up Nabokov. This is to speed up the eventual injury that befalls dipietro. This injury will allow Nabokov to take over, and bring back montoya as a back up.

Well, at least it's not likely that the Isles will use six goalies this year, right? I think if they get their stuff together they might be a playoff threat. Hopefully we're not fighting for eighth. Forever_Habs10
Islanders heading north? Pat Hickey cautions Quebec City hockey fans to not get their hopes up. "NHL commissioner Gary Bettman also weighed in and repeated his assertion that the league would do everything in its power to keep the Islanders on Long Island. The clear signal here is that Bettman and the NHL see Long Island as Phoenix rather than Atlanta. "The encouraging news for Quebec is that Wang says he plans to honour the Islanders' lease at the Coliseum which runs through 2015 and the expiration should coincide with the opening of the new arena in Quebec City. The owner of the New York Islanders says he's "not giving up on Long Island" after voters rejected a plan to borrow US$400 million for a new hockey arena. Team owner Charles Wang says in a statement Wednesday that he has two goals for the Islanders: winning the Stanley Cup and staying on Long Island. The Islanders' lease at the Nassau Coliseum expires in 2015. In a referendum Monday, Nassau County voters rejected a plan to replace the 39-year-old coliseum. The plan also included development of a nearby minor-league ballpark and possibly an indoor track and field facility. Some have suggested that Wang could move his team to the new arena being built in Brooklyn for the NBA's Nets, or to eastern Long Island. HabsRuleForever
This organization is barely a shell of the powerhouse on & off the ice it used to be during it's consecutive championship seasons.
habs_93
I think it's a lot more likely that it ends up in Brooklyn than Quebec.

habs_93
Looks like Kansas will be getting a team sooner than later... What makes you say that? I think it looks less likely than ever. The group that owns the arena in KC, AEG, seems dead-set on building an NFL stadium and moving the Chargers to Los Angeles, and in doing that they've ignored Kansas City. This guy, a Kansas City blogger who really wants an NHL team in his town, seems to be throwing in the towel: http://puckchaser.com/

I don't think they'll bring another team to Canada so soon, not even if 2015 coincides with Quebec's arena finishing. Look at the MTS centre in Winnipeg. I just have a feeling that Kansas becomes the next city to get a team. Whether AEG is showing big interest right now or not. We'll start to hear rumblings of it again at some point. Lizardking89
I doubt very much that Bettman would let the Isles move anywhere. A new owner would do that team a world of good, Wang is the worst owner in sports. I just don't understand why Kansas city would be likely destination for an NHL team. KC had a team and it failed miserably. Didn't they learn anything from the Atlanta situation? Why go back to a city where hockey has failed before? Makes no sense to me. I agree, given the history the Isles have, I don't see him letting em go without a fight, but how many losing causes can he/NHL support? As for trying again in cities that didn't work the first time around... A lot has changed. When Atlanta(Flames), Seattle, KC had their respective teams, hockey USA wasn't what it is today. Team USA in international play was a joke until the 90's(except that one year in 1980-has grown since then). Hockey has gotten more and more popular in the states. With the salary cap, much like the NFL, blue collar cities can compete. I'd like to see if places like Hartford could make a go of it in the new NHL. The Gretzky trade and the rise in salaries (90's) made it impossible for small markets like Winnipeg, Hartford and even Pittsburgh to compete-Even after Mario got the team they had some shaky years. Since acquiring Sid the kid, winning the cup, they've built a new arena and attendance is good. Has hockey USA reached Kansas City? I believe there are more hockey fan in Hartford today, then there was when they played in the Adams division. Hartford had a pretty good attendance back in the day, I believe what killed them was trying to compete in a cap world with teams like the Rangers throwing money at players. Forever_Habs10
NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders may still get a new arena on Long Island, but in a different county. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says he welcomes the idea of the hockey team moving to the eastern end of the island that he represents, as long as it's good for the team and for the community. He said on Saturday he called team owner Charles Wang last week to talk about the idea. Messages to an Islanders spokesman were not immediately returned. Voters in neighbouring Nassau County rejected a plan Monday to borrow US$400 million for a new hockey arena. The Islanders' lease at Nassau Coliseum ends in 2015. Wong has said his goals for the team are to win the Stanley Cup and to stay on Long Island.

HabsRuleForever
The New York Islanders have agreed to a new six-year, $33 million contract extension with star forward John Tavares. The team has called a news conference for Thursday at which they are expected to officially announce the signing of the deal. Tavares still has one year left on his entry-level contract and will earn $3.75 million this season including bonuses. His extension begins in 2012-13 at $4 million, and will pay $5 million the next season. The contract will pay $6 million in each of the final four seasons of the contract. Tavares, who turns 21 next week, scored 29 goals and 38 assists last year in his second season with the Islanders. He was the first pick overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and produced 24 goals and 30 assists in his rookie season.

RSD
It's a strong statement from the organization putting money into its franchise player. It's even more that Tavares signed the deal. That's the kind of move that resonates with players around the league. While the team might not be bringing in the fans, the organization is clearly doing something right by being able to sign this kid long term. To add to that, the contract itself is incredibly reasonable. Tavares hasn't even hit his full potential yet and he's already potting 30 goals a year on a team that hasn't been all that great. $5.5 a year is almost what he's worth now as a 70 point player, if he continues to get better this contract will look spectacular in 3 years or so.
