Between the pipes 2011-12

Recommended Posts

Carey Price has cemented himself as the team's starter and a bonafide number one goaltender in the NHL. The "battle" may be done, but goaltending is always a hot-button topic in Montreal so please discuss here. Whether its praise for success, lament during a cold streak, discussion over the balance of games between starter and backup, this thread is your canvas for all things goaltending-related!

I'll start it off this year.

Obviously Price is #1 again, Auld and Sanford are gone, Budaj will be #2.

Is this a good signing?

Budaj comes at a decent price tag. I think it's a good upgrade compared to Auld, that's for sure.

Too bad we couldn't convince Vokoun to back up Price. He is only going to make 400,000$ more than Budaj next year. What a steal...

Will he be content to be a limited backup? - he played 45 games last year and is still relatively young for a goalie.

I would think he knows his role will be extremely limited. He can't seriously believe he's coming in here with a chance of stealing the number 1 spot. For all intents and purposes,,,he's the new cheerleader.

Well, I'll be paraphrasing, but he said something along the lines of he knew the situation in Montreal and that Carey is a great goalie, knows his roll is be a backup or something. I'm sure he still holds out hope he can eventually become a starter, but he seems to know it's not going to happen for him in MTL.

Well, if the unthinkable might happen and Price injures himself Budaj will have a chance to be a first stringer again...

I think right now, he does not want to be the man. He eagerly signed a contract with us. We have an excellent goalie coach that helped to improve Price and Halak. We have an excellent Goalie that's also young. He knows he isn't going to have the pressure that comes with being a starter but still some as he is playing in montreal. I really think he is hoping to improve his abilities by signing with us. He'll get some playing time, and a good goalie coach.

Well I have to say I am happier with this, as long as Budaj is content with a limited role - I always like to have a plan B - I hope the Dogs sign Mac now and then we even have a 'Plan C'!

Mac apparently has signed with Buffalo since he wants to compete foran NHL backup job to Miller.

Bulldogs have signed Nathan Lawson as #1 and Peter Delmas and Robert Mayer and still in the mix apparently.

Don't know much about Lawson. So our goaltending depth chart is pretty much complete.

There is no battle. But Budaj, unlike Auld or Sanford, has the ability to start 30-35 games if needed. That's a nice thing to have in case of injuries/cold streak etc. If he is able to do his job as a backup...he should get atleast 25 games to keep Price fresh for a long playoff run.

He knew where he was signing ( Montreal ) and who # 1 guy is so.....if he knows his role

Any second thoughts here gentleman???

Our depth was one of the best in he NHL/AHL a few years ago - now???

Still like Price but still not convinced he can live up to the hype - whether that is because he isn't mentally capable of it or because we ruined him by playing him too much too soon - who knows? I know it is not his fault - it is the team in front of him but he aint exactly stealing anything for us - and tonight was typical again - first goal caught wandering, second - lost and blaming everyone else.
