Hal Gill

hammer was our number two guy last year, granted hed never be a number two if we had a full healthy core but the point is hammer is probably one of the best "fill in" d in the game if theres such a thing, and hes just so consistent, hes older so of course hes slower but as long as hes with a faster guy hes good to go, i think markov will play maybe twenty games this season, i can understand taking a gamble on him but for three years? does pg like being stuck paying players who dont play or get paid a million+ per goal?

also washington should be improved because of the hammer we all know mike green is the most fragile player in the league if you brush by him his shoulder is dislocated, its really sad though was anyone else a big fan of green before the injuries hit?

Lame. You can tell by the lack of replies in this thread he's been pretty solid of late.

I haven't been terribly impressed with him recently, but it's beating a dead horse so I'm not going to keep ragging on Hal. We will miss his penalty-killing 5-on-3, for sure, though I actually think his 5-on-4 penalty-killing is massively overrated. He's so slow that he can't cut off pucks in the corner fast enough, and he clears the zone like a senior citizen. Sure, blocked shots are a great stat, but half those blocks aren't necessary if Gill just clears the puck the first time.

Sucks, but silver lining is Emelin gets another game under his belt.

Well. I can't say I missed him. Yeah, sure... We have a bunch of inexperienced defence out there, but they didn't seem to perform any worse without Gill and Spacek (after he left with injury in the second). I don't really see Gill as providing much more, if anything, than any of the other defencemen. But that's just me.

Dude is in the hospital because of his virus so he won't play Saturday either.

I hope he gets better :) , but I don't really miss him on the ice.

We're delusional if we think the return of Hal Gill is going to help this team play consistent, good hockey. The team lacks a competent number 1. No number of 5-6 defence is going to help us. Even if they are experienced veterans.

We'd also be delusional to think that not having Gill in the line up won't make a difference at all. He's still a good presence on the ice for us. We can't keep playing a blue line full of first year kids.

Hal Gill's presence on the blueline is what it is the defence is missing the big body, blocking machine that eats up minutes and clearly is missed on the PK,his veteran leadership and calming effect is a tangible that can't be measured by stats.Let's all hope he has a speedy recovery. All the best to you Hal we miss you as your teammates do.

Just in case this wasn't mentioned, he apparently had an infected cut/wound and not a virus. I'm not sure what this means in terms of timing for a return or where this injury is. RDS seems to be saying he may be back next week sometime, but there's a big difference between Monday and Saturday, as we have a lot of key games next week.

Just a small sample, but our PK didn't miss a beat with Gill out of the lineup.

Nope, it didn't but at the very least it will/should allow us to lessen the PK load off at least one of Subban or Gorges, which helps.

Absolutely, but that's a workload issue. All I'm saying is that our PK didn't fall apart with Hal out of the lineup. In fact, it was topnotch.

I think that happened for a couple of reasons:

1. We played, for the most part, teams with awful PP's. The NYR are 2nd-last in the league. The Hurricanes are 4th last. The NYI are 11th last, and the Bruins have had a pretty mediocre PP this year and last, and really only had 1 PP anyways (if you count the delayed penalty, well then they scored on that 6-on-5). The Sabres have a good PP this year, but still had only 4 chances (lower than what we usually give up).

2. Carey. Be it Gill or Subban or someone else, the factor that most influences how well a PK does is the goalie. Carey's been clearing the dump-ins like a monster. And yes, that's partly your point that the PK can be alright without Gill in there, but in the long run, we're better off with him on the PK than without him. I think having so many rookies would catch up to us eventually.

3. St-Denis... he held his own, even with some PK time. Nothing fancy, but we didn't end up with a young D man making mistakes that cost us goals. Again, that might not hold true if you let him play the minutes Gill did though, and as was pointed out, workload would have caught up to Subban and Gorges, quite possibly with the double-header against two very good teams this weekend.

In the long run, for this season anyway, using rookies on the PK would definitely catch up with us, agreed. I'm not saying Gill has no value on the PK. I was just interested to see that our PK did very well without Gill.
