#53 Ryan White 2011-2012

Moen's positioning is not bad, I'll give you both that. But it's pretty useless to us if he can't finish more than he has. And at his age, he's not likely to learn new skills. Moen's best goal output was 11 with Anaheim a number of yeas ago and he needed a full 82 games to achieve that. Even in junior, he never scored more than 10 goals in a season. White, on the other hand, did score 20-35 goals a year fairly consistently as a junior, so he has some scoring touch and he potted a couple of decent goals in last year's pre-season. As I've said, he's proven nothing at the NHL level yet but I personally believe he has the ability to surprise people offensively if he finally gets the chance. I used the comparisons of Metropolit and Darche because you have two guys there who managed to come up with offensive production well above their career averages when they were over the age of 30 because they were given a chance to play the PP and get some ice time with decent linemates (as opposed to Moen, whose had the same chances and done nothing with them offensively). I too really like Darche as a player, but what I'm saying is that I believe Ryan White can put up 12-15 goals if he gets to play bigger minutes, gets some stretches on the top 2 lines, and is used as the man in front of the net on the PP. This season, we actually have a lot of players with offensive talent sitting ahead of him in the pecking order, but regardless, I feel like White is a capable player who could very easily show the kind of offensive output a guy like Chris Neil or Sean Avery puts up in the role of an agitator.

Only time will tell. Tom Pyatt threw up some nice offensive numbers in junior and even in the AHL. Then again, as you say, look at what a journeyman like Metro or a guy like Darche did when given the opportunity.

Precisely. I'm not saying White will be a star, but my hunch is that he could could do as well as some of those other guys if given a proper chance. The difference between White and Pyatt is that White takes the puck and his body hard to the net. He doesn't rely on puck control skill or his shot to score and there is a much better chance of his being able to score tip-ins and goal-mouth scramble type goals at the NHL level than a player who benefited from weaker goaltending/defence at lower levels does of continuing that type of scoring in the NHL.

When White was in Hamilton he had a regular shift on the powerplay.

But he's not in Hamilton anymore, and we have a plethora of forwards who are more effective on the PP than he would be. Cammalleri, Gomez, Plekanec, and Gionta are basically guaranteed a spot. That leaves 2 spots for Eller, Desharnais, Pacioretty, Cole, Kostitsyn, Darche, Moen, and White. I can't see White slotting ahead of all of those players on the PP depth chart.

Look, I like White, but at this point, all he's proven is that he's a good 4th line energy guy. As Carey put it, he has balls of steel. He hits, he skates, and he fights, but IMO he's become overrated very quickly here. I think he certainly has a place on this team, and should probably start the year with the Canadiens, but not in the top 9, and not on the PP.

As I said, no one's penciling in White to start the year on the first PP unit, but if things aren't working using perimeter players or the bigger skilled players don't go to the net enough, I believe White is a viable alternative to try. He is a nice complement to having Markov-Subban-Weber on the point.

He's already on the ice at Brossard, that says a lot for the kid,he's here early to work, now that is the team mate I like on my team, hope he gets to prove that hard work will get you nearly anything.that's a lot of kudos for me,love him even more now.

GO RYAN GO

obviously mixed opinions here on White here. As Maddie says he's already putting in the hard yards.

'White, along with a few other teammates, continued to make the most of the offseason, taking to the Brossard ice to run a few drills.'

I like the attitude and the determination to learn and improve of this young man, I hope he does well this coming season.

I know he's not in Hamilton anymore but I'm just saying that if he's needed on the powerplay for whatever reason that he wouldn't be completely lost out there.

Doesn't matter what is asked of him he will give it everything he's got,as will most of our players overall we haven't got a lazy team.

GO WHITE GO

Agreed any player that thinks he can play in Montreal without bringing his best game every night is in for a real wake up call.Team is another word for Montreal Canadiens,Go Habs Go!

Yes I know that,a lot skate all summer and work out all summer, but that does not take anything away from White, that he is back so early.

I could see him possibly centering the 4th line. I'm assuming Eller won't be ready to start the year, so our third line will likely be Kostitsyn-Desharnais-Darche/Moen, leaving the 4th line for either Moen-White-Darche, Moen-Engvist-White, or something along those lines.

he tried to skate last sunday and it didn"t go well. he was told by the medical team to stay completely off the ice for a full week

ya like i said, most likely tore it really hard.. its a shame not to have him ready to go for Thursday

He's definitely the type of player you want in against Toronto. I'm hoping the Habs select Yemelin over Diaz for the opener, cause we'll need a guy with some attitude in our line-up with White out.

oh my god yes, Yemelin is a must in the lineup for Thursday and the rest of the season.. he is a physical player gets in guys faces and we need that terribly bad especially with Ryan out.

Does anybody else think Ryan might have a hard time cracking the lineup by the time he gets back? He has not even been skating.

Weber's value keeps rising and Emelin/Diaz will lockdown one spot maybe 2 between them on defence within the next month. I have an inkling that JM is going to be forced to keep Weber in the lineup at either forward or defense most of the season. This is not a slight to Ryan, in fact, I really like him but getting into JM's mind, he seems like the kinda coach that would value a PP specialist/7th d-man instead of a rugged 4th liner. Assuming Cammy and Spacek are both ready prior to White, I'm not sure where he'd fit in.
