Canadiens' Darche makes retirement official

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Mathieu Darche has decided to hang up the skates. Literally.

Darche, 36, a free agent who has yet to play an NHL game this season, released a brief message on his Twitter account on Tuesday in both French and English, stating, "Time to make it official! Moving on to second career," along with a picture of his skates hanging on hooks.

A native of Quebec, Darche totaled five goals and 12 points in 61 games for the Habs last season.

Over an 11-year pro career with the Blue Jackets, Predators, Sharks, Lightning and Canadiens, he totaled 30 goals and 72 points in 250 contests.

We joked around quite a bit during Tank Watch with the way Cunneyworth liked to use him, but overall he was a great/likeable guy and provided some sneaky good value at times.

I wish him the best and think we should start a poll about how long before we see him on Anti-Chambre.

I think you'll see him with the NHLPA.

I did enjoy having him on the team even if he was over used. I felt kinda frustrated that he seemed to become some kind of symbol for the French Media. Heck, one reporter asked Marc Bergevin how he was going to go about replacing the losses of key players such as Mathieu Darche.

He was never a key player for us. He provided great value at times and it showed when he earned his PP time in the 10/11 season. He worked hard to get to where he got and it showed, he played for the CH not the name on his back. I loved having him on the team and wish him the best :)
