FirstStar
I wouldn't mind him on a two-year deal, but nothing beyond that and certainly nothing at or above $2 million. He is not a top-line center or winger. He is not a top-four defenseman. He generates no offense, but isn't a shutdown man. He's not the goalie. Josh Gorges is not a critical component of this team. I would go as high as 2.5 mil, but that's the highest I'd go. He's a good PK guy, does trail the rush and bangs in the odd goal. He isn't fast, he can fit into a top line role in a crunch, but that's it. The one thing that we have with gorges, is durability, something we've had a problem with in the past (all positions). He's been here about 5 years and this is his first real injury, he gives us a reliable body with experience on our blueline. Apart from this past season, he hasn't really missed any significant time. But is that worth an extra mil? Given his experience-he's still only 26 yrs old, can grow with our youngins-the fact he's been our healthiest dman over the past 5 yrs, does a good job on our PK, gives us size and doesn't shy away from physical play and a good locker room/team player, I say that's worth 2.5 mil. Even if arbitration goes as high as 3 mil, we'd be dumb not to sign him to at least one season. We know what we get from him and I'd rather have him fo one season, then gamble on another player. We don't really have many options.

jedimaas
Just a question, if we DO let gorges walk like some people are suggesting, who would replace him? I would almost bet my house that we do not let Gorges walk. Any team that asks a player "what is our priority" has no intentions of letting him walk. Although I don't think so. But if he does....do I get your house?
BeanCountingHab
There's really no scenario IMO where it makes sense to let him walk this year. If they really can't agree on a deal, he will go to arbitration and we'll bring him in for a year at that price, even it ends up being a slight over-payment. Wether it's a 1 year deal, a 5 year deal, or anything in between, I absolutely believe Josh Gorges starts the season wearing the CH.
fansince1975
I think that Gorges is worth far more then most fans are suggesting. I hope that Gorges signs before the hearing to a four or five year deal. Somewhere around $3 million cap hit. Hopefully closer to $2.5 million but I strongly believe that Gorges is one of our top 4 D so $3 million cap hit is not a bad contract for both sides. IMHO. I think that Gorges will be better after the surgery. His knee was bad since his days in junior hockey. It is now repaired.

I think that Gorges will be better after the surgery. His knee was bad since his days in junior hockey. It is now repaired. I basically agree. I know his offensive contribution is minimal but how is his +/-. Apart from when his longstanding injury finally caught up with him, I found him to be our defenseman who made the fewest gaffes. If his +/- has been up there, then doesn't that offset his lack of production on the scoresheet?
maddienmike
We don't really know what Gorges is capable of,now that he is healthy,I am sure we will see an improvement,am the only one that remembers how much more he was doing before he was injured,he was beginning to shoot and even move around more that was probably what set his knee off,but I remember him being asked about it during an interview,he replied that the rest of the team had been encouraging him and he said that he wanted to do those things.Whatever happens he will come back and play his heart out as always.I know one thing for sure there are 29 other GM's who would like to sign him.He is one of the popular players among the pundits and analyst's even Grapes likes him and he is a HAB,I think we should be thankful that he plays for us,I have always really like him and I for one want him to sign with us. GO GORGES GO

Forever_Habs10
Josh Gorges’ arbitration hearing is set for July 28. He and the Canadiens have a week to negotiate a deal and avoid what is often a corrosive process. In a piece announcing he will succeed Réjean Tremblay as La Presse’s sports columnist, François Gagnon wrote that arbitration should be avoided in Gorges’ case. While he is not a Markov or Subban, Gagnon wrote, Gorges is a solid defenceman who is a respected leader in the Canadiens’ room. Gorges could be captain of the club some day. But this is not likely to happen if he has been through arbitration where, as is customary in the process, the team argues against Gorges’ value. Get it done, Pierre. Hockey I/O

maddienmike
Six days until arbitration I hope they get it done before then, apart from maybe a couple of cheap pick ups everything is set for next season when this is done,I will be happier then,I can't see what the delay is,Josh doesn't want to go elsewhere and can't expect too much after being out most of the season,I think the problem maybe the term by a year or two.Come on PG most of us love Josh ans we don't want to see him elsewhere. boxman
Boomer on ESPN radio said it's a travesty that Gorges hasn't been signed yet. Pointed out our long playoff run in '10, where he blocked tons of shots, said he's a warrior, and the possible next captain of the Canadiens. People said Komisarek would be the next captain, but at 5 mil, no thanks. Hopefully it is just about term, and a deal gets done soon. As for shot blocking, the top 10 teams last year were: FLA, NYI, MTL, EDM, PHI, COL, TOR, OTT, PIT, CAR. Sure, it shows a dedication to the team, but doesn't translate into success. weepingminotaur
Want more money, show the league you're worth it...I like how PG handles these Agreed, and in the case of Gorges, I'm happy with the one-year deal. We need flex on our backend next summer, when PK and Carey hit RFA status. At that time, Spacek and Gill will be UFA, and we'll have had a year to see where Yemelin and Weber are in their development.

ColRouleBleu
Want more money, show the league you're worth it...I like how PG handles these In the end, I think it would be interesting if all contracts were for one year, or at least the money part negotiated every year based on performance. I too like how PG handles things and I like that the agreement with Gorges came before arbitration. I think the arbitrator may have come up with something similar but it's better not to have a third party having a say so in this type of relationship.
