OVECHKIN DENIES BEING OUT OF SHAPE IN INTERVIEW VIDEO

Is Alex Ovechkin fit and ready for the beginning of training camp in a couple of weeks?

Well, observers around the internet aren't so sure after seeing an off-season video from Caps365 in July of Ovechkin where the star forward appears to have a bit of a gut sticking out.

At the time, Ovechkin told the Capitals website, "Don't worry, I'm going to be in good shape and I'll be ready for the year because this is a very important year for the Caps and for me, too."

But speaking this week with Sovetsky Sport, which was translated by Yahoo! Sports, the Russian forward explained that the video had a distorted picture.

"I don't have a gut, do I?" Ovechkin said, according to Yahoo!. "Everyone started calling me yelling on the phone. 'What did you do to yourself? Watch the video!' I went online and gasped. 'I am in trouble!'"

"When you're sitting, slouching, your gut would still stick out," he continued. "I don't even understand myself how this was filmed this way. My hands were swollen as if I was after a weeklong hangover. My gut, my face..."

Ovechkin, who turns 26 on Sept. 17, is listed at 6'2" and 223 lb. He scored 32 goals and 53 assists in 79 games last season, and added five goals and five assists in nine playoff appearances.

From NHL.com. Ovechkin benched for the final 3:11 of regulation against Anaheim while Backstrom scores the tying goal with 42 seconds left. There was a verbal exchange between Boudreau and Ovechkin with 1:27 left after Boudreau had called a timeout and sent Backstrom out as the extra attacker and left Ovechkin on the bench. He was back on the ice when the Capitals scored the game winner, so apparently Boudreau game him a chance to redeem himself.

Alexander Ovechkin is taking a pass on this year's All-Star Game in Ottawa. Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee told reporters on Tuesday that Ovechkin will not be participating in this year's event. ''He really doesn't feel like he deserves to be there and doesn't want to be a distraction,

I feel like this is something of a display of immaturity on Ovechkin's part. He gets suspended so he decides fine, well then I'm not going to do any favors for the league either. Ultimately the NHL ASG is a joke anyways, but this seems like a bit of a selfish decision on Ovechkin's part.

He won't get an argument from this forum.

HODGEMAIL: OVI STILL A SUPERSTAR? WILL HE EVER BE AGAIN?

*TSN's Dave Hodge sounds off on all the hockey issues of the day in Hodgemail.

Have you seen Alexander Ovechkin? The young up-and-comer who scored 52 goals and 106 points in his rookie season and took home the Calder Trophy as Rookie Of The Year?

The one who scored 121 goals and 222 points over his next two seasons and won back-to-back Hart Trophies? The player who at one point, was considered a good bet to push Brett Hull and Wayne Gretzky's single-season goal-scoring marks?

This season, we haven't - as Ovechkin is 52nd in the NHL in points with 45 and and 22nd in goals with 24. It's safe to say that the Art Ross Trophy and two Rocket Richard trophies won't have much company on his display case this summer.

Still, there's still that excitement factor that comes when he steps out on the ice. Struggling or not, the can't miss first-overall pick from 2004 still has drawing power.

At least we think so.

I wonder how Ovi will be if Sasha winds up not signing in Washington (as reports would indicate despite GMGM not ruling out signing Sasha).

I hope with Oates as head coach, we will see the Ovechkin pre 2010.
