Jeff Woywitka

Recommended Posts

Thanks for creating the thread. I think Woywitka is better than Alexandre Picard and has a chance at stealing a roster spot in camp. He's likely number 8 on the depth chart right now or battling Diaz to be number 8 behind: Markov, Subban, Gorges, Gill, Spacek, Emelin, Weber. If all goes well this season Woywitka might replace Spacek and slide into the 7 spot on the depth chart. He could also conceivably be the 7th d-man out of camp if Weber is considered our 13th forward. Either way, this was another sneaky pickup by PG because he agreed to a 2-way contract which I suspect Stalman would not have.

Here's what I/O, had to say:

Welcome to the Habs organization.

Maybe he'll surprise us.

He filled in admirably when called upon in Dallas, so hopefully he'll do the same in Montreal if need be.

Can Jeff Woywitka get a little love?

Am I the only one with a sneaking suspicion that he will end up playing >20 games for the Habs this season?

The reaction to Woywitka was quite bipolar yesterday. Some liked him, some thought he was awful. I like his size and the mix of skill he brings and I think he will definitely be in the mix at some point this year if he's not claimed off waivers. He showed some rust at certain points yesterday, but so did a lot of guys, so I certainly believe he's capable of being a third-pairing guy for us. The question is whether there's any room for him with the number of guys ahead on the depth chart. If everyone else performs up to their abilities, there just won't be room to keep Woywitka around no matter how well he does.

Bingo. He can only do so much in regards to his destiny with this team - his playing time will also be based on how others in front of him fare.

TBH I was not very impressed, was poor defensively and let alot of good shots go through.

In the first period he didn't impress me at all, but I could say the same for most of the team. After the 2 goals in the 2nd the team seemed to settle down and played much better.

He has moved around between a few teams, so we shouldn't expect too much from him. I think it's a good depth move and he does add size.

Not a guy you would cling to long term as a general manager to fill out your top 6, but a defenseman you'd be happy to invite to your roster in the short term in case of injury troubles or to compete with players fighting for the final spot on the roster. Which is exactly the habs scenario right now having lost an abundance of valuable D men to free agency and having some kids like Weber and declining veterans like Spacek competing for a spot.

Well if he makes the team, he's at least a cut above using a guy like Alex Picard.

I think this guy has the inside line to start as the 7th D-man. It's between him and Diaz in my opinion. With Diaz being new to NA, I'd give the edge to Woywitka. He never looked nervous or made a stupid play out there as far as I could tell. He also looked very happy to score and seemed to love the atmosphere at the Bell Centre. Probably grateful to be a Hab, and rightfully so.

Well, we have...

  • Andrei Markov (possibly not starting the season).
  • Jaroslav Spacek.
  • Josh Gorges.
  • Hal Gill.
  • Alexei Yemelin.
  • P.K. Subban.
  • Yannick Weber.
  • Jeff Woywitka.
  • Raphael Diaz.

If Markov is healthy and Yannick Weber actually play defence I don't really see Woywitka breaking the lineup. Spacek, Gorges, Subban, and Gill are definitely ahead of him. IMO, Yemelin and Weber should be given ice-time before him, as well.

I never understood why we got him though.

The D depth is looking great with lots of promising prospects. Some prospects are ready; they just need an opportunity and Woywitka is taking that opportunity away IMO.

I'm talking about guys like Weber, Diaz and Yemelin.

Was explained nicely a few posts back. Borderline NHL defenceman with experience brought in as a barometer for prospects and saftey net for injured veterans on a 2 way deal. I think it was a sneaky good signing.

Or, in short, a slight upgrade from Alexandre Picard in the toughness and skill department.

The depth the Habs have on defence is really quite something, looking back early this summer I wondered how good the defence would be.Now with Campoli added there seems to be choices of the type of defenceman the Habs want to play.Woywitka was one of those players I hoped Montreal would have drafted and I'm glad PG signed him.
