Chris Campoli

Question: Does the acquisition of Campoli make a player like Josh Gorges expendable? Arguably perhaps, a conparison can be made of the two... what say you?

No. Campoli is another lefty. He is another guy who bings an offensive upside with weaknesses in his own zone. Gorges, on the other hand, is one of the few guys we have who can play the right effectively and who is strong defensively. Campoli is not as good a player as Gorges in my opinion but more importantly, he brings a completely different skillset, so the two are not interchangable.

Wow... that didn't take long ;)

Personally. I'd rather Spacek and/or Gill (in that order) because of the cap hit for starters. But the cap hit is why I'm bringing it up. And though it may be premature on my part... with the current state of the Habs defense I could see PG trying to make a few changes to that via a trade perhaps... and because of that I see Gorges as a fairly valuable commodity if combined with someone else. And the contract negotiations with Gorges this summer may have cooled the Habs view of him.

I think we could argue that Campoli has more to offer on the offensive side as you say. Yet, maybe he is not really that far off what Gorges brings on the defensive side of the equation playing as a 5th d-man.

Campoli is a one and done. He's a poor man's Wisniewski as a replacement/band-aid/panic move to temporarily replace Markov and give time for the young guys to be eased into action. Weber isn't quite ready, Yemelin hasn't quite adjusted yet and somebody needs to eat 20-22 minutes a night while playing on the PP.

Ask yourself this question: Who out of Campoli, Spacek, Weber, Yemelin, Woywitka and Diaz would I prefer playing 20+ minutes a night and on the powerplay with Subban TO START THE SEASON?

Now, the move makes some sense. 27, NHL experienced and a known 2nd wave PP guy.

Gorges is a rock and core player on the team, he'll be signed long-term this summer after Spacek retires and frees up money.

I would agree with this. The jury is still out on whether Campoli can be as good as Gorges, but even if he was to be, he'd be a different type of "good." He's a completely different type of player as you've pointed out very clearly.

Time will tell. I have no doubt that this is exactly the "worst case scenario" that Pierre Gauthier considered when signing Campoli - however - it is still very much within the realm of possibility that he becomes a valuable member of this team. He's still young enough and has shown flashes of being a better player than he is often given credit for. I dont for one minute think he'll ever be a top pairing defensman, but I think there's still an outside chance he becomes a solid #4. Tough to say if it will be with this team (if it does indeed happen) but I do think there's still some potential upside to be had with Chris.

Why is Mr. Campoli missing the 2011-2012 tag next to his name? :(

I have no idea what you're talking about! :P :P

I would agree he's a poor man's Wisniewski, but then again so was Wisniewski until his breakout season last year. :P

Will this guy walk in and be a stud and solve all our problems? Doubtful. But this also isn't your typical 'sign a guy at the bottom of the barrel nobody wanted'. If it was, he'd be here for $700K. Spector (not Eklund!) had reported following arbitration Campoli was confident about getting a contract and was already talking to teams and taking his time. Obviously to get the most money possible (which you can't really blame him for).

Let's face it; if Markov can't start the season he's our next best puck mover after Subban. (Spacek can be, but he's pretty much a wild card). He's also in his physical prime and used to playing 19-20 minutes a night.

Is it desperate? Maybe, but I still think it's a good move given our cap space and the state of our defense.

My guess is that Campoli can see the direction the Habs team is going and filling in for injured players on a playoff bound Habs is a better choice than the Rangers,Oilers or the Lightning.I'm wondering if there is bonus money involved that might bring his contract to $2.5 mil.,which is what he was awarded in arbitration with Chicago. At $1.75 the Habs have themselves an insurance player in case of injuries.Getting players during the season has been costly the last couple of years (a 2nd & 5th round draft pick for Wisniewski)Maybe this year things will change and the Habs will be healthy and the dearth of defencemen PG has brought to town will bring back some of the picks we traded,to stay competitive. With the addition of Campoli the Habs have 16 defencemen under contract between Montreal and Hamilton.Out of those dmen only Nash is expected to be out for 4-6 months with a shoulder injury. It appears PG isn't taking any chances of losing draft picks again this season.(once bitten twice shy)Good signing Pierre Gauthier.

I don't believe Campoli is eligible for bonuses except if he wins an award at the end of the year which is highly doubtful. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think only players signing entry level contracts are eligible for performance bonuses.

Players can have performance bonuses included if they are

1. On an entry level contract

2. 35 or older on a one-year deal

3. Veterans who have played more than 400 games, have spent 100 days or more on IR the year before and are on a 1-year contract

Campoli does not meet any of these criteria and so is not eligible.

He probably also sees it as a legitimate shot to be on the powerplay and earn top 4 minutes.

They really aren't great, they're on the same fringe as us, they need things to continue to go right or they could slide out. Their easy divisional schedule helps.

Much better goaltending for a full season, this year. Resurgent Lecavalier, retained some good defensemen Ohlund, Brewer, Hedman, Kubina make a solid top 4.

Healthy top 6 (awkward season for malone and downie) will boost their team as well.

But this is Campoli, and I'm glad we got him. Could go either way.

Their starting goalie is 41, I'm not sure why Lecavalier is guaranteed to be resurgent, Ohulund is 35, Kubina 34, Brewer is OK, Hedman will be a stud, who knows when he goes from very good to elite. Their best player is 36.

Health is never a guarantee, so I'm not sure why you're stating they'll have a healthy top 6. They had the exact same goal differential as the Habs last year. That's the thing though, they're a likely bottom half playoff team who, if things go wrong, will miss, just like IMO the Habs.

In fact, everything you're saying about them is what people here are saying about the Habs. The line is thin. The bottom half playoff teams aren't guaranteed much and both Montreal and Tampa look like bottom half playoff teams.

This will be his third "resurgent" year in a row if I'm no mistaken. ;)
