Kaberle for Spacek. Done deal.

Do not like this one bit. Took on another terrible contract. 2 years left on the contract after this year at 4.25 million. Kaberle has only 9 assists 0 goals and is a minus 12. ugh not happy one bit why do we always aquire guys that glide and float around all game

Of course that's sooking at it selectively but I think that Kaberle is still a serviceable Dman. So was Spacek and we were al waiting for him to get back but I think Kaberle will fit.

I just thought of this. Isn't Spacek still "injured" though? Does that not play into it (Thinking Betts here)?

This is absolutely terrible.

Has no one watched Kaberle since ... '09? He's been absolutely atrocious.

He's a liability in his own end, and somehow managed to do absolutely nothing on a stacked bruin's line-up.

Now he's making 4.25 million, and we trade for him? What does this management have a 'seek-and-acquire' mandate for every horrendous contract available? I guess we should be thankfull that we didn't have to throw in Beulieu or Tinordi, similar to the Gomez trade.

I really don't know what to think about this trade, but I've always had a lot of respect for Kaberle. When he was with the Leafs, as much as I did not like their team, I considered him one of the elite offensive D-men in the league, and if he can regain some of that I can see this trade working out well. Hopefully he will be the 2nd ex-Cane to have a resurgence in Montreal after Cole.

Some very quick numbers...

Spacek is 37 years old (born Feb 1974), is UFA after this year, and his cap hit for 2011 is 3.8 million.

Kaberle is 33 years old (born Mar 1978), is signed through 2013-14, and his cap hit for the next 3 years is 4.25 million.

Terrible move. If you think this is good look again he is not half the player he was and just took anohter bad contract. Desperate move

Honestly, at this poiint, I see it as a good thing. We are terrible on D and I think that regardless of how bad people may think Kaberle has been since the Leafs, for the team, I think it is good. It's not like we gave up anything crazy for him.

Kaberle with a canadiens jersey playing on the PP with Markov would have been a dream come true 3-4 years ago. Now, i don't know what to make of it.

The man has been doing terrible only since he got traded to the Bruins not even a year ago. Before that, he had been the best leafs player before Sundin went to Vancouver. The leafs wanted no less than a first round pick, an impact player and a promising rookie in return for him.

This guy has such a good vision in the offensive end; hopefully he hasn't lost his magic and simply needs to adapt to a new team.

If Kaberle were to be a free agent at the end of this year, I could care less. But - we were truly counting on the Spaco cap dollars to be able to re-up Subban/Price + have any hope of keeping AK46/Gorges.

His 4.25M next year is a deal breaker alone. Nevermind the fact that he is a -9 this year. Weber has been perma-benched for less than that. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the idea of having someone vaguley successfull on the PP, but he's always been completely useless otherwise. To boot, we have to put up with him for the next 2 years, at which point he'll be 34 and 35.

29 GP , 0g 9a , -12 ---- 4.25 million year 3 years

12 GP , 0g 3a, +2 ---- UFA

So I guess tanking this season isn't on PG's radar... Nor is getting rid of bad contracts.

Reminds me of the desperation move that Gainey made. Cammalleri Gomez Gionta, that leaked desperation since Gainey knew this is his last year.

All in all, we need a new philosophy and firing the GM/Coach might be the best way.

I really think we should give this trade a chance before we crap all over it. Our D corps is horrible right now, point blank, and is in dire need of a power play quarterback. Kaberle can still distribute the puck on the backend. No, he's not the player he once was, but we're getting a top-four d-man for just about $500k more in cap than Spacek. The stability he provides beyond this season is also key, since a number of our d-men are hitting some form of free agency this offseason (Gorges, Subban, Gill, Campoli).

Consider that we got a top-four d-man in exchange for a player who was everyone's favorite punching-bag last season, and who has spent most of this season on the IR. Straight up, one for one.

i hope he gets some pride by being a hab and step his game up. that being said, i liked the person that spack was as a hab and to the people and kids around him.

Really? Just like the pride Gomez and cam and so many hab players feel right?..just another player to collect a paycheck. Someone mentioned who actually has paid attention to Kaberle after leaving Toronto is dead on. He has just been brutal and is a major liability on D. We continue to do this over and over and never learn. Trust me do not get excited about this move just because we finnaly make a move. This is not a good deal.

Yes but you tie yourself into a bunch of money again. Spacek contract was do up end of year. Now this hinders us from signing much better players in the off season. Also he is not a top 4 D in this league anymore. I dont think he is a top 4 on Hamilton to be honest.

Well. We didn't give up a pick or prospect, so it's not that desperate. Anyone who doesn't believe Kaberle isn't an upgrade on Spacek is out of their mind. Everyone is drawing their opinion from one bad play-off run (9 points in 24 games with Boston ain't that bad), and a bad 29 games on a garbage team. He had 38 points in 58 games with Toronto in 2010-2011. That is excellent production.

Good solid trade. We get a legit top-four defenseman, younger than Spacek at 33 years of age, who can help the atrocious power play, and who's signed beyond the current year, adding some quality depth to our D corps.

Powerplay specialist is all he really amounts to in my opinion. He played well with the Maple Leafs in his day but has looked horrid everywhere else.

Spacek's contract was going to be off the books at the end of the year. Instead, we're now stuck with a contract larger than $4-million a season for two more years after this one.

And we wonder why we're so hard-pressed with cap-space and contracts sometimes...

He can provide us a little offense, but I wonder if the defensive downside is really worth it. He's looked atrocious in the last few years, even at the end of his tenure with Toronto. We'll see if he pans out to be worth the contract, but I'm not holding my breath.

*gulp*

I think it's unfair to even say he isn't the player he once was. As I just pointed out. 38 points in 58 games with the Leafs in 2010-2011. So what? He's had a bad 50-some-odd games with the Bruins and Hurricanes. It's hardly fair to assume he's lost a step. I will gladly welcome Kaberle here! I'm excited to see what he can do.
