weepingminotaur
"And we found him. Down the hall! BOB GAINEY!!!11" God, I hope not. I want everyone from that era gone: Gainey, RC, and the assistant coaches except for Groulx.
jennifer_rocket
God, I hope not. I want everyone from that era gone: Gainey, RC, and the assistant coaches except for Groulx. Me too. I'm also glad they're doing this now instead of waiting. There's nothing to gain by waiting for the end of the season. I'm glad it's done. Even an extra two weeks to find a replacement could be very valuable when other teams start looking at the end of the regular season.
weepingminotaur
If possible, can a mod give this topic a better title than the one I hastily gave it? Me too. Yep, this firing is making me feel positive about Molson's assessment of the situation. No time for us to be dilly-dallying with a GM who's on borrowed time. If you don't want him back, turf him now, and let the rebuilding begin. Even a few weeks can make a difference for the replacement, who'll have a stiff job ahead of him. Kindred
Kind of surprised they did it now. But we all saw the writing on the wall. Now lets set back and watch Molson screw this up and hire someone who speaks french. with no experience just to appease the french media. or wait, no we do that for the coaches right, it doesn't matter for the gm though

weepingminotaur
Interestingly, Gainey isn't on either of the Habs personnel pages (hockey ops or administration): http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=52766 http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=52816 Has this always been the case? Was Gainey ever there, or is this a new absence indicating that he too has been fired?
Kindred
Bring on Saint-Patrick!!11 i like st patrick. One of the happiest moments watching the habs these past few years was seeing his number retired and seeing him come back to the habs family. Making him a gm or a coach would ruin that as there would probably be another falling out.

Yes this makes me feel hopeful too. Now they need to get Gainey out as well. weepingminotaur
I could live with Roy as coach, but I think hiring him as GM would be a disaster. He has zero knowledge of how to run a cap team in the NHL. I want a guy who's been in the league for a few years, whether as assistant GM or GM proper. BeanCountingHab
Interestingly, Gainey isn't on either of the Habs personnel pages (hockey ops or administration): http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=52766 http://canadiens.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=52816 Has this always been the case? He doesn't officially exist.

I could be wrong, I suppose.

He has zero knowledge of how to run a cap team in the NHL. I want a guy who's been in the league for a few years, whether as assistant GM or GM proper. This is where I fall too. He has had legitimate success and experience as a head coach and would be well equiped to handle the Montreal media pressure in that position. If the new GM feels he's the best candidate based on ability, I have no problem accepting him. GM in the new NHL is a whole different animal though. I don't necessarily need a guy who has been GM before, but I want someone with good management experience and a solid track record in the salary cap world. WIN-WIN ,,,,,,WOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :D And with all 3 of those things the habs will screw it up somehow. We will probably hire someone with no experience as gm, re hire another coach with no experience and we will probably play our way out of the top 5 draft pick. I never understood those Roy as GM rumors. It wouldn't make sense to take a junior coach and put him as a GM when he has zero experience in pro management. Roy is a legend,a living legend at that. The french media has stirred up the masses and are demanding someone who speaks french and has passion. At this point if Roy came back and was the ticket guy at the door or worked one of the canteens the french media would be happy.
