Give the Dogs a Bone!

Wondering if the Hamilton Bulldogs will be getting any of their eligible players back from the Habs, especially the healthy scratches and those logging little ice time.

The Dogs are in the midst of their longest road trip ever and are doing well, They've won 4 of their last 6 games (and in the losses the Dogs pretty much dominated the games and lost by only one!). Their playoff hopes are still a bit dicey, but considering the teams play and current attitude, a playoff spot is still a possibility.

Surely sending some players would not only help the Dogs but help the Habs to allow players like Leblanc to play high intensity games and MORE games in playoffs.

The players that are eligible to come back are:

Blake Geoffrion

Louis Leblanc

Aaron Palushaj

Frederic St-Denis

Even one or two would certainly help, especially considering Geoffrion hasn't played at all lately and Palushaj is often scratched and generally gets well short of 10 minutes in ice time!

I don't think it is a coincidence that former Dogs with AHL playoff experience like Plekanec, Desharnais, Price and Pacioretty are among the few bright spots in a pretty dismal year.

I think there's a rule that you can't send those players back. But yea adding those 4 players would help the dogs out.

Those four players are indeed eligible to go back and forth (and most have a number of times this season!).

They are on the BUlldogs "Clear Day Roster" which specifies who is eligible - as for the NHL all of them are in a position to leave and come back.

Funnily enough, all played last night and all but Palushaj got decent ice time.

Still - the Habs aren't going anywhere and don't really want to go anywhere (draft pick!) so it might be nice to try to assure some extra ice time

for the prospects by helping the Dogs make the playoffs!

Dogs play tonight in Houston!!! BIg game - listen to it on 820 CHAM (online) or 990 in Montreal (I believe).

After the deadline there's a maximum number of call ups (4), I think the Habs are at that number although I'm not 100% sure. Either way, anyone they send down can't be recalled unless it's on an emergency basis. They probably don't want to risk sending a guy down and then wishing they had kept him to give Markov a day off or something of the sort.

I thought so, not sure how many we have used since the trade deadline - would have been better if they had it planned out but the Habs come first.

Found more on this from Darren Dreger (re Leafs/Marlies) still applies to us!

Hey Dregs,

Brian Burke was pretty peeved last week mentioning the post-trade deadline four call-up rule and he's gotta be fuming after all four were burned off this week! Why was the rule put in place and are other GMs just as weary of this rule?

Troy

A: Troy, this question comes up every year at this time. The rule was collectively bargained and it's believed the NHLPA pushed for the rule in support of veteran players who may lose ice-time to call ups late in the year. Optically, the PA also has some concerns for fans who attend games to watch regular NHLers, not to mention the financial impact some of these players might face shuttling back and forth from the NHL to AHL.

Historically, the NHL has repeatedly asked the PA to eliminate the four call-up rule and the union has shown a willingness to do so, provided the players received some form of concession in return.

With CBA negotiations expected to heat up in the coming weeks, this issue will have its place on the list of changes the league hopes to address at the bargaining table.

Undoubtedly, Burke will raise the topic at the GM meetings in Florida as he did last year, but change will only come when a new CBA is introduced.

It should also be noted, the rule only applies while the AHL affiliate team is in play and expires as soon as their season ends.

For Toronto, that's a problem, given the strength of the Toronto Marlies.

Our call-ups since Feb 27th....

Canadiens recall Frederic St-Denis Mar.24, 2012

Canadiens recall Frederic St-Denis Mar.14, 2012

Canadiens recall Louis Leblanc Mar.8, 2012 Details

Canadiens recall Andreas Engqvist Mar.5, 2012

Canadiens recall Andreas Engqvist and Louis Leblanc from the Hamilton Bulldogs Mar.2, 2012

Still wondering how this all works as I count 6 call-ups, although of only three different players.

Is the limit four players who can move back and forth?? Or are emergency call-ups allowed as noted above????

It's not the number of call ups, it's the number of players.

Well 2 or more of those had to be emergency call ups. With all the DMen we've had injured, it stands to reason St. Denis is one of them, I think Engqvist was called back up so quickly on an emergency basis, possibly?

  • 2 weeks later...

One of the fun things of following the AHL is negotiating the torturous rules  - anyway we're done here too - not sure there was much choice but we would have had a helluva chance with the six guys sent back after the Leaf game. I know the NHL has priority - but I hope next year's admin realizes a strong AHL team only helps the parent clubs success - as previously mentioned some of our top producers paid their dues for a while here in the Hammer - the Leafs have finally learned that - I think you will see them take some serious steps in the next few years as they have developed the Marlies into a strong, well rounded team as opposed to the washed up goons they have been for the last few seasons.

A lot of the better prospects are going to Hamilton next year, as I'm sure you're well aware Swansee. Hopefully a sign of things to come. It was kind of a weird phase though for the Dogs in that, we had a lot of good young talent on our NHL roster and the rest of our top prospects were still in the CHL. I'm pretty excited about the crop hitting Hamilton next year and with us having a top 3 pick and 2 2nd's (including 1 very high one), we'll be able to dramatically improve our prospect pool. It's been lean.
