Forever_Habs10
Again agree, staubitz is nothing more than a fighter. But we've been pushed around for years well he had me excited watching him as of late....just saying
vegasrick
Quite a different looking power play with Markov at QB, eh?
weepingminotaur
DD needs to take some real shots from that right side, not just slap passes or shots hoping for deflections.

BigTed3
LA played last night, so this is one of Minny's easiest games left, being at home too. We really need them to come back and win their game tonight.

weepingminotaur
He had Big Dave Semenko on his line and after Semeko he had McSorley, who followed Gretzky to LA cos Gtretzky needed McSorley and wasn't going to LA without him. Agreed, times have changed. The insertion of the instigator rule has kinda blurred and confused the role of the enforcer. It's not a thing of the past, but it has changed. Again agree, staubitz is nothing more than a fighter. But we've been pushed around for years by the bruins and flyers. We beat the pens and caps but had issues when we faced the flyers. Where we looked unstoppable after eliminating the pens, we hit a wall against a bigger, aggressive flyers team. There are still teams playing old time hockey and as long as their is, there will be a need (diminished, but still a need) for guys who can drop the gloves and mix it up when it's needed. A few weeks ago when we faced the sens, Neil and staubitz were all over each other, pushing, slashing, chirping through the 1st period. The moment RC nailed his butt to the bench, Neil turned his attention to our skilled players. ***** may not have fought that game, but when he was on the ice Neil was preoccupied. I'm not going to use one game against the Sens as a sample. For every game like that, I count dozens where the goon makes no difference one way or another. I think we're on the same page about skilled size. That's what we want, and that's what I think we've added in Cole and Pacioretty et al. But I still don't believe a pure goon like Staubitz, someone who's only good for fighting, does anything for our 'truculence' (LOL at Brian Burke). FirstStar
Gretzky didn't have just an enforcer. He had Mark freakin' Messier, one of the top power forwards of his generation, making sure nobody laid a hand on him. Once again, not a goon, but a skilled forward with size and strength. Also, the game was very different back then. It was slow enough that enforcers could keep up, and the era of the pure boxing-trained goon had yet to arrive. Even the goons had more skill. Staubitz is a complete zero apart from fighting, at which he is not even a heavyweight but a middleweight (that isn't a bash, BTW, just an assessment -- I have nothing against Staubitz personally, he's just a really bad hockey player). Oh btw, Messier was centering the 2nd line. So there's no relevance to protecting Gretzky. Don't need to tell you who was centering the 1st line for Edmonton. Semenko was Gretzky's first enforcer and McSorley took over when semenko left. weak call Was weak, but could play in our favour.

And we can have guys who can do the same thing but not only that. Like FS's example, Chris Neil, he provides good secondary scoring while being a fighter. There is a lot of guys in who are gonna be UFA's this summer.
