weepingminotaur
If Jokinen is Jussi, i agree. If Jokinen is Olli, i dont like two centers in one line... I was thinking of Olli. Pretty easy for centers to move to wing, and Jokinen has played both during his career. He's a veteran, 33, and he threw up 61 points last season. Too late now, but I'm honestly surprised we weren't even in the conversation to land his services.

Werzoth
Jagr to Dallas. One year, $4.5 million. I'm a bit confused by this signing. Dallas is not a cup contender, they don't really have that many strong offensive players as well. Not sure why he's going there (except for the money). So basically the same reason he'd come to Montreal? There are differences. He has familiarity with Plekanec, and Montreal is a European city and a much better place to live than Dallas. But yes, I guess the odds of us signing him were low to begin with. We never even got in on the discussion. Oh well.
BigTed3
Jagr clearly made his decision last year based in large part on money too. He was playing Pit against us against Det and finally bumped the total salary from Philly above what he was rumored to have been offered by the other teams. It sounds like he may have done the same thing this season. I get the feeling he doesn't necessarily care if he's on a legit contender (let's recall that many thought Philly would struggle last year with their new core) so long as he's on a team that's competitive, pays him, and gives him a chance to play. As for Dallas' core forwards, I really like Benn and I've always liked morrow. You'd have to figure age is going to catch up with Whitney and Jagr at some point, and ryder is hit or miss. All in all, I get the feeling from a lot of those guys that their stats are better than their overall level of play.

I think people from Montreal really overstate how fabulous things are here, and further, the extent to which that would matter. It's a great city but let's not pretend Dallas is a dump. Further, it's a one-year contract so I don't think he cares about quality of life. He's not settling.

It would be more of a factor on a long term contract and especially more of a factor if you have a family who has to live in that city for 5,6 or 7 years. Players are so sheltered and they travel so much that it probably wouldn't be as big of a concern as we imagine, especially since they usually bolt during the off season. 77bourque77
Jagr to Dallas. One year, $4.5 million. Dallas can have him at 4.5 million, it would have been nice to see him and Pleks play together, but not at that price tag.

Agreed, we're paying Cole about that and he just came off a 35 goal campaign. Jarg at best will probably score 20-25. A lil high for my liking, glad we didn't pay that. A lil high for my liking, glad we didn't pay that. Not that I wanted to sign him but for 1 year there's basically no risk, that's the main appeal. Everyone is getting 4+ year deals and you can get a potential 50+ point guy for 1 year.
weepingminotaur
I think people from Montreal really overstate how fabulous things are here No, we don't. Montreal is a phenomenal place to live. It's a great city but let's not pretend Dallas is a dump. Dallas vs. Montreal? LOL, no comparison at all. Agreed, we're paying Cole about that No, we're not. We're paying Cole $16 million over 4 years. I don't know why people compare annual salaries on contracts with vastly different terms.

It's a great city but let's not pretend Dallas is a dump. Further, it's a one-year contract so I don't think he cares about quality of life. He's not settling. Exactly, we have bad winters (not as bad as Edmonton or Winnipeg), bipolar fans, relentless media pressure and we also have the language issue. So parts of the city you can get by only speaking English, but there are a lot of places where you need to know French. Then if you have kids in school, you kids are forced into French school, even if they've never spoken a word of French in their lives. If you were an English speaking hockey player with a family, you may like the thought of playing for the Habs. But your wife and kids may think differently. Specially if it's on a short term basis. If you've been living outside of Quebec and your kids have gone too English school, do you really want to uproot them, throw them into French school for 2 years, only to throw them back into English school once your time in Montreal is up? It's one thing for a hockey player to move around from city to city, it's another when you have to uproot your family. That is why some wives decided to stay in a city they're comfortable in (with kids) while the husband goes to another city to play hockey. Then there's strain on the marriage, not as easy thing to be a hockey player with a family. We often forget the human side when talking about professional athletes. Edmonton fans thought Pronger was just being difficult when he asked for a trade to the western conference. He did it for his wife, who never felt at home in Edmonton. With them on the road and often not available during the post season, it's very hard on wives in a new city where they have no friends and/or family. It's one thing having your husband gone for long periods when you have family and friends for support, it's another when you are totally alone in a city. Sure, often wives of other players will try and help the wives of new players, but you can't force people to get along. No, we don't. Montreal is a phenomenal place to live. Dallas vs. Montreal? LOL, no comparison at all. No, we're not. We're paying Cole $16 million over 4 years. I don't know why people compare annual salaries on contracts with vastly different terms. Isn't that 4 mil per season? And Jagr is getting 4.5? I say that's similar. Difference of 1/2 a mil. Or is Jagr's 4.5 over 2 year? I don' see why this bothers you so much, they're both getting about the same per year. Difference is, cole is closer to a 30 goal scorer, while Jagr at this point in his career is closer to 20 goals per season. I'll take the former even on a 4 year deal thank you. henrique_rauen
No, we don't. Montreal is a phenomenal place to live. Dallas vs. Montreal? LOL, no comparison at all. Well, I'm brazilian, I live now in Brazil and I've lived in and around MTL for a year (that's how I managed to like hockey and the habs ) So I'll try to give an "external opinion" on this. Mtl is a great place, BUT for someone coming from another country, is not really that special. Besides, for someone not interested in languages, the idea of facing people speaking french is not very attractive... But even if we do not consider this, like many have stated before, for a one year deal, the city has little influence. They travel nearly half the days of the season and therefore have no time to focus on enjoying the city or anything it can offer.

Think he's just happy to be back and taking the time to play in cities he didn't have time to play in his first time around. He went from Pitts to NY and then the K. No idea where all this talk about the oh-so selfless Jagr is coming from all of a sudden. He supposedly was a good mentor for the kids in Philly last year, good for him, but he wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for the money. Same with Dallas now, 4.5 million is a lot of cash for a 40-year old not named Lidstrom. With Whitney AND Jagr, the Stars now have two 40-year olds making a combined 9 million this coming year. Not sure that's a recipe for success but we'll see. I wanted Jagr because he would've been ideal for our second line, but I'm not prepared to give him 4.5 million a year. We're not a contender, not even with him in the lineup. And not that we needed another 4th liner, but Taylor Pyatt signed with the NY rangers. Bummer, I always liked him and would've preferred him over Armstrong. Good deal for the Rangers. He's much better than your average fourth liner IMO, a former Top 10 pick with lots of size and some offensive upside.
MIASUN
Jagr is a degenerate gambler and needs money. He went to the highest bidder. jennifer_rocket
I see that TSN is reporting Detroit has offered Ryan Suter a $90 million over 13 years. Cap hit would be just under $7 million. $90 million is a lot of guaranteed money, but I'm thinking he could get more on his annual salary than an average of just below $7 million. I am fully expecting that Suter might sign somewhere for closer to $8 million or $8.5 million per season. Maybe he doesn't get 13 years, but he's only around 27 I think, so he'll probably get another contract after this massive one expires in 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 years. I'm a bit confused by this signing. Dallas is not a cup contender, they don't really have that many strong offensive players as well. Not sure why he's going there (except for the money). He'll probably get traded to a contender at the deadline. In Dallas he'll get top six minutes, a chance to play hockey. Then, when play-off time comes around Dallas acquires a future and Jagr gets to play for the Stanley Cup again.
