MIASUN
Or a clause that forces you to honor the ENTIRE term even if the player retires if the contract is signed after the age of 30.
Jbaker8787
I hope they do something, cap on the length, making them honor the whole contract or maybe any given year can't be above or below 20% of the average cap hit. Ie if a player signs a 10 year deal for 100mil the lowest or highest any year can be is 8 or 12, eliminating these throw away years.

Ie if a player signs a 10 year deal for 100mil the lowest or highest any year can be is 8 or 12, eliminating these throw away years. I'd try something simpler than that... I'd say fine, if you want to offer stupid 12-year deals, then go ahead. But if you sign a long-term contract that takes a guy past the age of 35 (the arbitrary cut-off the NHL has already set on guaranteed deals), then the cap hit for the duration of the deal is the average of the five most expensive years. So if a 28 year-old signs a 6-year deal, he's fine. If a 35 year-old signs a 4 year deal, he still falls under current rules. But if a 32 year-old signs a 7-year deal for, say, 10m, 8m, 6m, 6m, 6m, 3m, 2m, the old system would have the cap hit at 5m but the new system would have it at over 7m, which is a more accurate measure of what the club intends to pay the player. kinot-1
Hamilton boy for the Dogs. Good move. http://www.hamiltonnews.com/news/kyle-hagel-coming-home/ After looking at his fights (hockeyfights.com), he's willing to go with anyone. IMO, he's a lightweight who will go with anyone, including middleweights, and heavyweights. but he WILL stick up for his teammates.
jennifer_rocket
So. The signings have really slowed down. Has anyone heard anything on Alexander Semin? I was interested to see where he would end up.

I wonder if the GM's are taking a bit of a break, most of the big name reporters/insiders are done for the summer, maybe that's why it seems slow

THEBIGGESTHABSFAN123
Renaud P Lavoie @RenLavoieRDS Canadiens called Terry Bross (Lagardere Unlimited) for his client Shane Doan. Bross said that Doan has interest for the Canadiens. I doubt he will sign with us, but there is still a chance.

It could be Jagr 2.0 or it could be legit... what's nice to know is that a big-name free agent (even if he's near the end of his career) is considering us as an option. Lavoie is hardly bullet proof but as far as credibility he's a Pulitzer winner compared to Eklund.

He and Gionta can rock-paper-scissors for the right side OK Did you take a minute to read the article I posted a few above? Of course it's biased but it looks like the Canucks could be more interesting for Doan than us.
MIASUN
I'm sure either of them can play the off-wing. Cole is less effective on the LW from what I remember so I don't foresee breaking up that line. I'd say Gionta is better off since he kinda plays like a table hockey winger and fires from everywhere. Anyways, Doan is a longshot. Lavoie is telling the truth I'm sure but a 35 year old Doan likely only leaves the desert for a cup contender. Which we are not. Of course it's biased but it looks like the Canucks could be more interesting for Doan than us. I did unfortunately. Doesn't look good for us. The only positive I took out of it was the mention Doan would probably only be interested in a few teams, so if what his agent said is true it's good to know we're at least on the short list? I actually can't see why he'd sign here over a contender though.

He certainly has better options than coming here, unless we're really going to overspend I guess. On the other hand, adding Doan would make our roster so much better. I'm thinking of something like this: Patches - DD - Cole Bourque - Pleks - Doan Moen - Eller - Gionta Prust - White - Armstrong Our defence would still be pretty bad but that's 4 solid forward lines with size AND skill. DA_Champion
I don't know if AK46 and Alexander Semin are unsigned because they're only getting weak offers, or because they're taking their time picking between different offers. If it's the former, it demonstrates that racism is at a level that I had not previously realized. GMs across the league are harming their team because they're buying into the "Russians are lazy" meme. The converse of GMs underrating Russian players is that they overrate a lot of North American players. Zach Parise was severely overpaid by Minnesota, and I expect Ryan Getzlaf wll be overpaid next summer.

You have to look at the player you're gonna get and in both those guys, their inconsistency and "lack of effort" are genuine concerns for any team (not to mention doubtful attitude at times).
