Canadiens name Bergevin new GM

Recommended Posts

Depending on the people he and Molson surround themselves with, this could be anything from meh to great. I have a lot of trust in Geoff Molson, and this was no quick cursory search. I'm confident the franchise will get it right and get things going in the right direction again.

Now, onto the coach!

WOW,,,,,just WOW,,,,I figured it would be soon, but I am still flabbergasted. Seems OK to me, and I figure that the "coach" question may have come up in the interview, so we may have a coach soon too.

TFP also mentioned he'll be assuming the role of Executive VP of the Habs. That should hopefully dispell the notion of Savard taking that position and potentially pulling the strings. If Bergevin is GM and Executive VP it means Molson is the only guy he reports to and that's as it should be.

I noticed that too, Bean. Very encouraging. Savard in some sort of weird intermediary management capacity above Bergevin would have been very bad IMO.

Things are looking good! :D I'm really excited to see the press conference at 2pm. Then we have the hiring of a new coaching staff and the draft to look forward to.

Well, he played for 20 seasons, was a pro scout, was an assistant coach, then director of player personnel, and an assistant GM for a season so he has experience with the game and some managerial experience. Plus he speaks french so that's a bonus for the Montreal media and one less thing to stir up when they eventually lose it over something.

I guess I'm indifferent to this decision. I'm glad it's someone who has some sort of experience unlike some big name candidates being thrown around but it would have been nice if the new GM had a little more experience than Bergevin.

Yes, it's hard to say because the capologist is really a recent phenomenon and as fans we have very little idea of what a capologist's day-to-day job is like.

I've never understood the job. Shouldn't a capologist really just be a lawyer with the ability to use Excel? The most complicated part of the cap is understanding the ins and outs of the CBA, which is really more for a legal mind than a hockey one. Things like realizing that not all contracts expiring the same year or acquiring Kaberle and Bourque may be a bad idea should be obvious to GM, they shouldn't need a specialist.

Anyways, overall I have mixed feelings. Bergevin is far from the worst choice: he has a decent amount of post-playing experience, has been with a cup-winner, and risen quickly. On the other hand, relatively speaking, he is still fairly inexperienced and it's tough to say how much he contributed to Chicago's success. I also wouldn't have minded someone with a University degree, although it's not a critical factor, I just hope he has some good common sense and intelligence.

Oh man, he's the guy that threw the puck into his own net.

When I read your comment, I didn't realize "threw" would be so literal. Oh man, this is the mind we're counting on to solve last year's mess :P

I thought he said for now.

I'm just glad timmons is staying

According to the TSN article....

Bergevin is also keeping director of scouting Trevor Timmins and assistant GM Larry Carriere as part of his front office. "Trevor Timmins will be sitting next to me at our draft table in Pittsburgh. He's done an excellent job in the past," he said. "I've known (Larry Carriere) for the last seven years and he's well respected in the NHL."

Here's another nice piece of info from NHL.com.

Bergevin is held in high regard as a talent evaluator, with legendary coach Scotty Bowman once saying that he "has got a really good eye" for spotting hockey talent. Rick Dudley, the Toronto Maple Leafs director of player personnel and a former colleague of Bergevin's in the Blackhawks front office, told a Montreal radio station last month that he considers Bergevin to be among "the top one percent" in terms of talent evaluators in the NHL.

Just like Nine1One I love that they're keeping Timmins, and as for Carrière I guess there's something to be said for having a bit of a carry-over from the previous group to help everything run smoothly.

This comment in French makes me smile,,,

je vais m’entourer de personnes qui vont m’aider à prendre les bonnes décisions

He will surround himself with people to help in making good decisions.

Sounds like a winner to me.

According to RDS,,,,he's also guaranteed a bigger representation of French players on the team.

I'm OK with that approach if those players are the best available, or an upgrade on what we currently have.
