  1. 1. What is the most important task Marc Bergevin needs to accomplish this summer?

    • Nail the #3 overall pick
    • Sign Subban and Price to long-term deals
    • Dump salary
    • Sign a big-name free agent
      0
    • Shake up the roster with a trade

It's all important, but if I had to pick one I'd go with the draft pick. It's been far too long since Montreal has had a true superstar-calibre skater, and I hope that having a pick this high in the draft is not something that we get accustomed to seeing in the future. This could be our one and only shot to pick up a real franchise player, and it's imperative that our management team absolutely nails it.

Getting players via trades or free agency is great, sure, but you're inevitibly going to 1) overpay and/or 2) get someone who will be on the downside of his career before the contract ends. PK and Carey will be signed one way or another; I don't think that this isn't important, I just don't think that it's as hard to get this one right. Even if we end up giving them a few extra million a year it still won't have the negative impact that messing up this draft would.

I voted for PK and CP, for the simple reason, that they will become RFAs on July 1, and I think both of those contracts may be complicated to work out. I was tempted to vote for the 3rd pick, as we may never have another such high pick for 20 years. MT has all summer to work out trades, but then again, other teams will be looking to shore up their teams as well.

I went draft pick for the same reasons as you.

By the way, "no pun intended" on the draft pick option Ted? ;)

We have one or two albatross contracts that need to be addressed. Will our management team deal with it decisively, or try to beat around the bush and give them another shot. We need to know our Cap limitations before trying to fill any holes.

I picked re sign Price and Subban but all choices but sign a big name UFA are just as important. Reason I left off a UFA signing is because I don't see it happening, not a great year for It and I think a trade would be more likely. Price and Subban weren't #3 picks but we know what we have with them and a new pick is always somewhat of a gamble. We will get a great pick regardless and it'll be 10 years until we know how it panned out anyway. We all know how important dumping salary is, and we all know how to do it, hopefully Marc pulls through with it, and hopefully exceeds expectations.

I voted the same way for the same reasons.

Let me ask the same question another way: what would you be most disappointed in if it didn't happen? Is it most important to dump salary? Sign our two stars (not just for this season but long-term... i.e. into their ufa years)? Acquire someone new to fill a gap? Or get a key guy in the draft who may not help us right away but could be very valuable down the line?

For dumping salary, even if we don't do it, it'll be off the cap in a few years(none of our guys with bad contracts[Gomez, Kaberle, Bourque] have a lot of years remaining) but if we hit a home run with our top 3 pick, it could mean 10-15 years of profit!

As for BigTed's question, I'd be most disappointed if we mess up with Price and Subban, losing them would mean 5-10 years of being bottom feeders.

That's a good point, never thought of it that way...it would suck to be the new Oilers...

Hard to decide between Nailing (or Galchenyuking) the 3rd pick or locking up PK and Carey. Those assets are really the core foundation for the organization and while it would be nice to unload cap space, the free agent market isn't strong as it is and it's not like we're up against it so while it does need to be done at some point it's not as high of a priority IMO, signing a big name free agent would be fun but doesn't always work and there's only 2 that would really help turn things around and I'd be surprised if either signed with the team that just finished last in the East. A big trade is something that should be explored and again, it would be fun but the real priority here is getting our elite young pieces in place for the next 5-6-7 years and beyond.

That's an interesting way to put it, and looking at it that way I would consider switching over to the signing Price and Subban camp. But the truth is I just really find it difficult to forsee a scenario where we don't sign those two. It just seems like the easiest of all the things that you listed, since even if we screw up and give them some extra cash it won't hurt the team as a whole nearly as messing up any of the other items that you've listed. If we're going to overpay someone, those are the guys that you want to overpay.

I don't think CP or PK will be an issue but with the age of some of our veterans I think we need to score with our third overall pick and hopefully with our subsequent picks. It's not too often we have this chance so I'd like to see us grabbing some eventual homegrown talent instead of overpaying for free agent talent. I'd like to use trades and free agent pick ups to only fill some holes we may have throughout the lineup.
