#81 Lars Eller 2012-2013

He's my new sentimental favorite on the team. He's the kid whom I would most like to see succeed, he just seems like a down to earth, intelligent hard working and driven young man and I would really like to see him rewarded.

Re-posting from mid-Jan.

I'm happy to see Eller getting some post game love and hopefully find his niche long term with this team. I think players like Lars(and both Gallys) seperates us from being a decent team and turns us into a good team.

best game i have seen him play. some gret passes and very intense

He's been lights-out the past couple of weeks, even when he's not putting up points. Very complete game yesterday. That said, I don't think his play in any one game this season has come close to the 4-goal game he put up before!

I'm happy that MT noticed and even praised Eller after the game in his post game interview.

Good for Eller, he deserved to be recognized for his strong play. That pass to gally was a beautiful play, turn to face Gally with a defender on his back, protected the puck and waited for the perfect moment to give Gally the puck.

It was a really nice play.

Yup. Playing sweet hockey. He's tossing his body around and hitting harder than anyone on the team the last week. Plus, maintaining or improving the other stuff. I liked him as trade bait. no more. Bourque anyone?

I have also noticed his improved physical play. :) He was really the only one hitting consistently in the game against the Rangers. Or so it seemed to me.

And what kind of player does Eller want to be?

“I’ve always said that I look up to a player like Tomas Plekanec, who can play in every situation, can play on the power play, can play on the PK, can play when the game is on the line. That’s the kind of player I want to be and I’m working towards it.”

There can be no better role model for Eller at this stage in his career. Glad to see a light has finally gone on in his head. I still require more than a handful of good games to be convinced about his long-term future as a top-six center, but he's taking some key steps in the right direction.

IMHO that game was more of a "right place, right time" thing. If you rewatch the game - or at least the highlights - AK may have actually been the best player on that line that night, but Eller was the guy who finished everything perfectly. Its not taking anything away from him - his hands scored those goals, most others wouldnt have, but I never thought it was a great measuring stick of his "best" because alot of that night felt like like. I think saturday he played a better game - his best as a Hab, imho.

I have also noticed his improved physical play. :) He was really the only one hitting consistently in the game against the Rangers. Or so it seemed to me.

When he was benched those 2 games he was quoted as saying "the coach wants me to play with more passion" - when he came back he seemed tentative - not like a guy who is scared to play physical, but just a guy who is scared to play (Ie: will i be benched if i do something wrong?) once he realized that MT was actually going to give him a chance to succeed (and make some mistakes along the way) his confidence seemed to come & he has been getting better and better, game in & game out. Take him off the plugger line & big surprise: he's found a new gear.

6 points in his last 7 games is nothing to sneeze at for sure.

It seems to me, that when we acquired him, you and I had this discussion & we both saw him with the potential to be a "Tomas Plekanec with size" - which is obviously a long way off, but a great dream nonetheless. It will be interesting to see how his development continues - and if he remains at centre or wing going forward.

I definitely like him and Galchenyuk together. Throwing Cole into the mix certainly helped last game - we'll see how that continues as im sure MT will leave that line in tact for a while.

Yes indeed, and we'll both be jumping for joy if he fulfills the "Tomas Plekanec with size" potential, no doubt. Hilarious that Jack Todd can write a glowing column about Eller without once retracting or mitigating his venom toward Pierre Gauthier, who (if nothing else) pulled the trigger on the deal that sent Halak to St. Louis and Eller to us. But of course, that would require Todd to admit that maybe the goalie we kept is a pretty good goalie. :D

Indeed. The funny thing about Gauthier's trades is that in a vacuum most were not that bad. The biggest problem with him seemed to be getting proper value for players & he seemed to have trouble doing that because he didnt advertise anyone was available (ie Halak) or shipped them off at the "wrong" time (ie Cammy).

Well, Cammalleri is heating up now for the Flames -- I still regret that trade, because we traded one underachieving player with top-end skill for another underachieving player without top-end skill and signed for twice as long (albeit at a lower cap hit). If we were going to flip Cammalleri, PG should definitely have advertised his availability (as you noted); failing that, I would have kept him and gotten his contract off the books at the end of next season.

Eller's development is a nice story, though. It didn't look good for him at all at the start of the season, but he's really starting to play with more confidence and assert himself offensively.

Absolutely agree about the return. I dont mind losing Cammy and I dont mind having Bourque but I think if he was really what we were after, advertising Cammy's availability AND waiting until the trade deadline would have landed us Bourque AND a top pick or a top prospect (Instead we got a mid-level prospect and swapped a 5th for a 2nd rounder)

Considering what he had done the last 2 playoffs, he would absolutely have been THE hot commodity at the trade deadline last year.

Yup, so far so good. I know people were disagreeing with me early because I said several times he just looked nervous, but lets hope this "new eller" is here to stay. Doesnt hurt playing alongside a gifted player like Gally either.

another great game by eller! he is really blossoming into a complete player, hope it keeps up.

Even on nights like last night when he doesnt get on the scoresheet, he still contributed. Gally looked strong again too.

He just seems so "in control" when he has the puck now, it's fun to watch. Also I'm not enough of an Xs and Os guy to really be able to be able to comment too much one way or another on his hockey sense/hockey IQ, but I will say that I'm starting to see Eller make some good decisions without the puck, especially on the forecheck. He's getting good at reading what the opposition is most likely going to do with the puck and them putting himself in the position for a takeaway as a result.

A trade deadline where Paul Gaustad goes for a first round pick? Ya, I would agree we could have probably gotten a decent return for Mike. ;)

I'm really loving this kid right now. He doing everything and doing it well although it would be nice to see him score more goals.

The goals will come with the way he is playing IMO. We were saying the same thing about Pacioretty 9 or 10 games ago and now he has 8 in his last 8 if I'm not mistaken. I would like to try him with Galchenyuk and Gionta.
