As much as it hurts seeing more and more guys jump ship to play abroad (as it means they feel the lockout isnt ending any time soon) its probably a good thing to keep those legs moving in real game-situations, vs. playing scrimmage or just working out alone.

I still think we'll see a (much shortened) season, so providing everyone stays healthy, going to europe is probably not a bad thing.

What worries me is that players are still joining European leagues and the KHL. The players do have a bit of insider info and if they're still willing to pack up and head across the Atlantic, probably means they don't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Yeah, tough to say.

Glass half empty says the guys either just "want to stay busy" or they feel like the end is soon & they want a mini "training camp" in europe.

Glass half full says they know the lockout wont be over for a while - if ever this year - & they have to make other plans.

I'm obviously reading between the lines here... But I don't see a player packing up, either moving his family or leaving them behind to play for less than a month in Europe or Russia.

The way I see it, this is a big move, you're not moving from Toronto to Ottawa, you're moving continents. Money aside (let's all agree that pro athletes can afford it), I don't see them moving there if they honestly felt that a deal would get done in the next month. Even if it was conditioning and to get them back in game form. The travel, getting use to different time zones imo would undo all the conditioning they did by playing overseas.

They're better off playing in a beer league here or renting a rink together and playing pickup with other NHLers. Jet lag and time changes aren't kind to the body(athlete or otherwise). Every time I've been to Europe, I've either crashed for 2 days there or upon my return.

Like I said, I'm trying to read between the lines and judging it on how I would react going back and forth between continents. I wouldn't do it on a short term basis-It would have to be worth my time, a month or more.

Moving there, 1st week getting use to culture, time zone, team, 2nd week feeling good, getting use to everything, 3rd week move back to NA and start that process all over again.

I just don't see it.

The crappy thing about this is.. look at how big eller has got.. im excited to see him tear it up in the NHL next season... or maybe the on after that depending on this lockout :(

Well, he's in Finland now... So if the NHL ends up having a season (even a short one), he'll have shaken off the rust and had time to get use to playing with his bigger frame.

Hmmmm if he became a pwf would that make him the first danish power forward? :P either way he's gonna find it easier cutting to the front of the net now :).

Well considering there's only been like 7 Danish born players ever, i think just about anything he becomes will be a "first" for a Dane :) Neilsen and Bodker are both pretty good (active) Danes, but I think within a few years, Lars will be the "Pre-eminent" Danish Player ;)

Bodker and eller are good buds.. wouldn't mind a trade for him just for that reason.. try bodker out for a season or two i know he hasn't quite lived up to his potential

Players travel and change time zones a lot during an NHL season. I don't think going to Europe and then returning will have any effect on their conditioning.

  • 2 months later...

One of the quietest threads - did anyone keep up with Lars' play during the lockout? Seems like he did ok (highest PPG on his team with exactly 15 pts in 15 games) but I dont know what the competition was like in that league.

Really curious to see how Lars does this year. Im still hoping for that big break-out season, although im not sure he will be given the icetime/linemates/assignments needed to do that.

I think eller could really be a 2 nd line centre if desardians goes down for any amount of time which is very possible with his size. This may be the opportunity eller needs to really show his offenceive abilities. There's only a few people who look as great with the puck as eller. I always think there's a huge play in the making when I see him go!

Hrrrrmmmmmm... Maybe. I think the jury is still out on Mr. Eller. I hope he does well and has a break out season, but I'm not sold on whether or not Lars is a top six forward or a bottom six forward yet. I hope he has bulked up a bit this off-season though.

He hasnt really been given the opportunity to show hes a top 6 forward..i believe the skill is there, is a big kid, I think he is..But the reality of having DD and pleks means he isnt going to get that shot this year.

He is maturing and improving each year, He has appeared to added some more bulk to his body this year. He is a team player and has intelligence. It will be interesting to see how Therrien uses him and how he meshes with his linemates this year

He'll have trouble getting into the top 6, but injuries will undoubtedly happen, and he'll be first in line to jump into the top 6 when they do. He just has to be ready to seize that opportunity. I'd like to see him get some PP time and work the area in back of the net and around the crease. As you said, he's a big body with puck skills, and he needs to exploit that more to put up points.

He's my new sentimental favorite on the team. He's the kid whom I would most like to see succeed, he just seems like a down to earth, intelligent hard working and driven young man and I would really like to see him rewarded.

I'm with you, Miasun. For whatever reason he's just an endearing guy, and you really want to see him succeed. My highlight of the season last year was his 4 goal game - it was just a lot of fun seeing him so happy and seeing the rest of the team so happy for him.

Exactly, even last year, he got 0 PP time, no linemates, and was expected to play defensively, and he still potted 16 goals.
