Yannick Weber

That's well and good, but with a handful of games to go before the playoffs I'm not as worried anymore about whether Weber gets a chance. It may seem callous, but Weber's had his chances last year and the two years before that. Right now I'm going with the guy who can win me games. Kaberle, even on the right side, strikes me as a better fill-in that anyone else we have until Diaz comes back.

I just really don't like the decision not to let Kabs back in, since it seems like they're putting contract considerations over hockey considerations when it's the time of year that you need to do exactly the opposite.

Not to mention the fact that its not like the Gomez situation "go home & we'll buy you out next year" - Kaberle has practiced with the team all year. Players get injured in practice all the time - then you cant buy him out either.

Very very odd.

Anyway, best of luck to Weber. Id love nothing more than for him to play awesome & prove us all wrong.

It was pretty terrible in the defensive zone for most of our players again last night. Weber played 16:49, added 1 assist, and finished 0 for +/-.

Yeah, he didnt look as bad as I was expecting, but he also didnt draw many tough matchups. Based on the sheltered ice time he got, it was not impressive.

Weber didn't look as bad as hit last outing, it's true. But he still falls when trying to keep the puck in at the offensive blue line and his back-skating is terrible. Maybe he has some utility in a Mark Streit role as a 4th line forward/PP expert, but I can't see him as a regular NHL defenceman.

I actually think we could move him to bottom 6 wing duties. From what ive seen is he is pretty decent there and would help our powerplay.

Prust-Eller-Weber?

No more 7th d-man on the fourth line, PLEASE GOD.

I'm with you in that I hate it. Most of the time. But looking at our D corps, this is one instance where I think the benefits may outweigh the downside. It would allow

1. Markov to play fewer minutes

2. Bouillon to play fewer minutes

3. Weber or Kaberle or Beaulieu to play the PP without having them on the PK or having them play big ES minutes

4. MT to have options if one guy was playing poorly or if we run into a penalty to Subban or Gorges

Once Diaz is back, the need goes down, but until then...

True, but if Diaz is ready to play Washington, then it might all be moot.

It would be nice if that were true, but then the issue is still there, I'd still rather Kaberle over Drewiske or Weber as the sixth D.How about Markov/Gorges, PK/Diaz, Franky/Kabs it would leave 2 pairings for the PP. Marky/Diaz and PK/Kabs?

Not disagreeing with that at all, but it's quite clear that Kaberle is no longer in the team's plans, so there's not really much point hoping that he'll be activated.

I agree he's not, and I don't even think in an emergency he would be brought up, we'll continue to go with the youngsters. An official explanation as to why he's being treated this way would be nice though.

What difference would it being official make? Pretty sure we all know the answer to why he isn't playing.

Because if they came right out and said they weren't going to use him again, and why, then it might stop alot of this debate and anger some people have from using drewiske, weber, and rookies, when we have a better talent sitting doing nothing. People may have an idea, but know one knows for sure.

And maybe I'm just nosey and like to be informed :P

I don't really think they need to say Kaberle won't be used. It seems pretty clear to me he's press box bound for the rest of his time with Montreal. When they're giving trials to Pateryn, Tinordi, and Beaulieu over him it becomes kind of obvious. And now even Yannick has worked his way back into the lineup ahead of him after playing only two previous games.

Oh I know it's obvious we're not going to use him, and I know he has defensive short comings, but right now we're paying him and he is better than our other options so I was just expressing my opinion and curiosity. That's all.

I think we're all kind of blown away that he's not being used for risk of injury. As other board members have mentioned, the risk is pretty small that he would get injured and remain injured into the window for compliance buyouts. I guess it's just a strict decision management or ownership has made and that's that.
