#67 Max Pacioretty 2012-2013

Not completely sure how I feel about the trend of 6 year contracts, no issue with the term on Price or Pacioretty but just hoping that we're not seeing a repeat of the forgettable mistakes of summer 2009 where we had basically the whole team expiring in 1 summer and a mad dash to fill out the roster. Price, Gorges and Pacioretty all already expiring at the same time. Those are tough contracts to negotiate so to have to do all 3 that summer as UFA's may end up being problematic. Especially if we give Subban the same term.

I think Pacioretty has 1 more year on his current contract so he'll be UFA the season after Price/Gorges.

Yeah, just came to edit my post. You're right.

4.5 per, Mckenzie.

Don't teams/players have to wait until January 1, 2013 to sign new contracts or is that only if the season is underway?

Not to my understanding, although I maybe missing something, it could be that the contract won't actually get officially filed with the league until the 1st?

Awesome deal to say the least. It's always tough to look at long term deals - especially considering our team has been mostly unwilling to hand them out compared to other teams - but considering Patches ability to play a physical position and not lose significant time to injury, I think this is just a steal of a deal. Without counting the eggs before they hatch, 4.5 Mill for 6 years is unbelievable value considering Max won't likely hit his prime for another couple of years. This is how Cup winners are built: Good production with excellent value (Carter, Richards, Brown, Kopitar, Quick).

Best of Luck Max, go get 40!

The cap hit looks great and he's the type of player I don't mind locking up longer term.

6 years (7 for all intents and purposes) is a little risky given limited sample size but worth it in my opinion. The new CBA could potentially make it seem like slightly less of a good deal, but that's a minor concern.

The only real downside I see is he becomes a UFA at age 30: it's kind of nice to have the player a free agent in their last year of RFA eligibility to lock them up long-term, although doing that likely would cost us more. With that said, there's some risk because we don't know the new CBA's UFA age (eg. if it turns out to be 30, in hindsight we may look back wishing it was just a 5 year deal).

All things considered though, I'm quite happy with the deal.

That's a great contract. In terms of people inquiring about waiting until January 1st, I believe you can extend any time in the last year of a contract which would be any time after July 1st. I don't have any CBA sections to reference, just going by past re-signings, the fact Crosby was extended, they're already talking about extending Hall etc.
