#26 Josh Gorges 2012-2013

Recommended Posts

Reading back through some comments about Josh when we first acquired him and during his first season with us:

I can't see him becoming anything more than 6 , 7 or spare D man
If this guy makes the team over Ryan O'Byrne or Dan Jancevski I'll drink a vat of boiling lamb's saliva.
I like Gorges and would love to see him extend a contract in Montreal. He'll never be top 4 but we could definately use him.
He brings virtually nothing - he's absolutely no physical, he has no point-shot to speak of, he isn't an especially good passer, and he's a horrible skater. And he isn't especially smart, either.

He sure proved 'em wrong!

Both him and Marky have taken a brutal hit so far. Marky against T.O. and Josh from Florida. Was nice to see them both shake it off.

It's incredible, but you hardly remember that Gorges also had a significant knee surgery just two years ago. You don't notice Galchenyuk had one last season. Hopefully, Markov gets to that point too. But agreed with the above posters that Gorges has been solid to start the season.

he has somthing that counts as much as talent. heart. now when you have both you have it made! we also have kaberle who has talent and no heart. who would you rather have on your team?

I'd rather have Kaberle at 28 when he was throwing up 60 point seasons than Gorges at 28 (now). Kaberle is just done now, he's soft but he's always played that way. He's just flat out done. Was good, now bad and our GM acquired him at the worst possible time.

Wonder how Josh feels playing third pairing defense... though playing with Diaz is not so bad really.

Thing is, he's not really on a third pairing because there is no third pairing. Therrien clearly loves using Markov the most, but he's spread his ice time amongst the other D men fairly evenly. To me, Bouillon is the #6 guy, but he's paired with Subban, who I believe is the #1. Markov is your #2 guy, paired with Emelin, who's probably the #4 on the depth chart, while Gorges is your #3 guy and is paired with Diaz, whom I'd say is #5. The bottom line is that we don't really have a top pairing, middle pairing, or lower pairing. Therrien's shuffled the cards, which helps to prevent a weak duo, but it also prevents us from having a top pairing of guys on the ice for more time than the other guys. Subban should ideally be getting 24-26 minutes a night, with Gorges in the 22-23 minute range. But having each guy paired with a lesser D man prohibits that slightly unless there are a lot of special teams minutes.

If we agree on the depth chart you've presented... then Markov could/should be playing with Subban; Gorges with Emelin and Bouillon with Diaz. I'm not sure how good that would be for Josh, but it could probably be good for Emelin playing the left-side with Gorges very competent on the right. I think it would be okay for the rest of the d-men and the team. You have your top pairing with youth and experience still spread out across the defense. Josh may be happy with that.

I don't think you necessarily have to pair 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. But I'd like to see Markov-Gorges, Emelin-Subban as the top 4 and let those guys log a bit more ice time than the 3rd pairing, which really only needs to be a dependable duo and nothing more.

That works too if you truly consider Markov-Gorges a top NHL pairing I guess. One could argue that Emelin-Subban could end up the stronger of the two.
