Tomas Kaberle

Exaggeration aside, I agree that he needs a far more robust defensive partner, which is why pairing him with Diaz is so strange. Bouillon, while undersized, would be a better choice & if we're going to regularly give him the sort of minutes he had in game one, Gorges may not be a bad idea to at least try.

Well Therrien was back to pairing Kaberle and Bouillon today, which makes more sense for both players. But then again, Therrien had more sensible pairings for the whole training camp and came out with the head-scratching pairings of Bouillon-Gorges and Kaberle-Diaz at game time. Kaberle had a hard time last year because he was constantly being paired with soft, offensive D men like Weber and Campoli and Diaz and because his partner kept changing every two games. If Therrien has any common sense, he'll put Kaberle with one guy and make that guy a defensively-sound partner.

Kaberle-Subban? After seeing Markov-Diaz on the powerplay together, having a second wave with Kaberle-Subban could be interesting perhaps.

The question mark on defense when and if Subban is in the line-up is interesting. I wonder if another team would be interested in Kaberle if the Habs would take back part of his salary/caphit as was apparently possible in the new CBA.

You know, if you give him a good partner, forget about the contract, and just let him do his best. Hes not that bad.

Bingo to both comments.

This is a 33 year old perennial all-star. Find him the right partner and and manage his minutes and he could be a valuable member of this team - 3rd pairing and PP specialist. I know his price-tag is high for that, but if it works, who cares?

Especially if you pair him with Franky, who has a low price tag. Meaning Diaz plays with gorges and Diaz also has a low tag, so it balances out.

I've been pretty satisfied with him, although when PK finally comes back... does he sit? Who else can you pull out at this point?

You would think (barring some terrible play by Emelin or Boullion) that it would have to be one of our offensive-minded guys coming out when Subban comes back. And at the rate that Diaz has been producing, if he were to come back next game you'd have to think that it would be Kaberle that would sit.

Which is a bit of a shame, since he's been pretty good so far.

If Galchenyuk stays then MB will most likely move him (because of financial constraints) to a team that needs his feeding ability on the blue line for the PP(Nashville?). This would allow MB to hold onto the one special buyout option to possibly free cap space next year.

I believe it would be nigh impossible to move Kaberle right now (unless you were taking back as much salary). If he continues to play reasonably well this year, he may well be tradeable in the summer (should we opt to go that route) but right now he has a lot of things to prove after a pretty bad stretch last year & a bit of the previous.

According to Capgeek, we have close to $6.5m in salary left, if Galchenyuk stays, then obviously that cuts into that amount, although some of his salary can be deferred to next year - not ideal, but $7.2m comes off the books for Gomez then too.

I dont think we'd have to move Kaberle (mostly because i dont think we'd find a partner) to fit Gally & PK on the roster, but we would probably have to move someone.

I don't really see the positive sides that people see so far this year. I think people rely too much on what he did in the past.

He was not good defensively tonight against the Caps (turn overs again, just like the last 2 games), same thing offensively (he's pretty much invisible). On the PowerPlay he waits way too long with the puck which means the defensive guy has time to get right on him and break the play.

I guess "soft" just describes his play the best.

I thought he was pretty decent the first two games. He didn't play that well tonight, but I don't think he's as bad as some make him out to be. It just depends on your expectations.

Well I don't judge players on expectations but on how they play each game.

It's kind of fun to watch the time spent in our own zone when some D are on the ice. Big difference. When Markov is there, he gets that puck out very fast. He battles for it, gets it, boom pass and we're on the O. With Kaberle on, the other team is usually cycling our zone because Kaberle does not get physical, he just pokes with his stick from afar and not entering the player's space. He also gives the blue line pretty easily.

I'm not comparing Markov to Kaberle by the way (it would be very unfair), just a general reference.

Diaz has improved a lot, he's more aggressive. Bouillon we all know how he is along the boards. Emelin is very agressive as well. Gorges will always battle for the puck.

Replacing Kaberle with Subban would make our D corps extremely competitive.

Markov Emelin

Gorges Subban

Bouillon Diaz

That's a solid defense corps.

It really is looking a LOT better than I expected this offseason. Having Kabs as the #7 isnt too shabby either. You could sub him in as a PP specialist from time to time too. I dont think MT likes to dress 7 dmen (which is a good thing most of the time :P)

I'm looking at our defense, and if/when we add PK, I'm wondering if we can't trade him this season without having to buy him out. Looking at teams with cap space, I think there are some candidates who could use a specialist like him.

Colorado, Edmonton(bit of a long shot), and Anaheim are those that come to mind. I think Dallas and the Islanders are also possibilities. I would say Carolina, but they sent him our way for Muller, so it probably won't happen.

We got him for a middle of the pack pick IIRC, so we could probably get something similar for him if these teams are in contention down the stretch. I would keep an eye on Colorado especially. They could use just about any veteran if they get close.

We got him for spacho man

we gained a younger defenseman at the loss of a great nickname and the loss of some of our humor in the get to know your canadiens videos.

I don't think Kaberle has to worry about being permanently replaced by Yannick Weber too much.

But he does need to worry about Subban coming back.

Markov, Subban, Gorges, and Emelin are all firmly ahead of him. Bouillon has played well and appears to be a Therrien favorite. So unless Diaz falters, Kaberle is #7 and will have to await an injury to get into the line-up. He'll have 1-2 games to overtake someone else before Subban returns.

With Subban in the line-up can we assume that Bouillon and Diaz are 5th and 6th d-men then.

Markov-Emelin; Gorges-Subban; Bouillon-Diaz

Could Kaberle be traded to a team looking for an experienced d-man with his attributes I wonder?

The rumours are Weber, but ideally it would be Kaberle if we can get some value. Should we run into injury problems though,,,,,i think i would prefer Kabs in there over Weber, or anybody in Hamilton right now.
