Tomas Kaberle

Recommended Posts

The rumours are Weber, but ideally it would be Kaberle if we can get some value. Should we run into injury problems though,,,,,i think i would prefer Kabs in there over Weber, or anybody in Hamilton right now.

Kaberle as a 7th d-man paid 4.25 million just doesn't sit well with me. Yeesch!

TBH kaberle isnt that bad, but i would take st denis over both him and weber.

I agree that Kaberle isn't all that bad... St. Denis though not to my liking.

The money sucks for a #7 D however we don't need the Cap room this year, so it's a non issue for the team. Unless we're looking to add another big peace at the trade deadline his hit won't hurt us this year sitting on the bench. Who knows,,,,if we're patient enough we might just be able to deal him if we fall out of the running come that same deadline.

Like I said in another thread, maybe we could deal both and sign a guy like Campoli to a cheap 1 year deal. But that scenario is pretty unlikely.

I'd be happy to deal both Weber and Kaberle, but not to bring back Campoli. I'd rather have St-Denis or bring back a guy like Mara, who was a stellar 7th D man the last time he was here. I want the 7th D man to be a guy who won't hurt the team, not a guy who's here to provide offensive flair but is a defensive risk. Let the stars be the stars and let's just get a guy who can be solid defensively at the bottom end of the pecking order.

Yes give St.Denis a chance as #7 or even Mara. Mara has size & knows how to use it. I like that plus the beard. Let's stay completely away from Campoli 2.0 in a Habs jersey. Agreed.

Exactly my philosophy on a good 7th d-man. Just a guy who plays a simple game and won't get you in trouble. He's doesn't have to put up points.

To be fair after Maras first stint with us i was less than enthused to see he was back. Maybe the same can work with campoli :P who knows maybe hes added 100 pounds

Who is left out there?

That would be St. Denis. And we dont need to trade any.

It's not uncommon at all for teams to play stretches without 2 or even 2 defensemen. Keep them all, they could be needed.

Its a short season with enough changes. Roll with what is there and see how far they take themselves, and us along for the ride as fans.

To be honest, I wouldn't trade Kaberle at this point for anything that wasn't a steal. I think he's worth way more to us, even as a 7th defenceman, than what we would get for him in a trade.

That kind of sucks for him personally, as it's possible that he sits out for most of the year. Everyone's talking like that's a given, though - have we all forgotten so quickly what happens to defencemen in Montreal? ;)

When somebody on the back end gets injured - and somebody WILL get injured - I don't see anyone available that's a better fill-in than Kaberle (inside or outside the organization). No, he doesn't live up to his contract; I think we've all got that figured out by now. But we don't need cap space this year AND we still have a free buy-out next year, so for all intents and purposes his salary doesn't need to factor in the discussion at all.

With that bit of business out of the way, who are we going to get to fill in that's a better hockey player than Kaberle? Some 900K free agent? The price is right, sure, but there's a reason these guys aren't signed. People talk a lot of hyperbole about Kabs being the "softest player ever" and whatnot, but that's really just exaggeration. I agree that he's not as defensively responsible as you want your $4M defenceman to be, but objectively speaking he's still a whole lot better than whatever plug fill-in we could dig up on short notice who hasn't played a game all year.

And people are bring up St. Denis, but as Roy33 said in another thread he really doesn't seem to be in the organization's long term plans right now. He wasn't even called to the (admittedly short) training camp and he's a UFA after this year. He's also not as good a player as Kaberle. Again, he may have more "bang for the buck", but as I said earlier we don't need the cap space so you can't make the decision based on salary. The only other thing that I would consider would be bringing up one of the other young guys from Hamilton to give them some experience, but from what people are saying it doesn't sound like any of them are quite ready for the NHL just yet.

At the trade deadline, if we're out of the running, by all means trade him for whatever you can get. Kaberle, at this point, doesn't seem like he's going to be a part of our future. But in the meantime why would we throw away such a great insurance policy for some low draft pick that will probably never play in the NHL?

Exactly. This is essentially what I was trying to say, you just managed to get it done in fewer words :P

Agree with all you've said.

I still think Kabs could be valuable to this team and I absolutely think his value as an insurance policy outweighs his trade value (which I think is extremely low if at all, right now). With 1 more year left on his contract, im not sure if he has any value at trade-deadline either TBH.

In theory it's a great idea to keep Kaberle as insurance and if we have to keep him, so be it but there's a few other factors. First being that he's owed 4.25 million next year and if we can save Molson having to cut a buyout cheque, you do that. Especially on a 7th D but second and more importantly, if Kaberle were to get hurt or something we're stuck not being able to buy him out and we really could use that cap space this summer. If we have a chance to remove him from the roster IMO we take it. Even for nothing. The risks outweigh the benefits at this stage.

Agreed, especially with Subban back on the roster. Absolutely no reason to pay Kaberle $4.25 million to be the 7th d-man AND injury risk, which would stop us from buying him out this summer (and with Bourque's elevated play, it seems as if Kaberle is the logical buyout choice). Flip him for a bag of pucks, the return is irrelevant, if we get anything for him, great, but really, make the deal for the future. We can easily find a cheaper, younger 7th d-man who won't hamstring us against the cap this summer if he gets injured.

Never considered the injury angle. Very good point. Kabs has to be the one to move unless the Habs aren't considering him as a buyout candidate. Hopefully finding a trade partner this year will solve the issue.

I like the idea of adding Mara. A cheap, reliable, steady, tough d man. With the compressed schedule we could take a guy like Boullion out of the lineup for a game here and there to rest him. He's a much cheaper option than Kaberle too, which is nice. But if (knock on wood) a guy like Markov goes down again Kaberle would be a better sub. That being said, if a decent offer comes along for Kaberle and/or Weber, we should jump at it. These guys are liabilities in our own end and are expendable. Especially if we do sign another depth guy

Also, IF we can trade him beyond avoiding the injury risk and saving Mr. Molson's money we save a buyout so if things do go wrong with a bigger contract we have that in our back pocket the next 2 summers. It's a big asset in case Markov blows his knee out again or Bourque takes a turn for the worse. A lot can happen. If someone is willing to take Tomas for free, I'm letting him go.

Hopefully with Subban back we can showcase him for a trade. Markov-Diaz will continue to man the points on our 1st wave PP until they stip producing, so Kaberle-Subban would be the default 2nd PP pairing. Hopefully they can get some points and Kaberle can prove he's still a capable PP specialist. I could see there being a market for that kind of player at the deadline. Who knows, maybe the Bruins will give up a 1st and a prospect for him again :P
