South African double amputee Oscar Pistorius has been arrested in the shooting death of his girlfriend model Reeva Steenkamp. The shooting took place outside Pretoria, South Africa where a 9mm handgun was found. According to ESPN, there had been previous incidents of domestic violence at Pistorius's home and he was the only suspect. Police have not released circumstances of the shooting. Pistorius had competed at the London Olympics and also at Paralympics where won two golds medals and one silver. In all likelihood, he is finished even if he is acquitted.

I just read these 2 headlines,,,and wondered,,,,"how is it that these people know that he didn't murder her". Were they there? Are they witnesses? It seems that just because you feel you know the person, or are related to him, doesn't mean he didn't do it.

Pistorius has now been charged with premediated murder and would be facing life in prison if convicted of this charge and also the harshest bail requirements under South African law. South Africa has reportedly the one of the worst rates of violence against women and the highest rates of women killed by an intimate partner.

South African judge Bert Bam has eased bail restrictions and ruled yesterday Pistorius could travel overseas to compete which would allow him to compete at the world championship in Moscow. Pistorius must still travel under certain conditions - provide an iternary of his travel plans at least one week before he is due to leave and hand over his travel documents to the court within 24 hours of his returning home. His passport will be held by a court while he is in South Africa.
