BeanCountingHab
But the goal isn't to assess his absolute value relative to other players: it's to assess his value relative to other players who are already under contract. We've got three more years of Bourque, one more year of Gionta (who's also a better all-around player), and Gallagher on a cheap ELC. Why add another contract for an aging PP specialist who can't skate particularly well and whose main attribute is his shot? Well sure then, I agree and am also loathe to add another contract for any substantial term/money. My only point was I wouldn't say he's that low on the depth chart, especialy in terms of offensive production when there's a decent chance he'd be the second most productive winger (after Patches) for the next couple of years. The cost benefit of that with Gallagher coming along nicely and Kristo on the way is questionable and it's why I wouldn't like the idea of 3 + years. maddienmike
Are we sure Kristo is coming here,we need a scorer, there are no good ufas that we can afford, and I think thay have all been resigned, not a lot in the way of scorers on the Dogs roster,we don't know when Borque will be back,we let him walk ,then what is the alternative,I like Ryder was upset when we let him go,but not that mad about him,but who can replace him.the good forwards don't come on the market much. GO HABS GO I've said it before in the If I Were GM thread, I would be kicking tires on Gaborik. He could potentially be had for a pretty good price if the Rags are considering it a kind of salary dump move. Not a lot of teams out there who would be interested could take on that salary/cap next year.

The problem is that his 7.5M contract is an even bigger hit next year with the cap going down. It'd be hard to justify giving 12-15% of your entire salary mass to one player if that guy's not a Crosby/Stamkos/Malkin/etc. type. Gaborik's a good player, but while he's an elite scorer, I don't see him as being a guy who will carry a team. While he still has value, he's not a guy you go out and give 7.5M to. I'd ask whether you'd prefer to have Plekanec and Ryder or whether you'd prefer Gaborik and Halpern. I'd stick with the guys we have, quite frankly. Agreed. with the overall core we have right now, Id do my very best to stay away from "high profile/big contract" players right now.

LOL, yes the obvious Gomez reference didn't escape me. It's a huge cap hit, but it's for one more year so as long as he fits it's kind of irrelevant. Again, we'd have to be paying peanuts to get him for me to be interested. I understand your Plek Ryder vs Gaborik Halpern argument but it may just be Ryder vs Gaborik if the cap space is there. ramcharger440
ryder 2.0 is impressing me so far! he really seems to have turned a corner and is much more consistant than he was with us or boston.
weepingminotaur
ryder 2.0 is impressing me so far! he really seems to have turned a corner and is much more consistant than he was with us or boston. Well, he was a 65-point player for us in his first or second season, and a consistent 30-goal scorer, so I'm not sure about that. He plays within his skill set more, but his production hasn't really changed.
ramcharger440
i am not really talking just about his points. he is a better passer than i remember and he chips in a bit more defensivly than he used to, although that is definetly not his strong suit! and i find he is more involved in the harder action and less of a fringe player than before. i just see an overall improvement. Noob616
He did exactly what we traded for last night, was the perfect finisher to ride shotgun with Plekanec.

There's no question in my mind that he is a more complete player than he used to be, although playing alongside two very well-rounded and responsible players in Plekanec and Gio doesnt hurt. He used to play with Ribs almost exclusively so when they werent scoring, there wasnt a whole lot going on on that line.

FanFromAB
Loving Ryder, this trade is one that I loved right from the start....I did question Ryder's effort and his defensive play at first but he's winning me over. Keep sniping em Ryder!

It's basically just him, Robidas, Loui Eriksson, and Kari Lehtonen down there in Dallas. Rather grim.

ChiLla
Not sure what it is but I feel like Ryder's still somehow getting the short end of the stick around here. Solid production since the trade, he's doing exactly what he's being paid for, i.e. putting up points. Can we please re-sign this guy soon? Thanks

Fair enough but what other options are you referring to exactly? Just being curious as the UFA market seems pretty thin this year. Sure, there's always the option of trading for a proven 20-30 goal scorer but it's going to cost us big time IMO.

weepingminotaur
I'll say it again: last year, nobody thought Gallagher would be doing what he's doing right now. Sometimes, the best solutions are in-house. Maybe next year Galchenyuk is ready for a top-six role. Maybe Kristo comes in and has a good NHL rookie season. Maybe Bergevin swings an unexpected trade (kind of like how we got Ryder in the first place) this summer. My point is: we shouldn't lock ourselves into Ryder prematurely. He's a good piece to have, but not irreplaceable, especially at his age and given the limitations of his skill set. If we can re-up him for one or two years this summer, great, but if I'm Bergevin, he's not my Plan A and I'm certainly not extending him in the middle of the current season. We didn't give up any futures for him, so it's not like there is an onus to re-sign him to justify the trade. In fact, we traded for him mainly to get out from under the kind of contract people are now proposing to give Ryder for almost the same set of years as Gauthier gave Cole. Not necessary IMO. ramcharger440
i really like him but i would wait to see how the year finishes out. we have some young guns on the way and we can still sign him for next year if we feel we need him.
