kinot-1
Dreger also claimed there's some talk Leafs captain <a data-cke-saved-href="https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/348870540003528704" href="https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/status/348870540003528704" target="_blank rel=" external"="" style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px; color: rgb(226, 0, 26); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Dion Phaneuf is “in play,” though Nonis said no one has yet contacted him about the blueliner's availability.Given Phaneuf's eligibility for unrestricted free agency next summer, it wouldn't be surprising if Nonis floated his captain's name in the trade market to gauge his value.Phaneuf's come under criticism for his defensive miscues. His salary for next season is $5.5 million, but his cap hit is $6.5 million, which could be tough to move under a declining salary cap this summer. kinot-1
With their second compliance buyout on the eve of unrestricted free agency, general manager Dave Nonis cashed out second-line centre Mikhail Grabovski, likely clearing the way for a more accomplished if not cheaper option in the middle. The move will immediately clear $5.5 million US in cap space, but cost Toronto a little more than $14 million US the next eight years. Grabovksi played five years in Toronto and was initially a good second-line centre when paired with Nikolai Kulemin. From the Van Sun: "Mikhail Grabovski was bought out by the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday, and the veteran centre did not go quietly." CANADIENS27
NHL.com. Toronto re-signs Tyler Bozak to a 5 year $21 million contract and David Clarkson to a seven year deal.
FirstStar
leafs are comparing clarkson to Wendel Clark. Similar type players, but imo Clark is way above clarkson. I would've liked to sign clarkson, but not at the price the leafs signed him for. Think that contract may come back to bite them in the butt. He'd be a good player to have, but the money/term that they gave him just seems over the top. It's especially odd seeing as how they just bought out Grabovski for being in the exact same situation - great player to have but with too high a contract. Guest
I think that Clarkson brings a lot more to the table then Grabs as far as consistent effort. Grabs can disappear for long stretches of time and doesn't have the ability to counter that with other aspects of his game. I see him as pretty much a one dimensional player who can make a difference when he gets hot, but otherwise is a team drag . It's a question of whether or not a team can afford to give up a roster spot for that type of player. He kind of reminds me of Ryder. Nice to have at times but can be a real bummer when he's in sleep mode. IMO,,,,his long term deal is more a mistake then Clarkson's. Both are bad, but if i had to choose one, i would pass on Grabs. Graeme-1
The money is a little on the high side, but not that bad. The 7 years is the bizarre part.
FirstStar
Agreed money, and term of contract are bad. He also has a hard time staying healthy with his physical game. He's only scored one 30 goal season. If he's getting 4.5 mil, wonder what Kessel will ask for. No way he'll be happy with a mil more than clarkson. If he stays healthy it could work out, if not, this is Komi 2.
kinot-1
This "could" go in the "Good Laugh" thread too. "New MLSE CEO Tim Leiweke already has the Stanley Cup parade route planned for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Don’t spit out your coffee. We’re serious. “I have it planned out, and it’s going to be fantastic,” Leiweke said Monday in an interview with Bloomberg’s Hugo Miller and Eric LamJul. “If you can all dream about that and get that in your mind, we’ll have something we’re all driven toward.” Full article here: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/leiweke-has-cup-parade-planned-for-leafs/

kinot-1
"The Maple Leafs haven't been able to make any progress in contract negotiations with restricted free agent center Nazem Kadri and defenseman Cody Franson. Leafs assistant GM Claude Loiselle confirmed the news to the Toronto Sun, as talks continue. With roughly $4.9 million in available salary cap space, the Leafs do not have enough room to sign both players; they'll either have to deal Franson or another player or two to fit everyone under the cap." This is going to be good. Kadri will want around 6 mil. per season,,,, and Franson will want about 4-5 mil. per season. Somebody will have to go, and it won't be minor-leaguers either. I love it. I "would" however love to see an offer sheet for Kadri, from another team
habby4ever
I "would" however love to an offer sheet for Kadri, from another team That would be a dream, come true lol Leafs general manager David Nonis politely declined to discuss the matter in detail Wednesday, but he did give a strong impression he is managing to sleep well. By all accounts, Kadri wants a big raise and a long-term contract, one that reflects the star quality he has showed from time-to-time. In 99 NHL games, Kadri has 26 goals and 37 assists, respectable numbers but hardly ones that merit an immediate bump to, say, $4-million a year. Nonis may be thinking of $2-million in the short-term, while Kadri is probably looking at someone like Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane, who had 11 fewer points last season but signed a six-year deal for an average of $5.25-million a year. Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche, who had 43 points last season, has a bridge contract for a $3.5-million average. Still, there is no reason to think this cannot be done. It’s just that no one should expect it to be finished before training camp starts.
