NEW YORK, N.Y. - An Islanders team official confirmed that the team will buy out the remaining eight years of oft-injured goalie Rick DiPietro's contract.

The 31-year-old DiPietro, the No. 1 pick in the 2000 NHL draft, will be placed on waivers Tuesday before the compliance buyout can be used, the Islanders official told The Associated Press on Monday night on condition of anonymity.

The club will have to pay DiPietro $1.5 million for each of the next 16 years—double the years left on his original 15-year pact with New York. That amount won't count against the Islanders' salary cap.

The Islanders, who are moving to Brooklyn in 2015, played the New Jersey Devils at their future home on Saturday night. There had been concerns about the basketball-designed arena's unorthodox hockey setup, which features about 15,000 seats, some obstructed views on one end, and a video board centered over one of the blue lines.

Ouch. As if the Isles could get any worse. Okposo is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and so is d-man Visnovsky with an upper-body injury.
