DD has always had to prove himself, he's made a career of proving the doubters wrong.

But this isn't jr, this is the NHL, top of the ladder.

i think he can remain in the NHL, at what level is to be seen. But if the league is seriously conidering expansion, then for sure DD should have a decent career.

Time for DD to start living up to his new contract, which starts this season. 3.5/season is peanuts for someone playing a top 6 role. It's a little high for a grinder role, but isn't uncommon. The amount payed to his is manageable, the length of his contract could be the issue, especially if he can't regain his 1st (full) season stats and build on that.

If he could give the Habs somewhere between last seasons 82 games pro rated numbers, and 2011/2012 numbers he'd be worth his 3.5 easily, and I see no reason why his game will suffer any drop off over the duration of the contract.

Never liked Desharnais much at all to be honest, but he's become really underrated in the eyes of many Habs fans.

Well that's it, he's signed for the next 4 years. Complaining about it for the next 4 years isn't going to change anything. Best thing to do is show our support and who knows, he may surprise.

60 points/season, would be a fair production for what he's earning. If he can break the 60 point plateua, the rest is gravy.

As I read the forum posts there is a recurring theme regarding DD. He's too small, doesn't fit in, he's (at least) one too many diminutive forwards in the top 9 etc etc.

While all of these statements are true, I have two suppositions of what MB may be thinking/planning.

First of all, it's tough to argue that at the present time the Habs would receive little in return for trading DD. IF MB wants to trade DD he needs to play well within the first few months, at which point I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved.

OR

MB has made it abundantly clear that he is building for the future. Perhaps MB sees DD returning to the player he was before the extension and in two years or so he'd only be one of two small players in our line-up (him and Gally-B ). I don't see Gio being around past this season and I truly believe Briere was an "in-the-meantime" solution. Here for two years then gone. In two years time we'll hopefully see more of our bigger young prospects in the lineup and DD's size will no longer be an issue because he'll be insulated by size around him.

Hi MWM, and welcome to the forums BTW, you can introduce yourself here: http://fans.canadiens.nhl.com/community/topic/10924-habs-fans-introduce-yourselves/

Now as far as DD is concerned, most, if not all of us, are basing DD's performance on last year, where he was abysmal up front, and on the PP. He got top minutes on the PP and ES, but did little to deserve them. That said, this year, at least in the pre-season games, he has upped his worth to the team. At times he made me think of him as Gallagher .2. His value to the team will be assessed in the coming months, and I would hope he earns that contract. If he contributes like we know he can, then I would say keep him.

It may be unfortunate, but I think David has become the product of Marc Bergevin's deciding to extend his contract at 3.5 million for three years at a time when there was a definite question mark in terms of the team's size issues with top nine forwards. It could have been different if Gionta and Gallagher were not around and he hadn't compounded the issue by signing another small forward in Daniel Briere.

This could and most likely should be Gionta's last year as a Hab.

In the meantime trying to find a way to spread the size issue across 4 lines is likely the only way to deal with this for now.

He played a pretty bad game IMO.

The effort was there, but it was the same problem as last year, leafs take away the gaps and play the body.

I feel we need to trade him, as Ted was saying in the Eller thread we can use Plekanec and Eller as our current 1-2 punch and either try Galchenyuk on the third line centre spot, or keep him on Ellers wing, and find someone to play as our third line centre.

Also I hope this DD-Briere experiment doesn't last long.

Agreed. The problem is with DD's line you end up giving away valuable minutes that could go to either Pleks' or Ellers' line. If Eller's line (as I expect) continues to play well, they will get more offensive ice time which will end up likely costing Plekanec's line as they are useful as checkers too. There is too much talent on Plekanec's line not to get some offensive starts but that may be what happens as we need to shield DD's line.

Thing is, if the team decided to move DD, i think they would have to restructure the top 9 completely because im not sure what you'd do with Briere or Patches if that happened.

Having said all that, I dont think DD will be moved - not yet, at least. Unless a perfect deal fell into MB's lap I would say DD is with us for at least 1 more year. All the more reason not to have signed him for 4.

There was no praise, however, of David Desharnais's line, who the coach said needs to see more compete from.

That lines big minutes were cut to under 14 for Desharnais, who did not have linemate Max Pacioretty, after he suffered a wrist injury on opening night.

“He's a big part of our line,” said Desharnais. “He's the shooter. He's a big guy making up some space for us. Everyone's playing well. If we want more ice, we just have to play a little better and we will have our ice time.”

here Is David Desharnais?

David Desharnais had a rough 2013 season, and unfortunately this year hasn't started much better.

The center of Montreal's top line (on paper) had just 28 points in 48 games last season and faced harsh criticism from fans and media alike all offseason.

Desharnais was likely hoping a strong start would silence those who said signing him to a 4-year, $14 million contract in March of 2013 was a mistake.

Things haven't exactly gone as planned.

The 27-year-old Quebec native has yet to register a single point and is a minus-1 through three games this year. He has been largely invisible on the ice and seems to be playing with no desire whatsoever.

Coach Therrien continues to give Desharnais chances—his 16:32 time on ice was the most among Canadiens centers against Calgary. He's going to have to be much better for the remainder of this Western road trip if he wants that to continue.

I would sit this guy for a couple of games, give bournival the spot, it cannot be any worse and may shake the line up...

And how does Therrien give this guy more minutes then eller?

You know it's bad when even some Antichambre guys are saying they need to drop him off that line.

Unfortunately that was only one a few player usage choices that left me scratching my head.

In spite a relatively poor season in comparison to last year, Desharnais still put up a higher goal scoring rate than ever before.

to bad it is not helping the team. any line he is on this year is flat

Despite his claims that he came to camp in great shape and faster on skates than last year, Desharnais is invisible on the ice.
Publicly heckled by Michel Therrien before the start of the Habs Western Canada trip, Desharnais did not react in Calgary.
This weak response is disturbing.
I do not like the Desharnais harsh criticism after four games. It is still too early. But because he has already undermined the patience of fans, and again last year, he can not afford too long a slump.
He should be using the criticism as a springboard, instead of being bogged down in mediocracy, it does not suit him well.
The upcoming games will be determine his fate. But for now, this is the impression that he gives to a lot of his fans. IMHO.
