FirstStar
Just a little info on Dales stats while at home in the Netherlands playing for the Tilburg Trappers during the last NHL lockout. Dale played 19 games during the lockout and amassed 22 goals with 26 helpers for a total of 48 points in 19 games. I think that he wasn't used to his strengths while in Vancouver. Good luck Dale and good luck Canadiens! http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=15727 First off welcome to the forum. 2nd, thanks for the info on Weise. I know nothing of the kid, except for what I've read since the trade. Don't get to see very many western games. As for Diaz, I have no objection to the trade. I really liked Diaz, but when you think about it, we haven't seen much of him. He's spent almost as much time on the IR as on the ice. Even in his first season he played the final few months injured, so that's not a good sample. I believe Diaz possessed offensive skill, we saw flashes at the beginning of his first season, then in PK's absence during his 2nd season. One thing we can agree on is that he's a tad injury prone and hasn't been the same since coming back from concussion. He was a small player on a small team, who missed action due to a concussion. I don't think this season helped his confidence either. Constantly outshot, with the puck in our own zone, which means our dmen and back checkers are face against the glass during the puck battles. To me he hasn't appeared to be the same Diaz who turned heads playing with marky to start the shortened season. I feel some of Diaz' issues are confidence, even on the pp he never appeared confident to me (this season). He gets some slack due to his other point guy being soup. All the best Diaz, hope you regain your confidence and game with the nucks or wherever you end up. Great opportunity for our right handed BG's to get a look or in some cases another look. BigTed3
Logic has nothing to do with it as I'm not passing any judgement on whether it's a good or bad trade. My post is about me not having control over any of this so whether diaz is not playing because he's scratched or not playing because he's not on the team anymore has the same result, he's not playing for the Habs in a game. Part 2 is do I like Weise? Cant tell until i've seen him play. Again, not talking about value to the team and what not, every vet on here should know by now that im allergic to armchair GMing so I dont enter those discussions And from a fan's perspective purely watching this from an entertainment perspective, you're 100% right. As a fan trying to see the logic behind your team's decisions, though, it makes a big difference. On a larger scale, for example, the team as a whole was bad under Cunneyworth, but it was pretty bad because we just didn't have the guns. Our roster had holes, we had key injuries, etc. Under Therrien, the team is also bad, but it's bad because we're not using the parts we have effectively. The end result is the same, and in that respect, I see your point of Diaz vs. no Diaz, but it irks me that we could have had Diaz instead of Murray and that his not dressing was a decision rather than something we were forced into. It doesn't change the on-ice product but it does change my perception of the coach. As for Weise, hopefully some of the posters here are right and he's an untapped potential, but again, that doesn't change the fact Bergevin told everyone he acquired him for size and grit. If MB announces he acquired him because he thinks he can be a 20-30 goal scorer here, then that puts the trade in a whole different light. The way things panned out, it sounds like MB is simply pursuing his size/grit/etc. philosophy and nothing more. Doesn't mean Weise can't have success here, but the reason for acquiring him is misguided.

t_mac_51
Dale Weise wasn't being used well at all under Torts. He won the fastest skater competition for the Canucks two years in a row. He's a solid player, and will surprise a lot of you.Source: I'm a Canucks fan too
kinot-1
I read this from a blog,,,, not sure if it's an accurate description tho. "Think of him as a faster, larger Ryan White who doesn’t take faceoffs, and with a bit more offensive ability and a bit less defensive awareness. Fighting ability is roughly on par with White’s too, for what that’s worth."

Big winger who can hit, decent fighter, has some decent mitts as well: My personal favourite: He doesn't mind screening the goalie on point shots either, so he'll be a pretty decent guy to have. t_mac_51
Looks like he has some soft hands too Yuppers! He was always forced to be that 4th line grinder with the Canucks. He can probably net 10-15ish goals, maybe 20 (if he's very lucky) in a season if he gets good ice time. He's only 25 so he has some potential still. He nearly nettted 30 in the AHL, so the offensive talent is there

Thanks for the warm welcome to your forums. I hope the Habs polish what they have on their roster and maybe add a piece or two to make a long playoff run. With the Diaz trade, Bergevin has freed up about three quarters of a million dollars for future moves before the trade deadline, so hopefully he can make the best use of the cap space and ice a team that goes all the way. Guest habs1952
I suppose the whole thing is a philosophical thing more than a stats thing. I understand the stats thing and for the most part agree with it. I just don't think Murray's bad numbers are solely his fault.
vegasrick
Both teams might have made out OK here. Diaz scored in his first game with Vancouver, and Weise looked rather effective in his first game as a Hab (at least according to the comments and highlights). But I really do think Diaz' potential has not yet been reached in the NHL, and someone is going to do it. At least he went to the Western Conference for the moment. Or maybe the concussion after-effects will take their ominous toll. Whatever. I guess it was in the cards......or in the cabs. In any event, Weise was really the fastest skater out of the Sedins and everyone else? That's impressive. Maybe he'll become a shootout master by getting it past goalies before they know he's within striking distance!
DalesArmy
What really has me doing back flips is Whites line. MT says that he has the confidence to play this line against other teams top lines. That will preserve the top 6 to stay fresher and healthier for a deep play-off run. I am excited to hear this as it puts the Habs in a great position going forward. I can't wait till next game!

During most of the Canadiens' recent successful periods they've had a top-notch checking line, going back to the likes of Bonk and Johnson. We had that at the beginning of this year, too (Prust, Moen, White) before White and Gally got injured and before we starting playing Parros with more regularity. Weise seems like he should be able to slide right in there as another option, which can only be good for the club.

There will certainly be a healthy competition for the energy lines once Gally returns, plus with good young talent able to move up and down the lines looks really good for the entire team. I'm thinking there will be some very good things to come after the Olympic break.
