MONTREAL CANADIENS

UFA in 2014: Brian Gionta, George Parros, Andrei Markov, Francis Bouillon, Douglas Murray.

RFA in 2014: Lars Eller, Dale Weise, Ryan White, P.K. Subban.

Top Prospects:
Nathan Beaulieu, D, Hamilton (AHL)
Jarred Tinordi, D, Hamilton (AHL)
Sven Andrighetto, RW, Hamilton (AHL)
Sebastian Collberg, RW, Frolunda (SEL)
Dalton Thrower, D, Vancouver (WHL)

Others of Interest: David Desharnais, Michael Bournival, Michael McCarron, Christian Thomas, Jacob De La Rose.

No-Trade Clauses: Tomas Plekanec (modified), Brian Gionta, Daniel Briere, Rene Bourque (modified), Travis Moen (modified), Andrei Markov (modified), Josh Gorges (limited).

The Plan: The Canadiens are in playoff position, so they're theoretically in the market to add, rather than subtract, but they're also saddled with the likes of Daniel Briere and Rene Bourque who aren't producing nearly enough to match their contracts.

If the Canadiens are going to make noise this season, though, it may be a result of players like LW Alex Galchenyuk and D Alexei Emelin performing better as they come back from injuries.

Emelin endured a rough start to the year, but was making progress prior to joining Team Russia for the Olympics and Galchenyuk, the second-year forward, has been productive enough, though he could get a few more minutes if the Habs are going to take advantage of his high-end skill.

I'm predicting the habs make a few small deals before the official deadline.

Agreed. I think it will be minor tinkering.

That said, I could see us move guys ilke Bourque, Gionta or even Markov (if we felt like he couldnt be resigned) so this trade line could possibly be a busier-than-usual one although i dont see "blockbusters' happening (for us at least).

Briere is probably our 'most likely to get traded' to be honest. I could see interest being pretty high from the right team.

Why not trade Subban with late pick to Los Angeles for Drew Doughty? Should be fair valve for both?

I would think Doughty is pretty much an untouchable with LA. I don't see them moving him any time soon.

Looking more and more like the Sens will be sellers next week. Bobby Ryan would be an interest to me if they're planning on shopping him. Big man with 22 goals this year and another year left on his contract at 5.1 mill. Probably asking the moon for him though.

Phillips is on the block, but not having a great year, and too old for my liking (35).

I think Subban has a higher ceiling.

I agree with this. I think they're obviously both incredible players, but I think Subban has a little bit more potential to take over a game. he's still a bit more raw than Doughty, so I don't think we can make a true head-to-head comparison just yet, but Subban's stats and advanced numbers are about as good and he's at a younger stage of his career.

Miller and Ott traded to St. Louis. The Sabres will receive goalie Halak, forward Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a first-round draft pick in 2015 and a third-round draft pick in 2016.

First blockbuster of the year. I guess i'll be watching a Price vs Halak dual when i go see the Habs in Buffalo during the March break. I'm up for it.

Reasonable deal for both teams. Short term win for the Blues and maybe long term for the Sabres.

This seems like a great deal for Buffalo... a haul of what amounts to 3 high draft choices, a power forward, and a lesser but still #1 goalie. To me, Stewart is a better player than Ott, and it just seems like Stl gave up a lot to upgrade Halak to Miller. That being said, Stl is clearly making a run this year so maybe that's the trade they need to get better this season and get past the Hawks.

I agree with those who have commented on trying to go after Stewart. He's a player I've been advocating going after for 2-3 years, and I certainly think he can be had for a reasonable price. I believe we can easily match some of the prospects the media has listed as being candidates for Ottawa to send back to Buffalo, although we can't match the two GM's being related and having the inside edge on each other.

I think I just copy the evaluation of another hockey forum I am reading:

I've watched just about every Blues game for the past few years, IMO..

Halak: Has has had trouble adjusting to the lack of shots that comes with our "defense first" style. Sounds kinda weird, but I guess he does better when he is facing 40-50 shots like he did back in Canada. It wasn't that uncommon for us to give up 3 shots in almost an entire period and be down a goal or 2. He has the ability to get hot at any time, but he can also turn into Swiss cheese at any moment. Has a history of weird injuries, and almost lost his starting job many times.

Stewart: Just way too streaky. Kind of like Halak, he can just go crazy and win you a few games in a row. When he doesn't show up he is no where to be found. I don't think I remember hearing his name once during the playoffs last year. At other times during the season, he was our best player.

He has amazing hands and skill. If you check out some of his highlights you will see some amazing backhand goals that come off partial breaks.. I have never seen anyone who can do that move consistently like he can, and when he's playing his best he is one of the top players in the league. If someone could get him fired up every night, he would be amazing. I don't ever see it happening though.

Apparantly if Miller resigns with the Blues Buffalo gets two first rounders. That would be great return if true.

Cry? I couldn't help but laugh at the guy in a $1000 suit sporting a toque on his head.

That's funny that you say that. He's one of the most normal, relatable players in the nhl.

Interesting....

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun believes the Sabres could look to flip Stewart before Wednesday.

I figured that was the plan when I heard what they got in return..I wouldn't be surprised if Halak is traded off as well. Though I think that's just foolish.

I'd be more interested in him than the other forwards available because of his age. He could help us now and later. I recognize there are some question marks, but he only has one more year and it's at 4.15M. That only thing is I'm not really willing to give up too much to get him, so I wouldn't know how to make this trade work. I imagine they would want a 1st and I'm just not sure its worth it. If it was like RB and a 2nd, I'd be all over it. It would be the kind of move that makes everyone happy. Helps us this year and if he does well for the foreseeable future. Stewart, from what I understand, is a really good player who has a tendency to disappear. Playing here might fix that or make it worse, which is why I wouldn't give up more than a second,

From what I hear this draft is not very deep, but the 2015 one is!
