kinot-1
Rogers announces longtime CBC host will join Don Cherry and Ron MacLean for NHL coverage. Stroumboulopoulos will join Hockey Night's Ron MacLean and Don Cherry, along with Sportsnet's Daren Millard and Jeff Marek as the "cornerstones" of the new hockey coverage, Rogers said in a release. George Stroumboulopoulos will become the face of Hockey Night in Canada when Rogers Communications Inc. takes control of Canada's NHL broadcasting rights next season. Stroumbo's as big a Habs fan as there is. Hopefully he'll be able to balance out Cherry a bit, or maybe (wishful thinking here) even challenge him on a point or two. Manatee-X
Now that I've read the story, though, it doesn't seem like they'll be making any changes to the Coach's Corner segment. Oh well, I guess it's back to RDS for me
Manatee-X
I just read the comments on that CBC story and wow... people are really negative about this. The guy's a huge hockey fan and he does an interesting interview - what else do we need in a host? He doesn't have to be a hockey expert; they hire other people for that. I don't think that anyone considers James Duthie to be a top hockey mind, but it doesn't stop him from being the best host in the game (IMO). Then again, half of those posts in the CBC comments seem to be mad because he has an earring or because he's 'too socialist' (which has... what exactly to do with hockey?) so I may just be reading too much into this
kinot-1
I think that he'll be an objective host, and his Habs waving will take a back seat to his hockey sense. I've only caught 1 or 2 of his interviews, but I hear that he does a good job. I wonder if it's their way to get more younger viewers onside? So he has earings,,,so what? so do I. Inquisitive
Kind of a copy-paste from my post in another thread, but I've followed him ever since he was a MuchMusic VJ in my early teens. Terrific personnality, class move by Rogers. It'll help balance the scale a bit between habs and leafs fans.

Guest mrsmarkov
What? This is awesome! I have Stroumbo. Don must love that he's a passionate Habs fan .
Graeme-1
I have no problem with Strombo as host, he's likable, enthusiastic, and energetic. I had no real problem with MacLean (other than being Cherry's whipping boy despite knowing 10x more about hockey than Grapes), but I think getting someone a bit younger, comedic, and more energetic, somewhat like James Duthie, makes sense. He's not going to ask the hardest-hitting or most interesting questions, but he has an interview style that feels like a natural conversation and should fit in well. He's not a sports guy, but he's hosting, not doing play-by-play or color commentary (again think of Duthie's role on TSN, he's not supposed to be the expert), and knows more than enough to get by (and some of the so called "experts" have a surprisingly narrow view of hockey anyways). And a huge Habs fan to boot! Only disappointment with the announcement is Cherry keeps his job and Freidman - by far CBC's and perhaps hockey's best analyst and interviewer - wasn't mentioned (although I imageine he will be at some point in the future). I'm also not too familiar with the two Sportsnet guys.

hatethosebruins
Very happy with this. I always wished I watched his show more often but im bad at watching tv. Hes an interesting interviewer and its a shame he didn't get better ratings. Always tried to get Canadians interested in everything from celebrities to sports to literature to politics. Should be a great add to HNIC.
