2014 Most Popular Hab

Recommended Posts

Now that Habs hockey is done for the season, lets bring back this perennial thread, using the same format as in previous years.

Definition:

When we say most popular, it doesn’t necessarily mean the best hockey player, but rather the player you like best , no matter what your reasons are. Maybe he’s your favorite because he’s the most spectacular, because he gives his all every game, because he’s a good ambassador, because he’s the most productive, because he gives good interviews, because he bleeds red white and blue, even because you think he’s the cutest… don’t be shy to give your reasons with your votes, the goal is to have fun!

So, don’t vote for the one you think will win but vote for the one you like best! There are no wrong answers.

How it works:

The most popular Hab will be the winner of a 1 on 1 tourney type of voting contest. Eligible players are the 16 who will have the most points at the end of this preliminary round (details further down). Players are still eligible even if they are injured.

The matchup brackets will be established according to voting results in preceding rounds.

You can vote and comment as many times as you wish but only your first vote will be compiled.

Rounds will be open from one Saturday to the next in this thread.

Preliminary round:

You need to rank by order of your preference the 28 players (currently on the roster who played games with the Habs in 2014) by writing the rank number beside the player’s name (1 is your favorite, 28 is your least favorite).

The players will get 1 points for 1st rank, 2 points for 2nd rank, etc. The 16 players with the smallest point total will move on to the 1 vs 1 match ups.

Here is the list (in alphabetical order) that you can copy/paste for ease of voting (don't quote this entire post). Don’t be shy to add your comments too.

This looks like fun. Thanks for something else to keep us entertained CRB!

22. Nathan Beaulieu
8. Francis Bouillon - I will never stop loving Franky Boo. I've been watching him play since he was quite young, too much sentimental value for me. It pains me to see that he's not the same player he use to be, but he truly loves being a Hab and is full of heart and passion.
11. Michael Bournival - I really love this kid. I will be the first to admit I thought he was going to be a superstar when I watched him play during the pre-season. It's obvious that's not the case, but he's still great. SPEEDY, SPEEDY, SPEEDY! Love it!
26. Rene Bourque - Thinks he's a superstar. He can be....when he wants to. INCONSISTENT, INCONSISTENT!
16. Daniel Brière - It pains me to have to rank him this low. He was one of my favourites growing up. He's just not the same, I still would like to keep him though.
5. Peter Budaj - Oh gosh, greatest backup in the league. Hardest worker on the team. Team player and stays extra hours after practice. I love his dedication.

2. David Desharnais - What's not to love about Davey? I love that lil guy's heart and speed. Also a great play maker!
20. Lars Eller - I love him on the EGG line!
14. Alexei Emelin - He use to be one of my favourites. He really went downhill. I don't know what to think anymore. I love his hits though. He's on and off for me actually. He fools me into believing he's on his game and then he plays amateurish.
10. Alex Galchenyuk - This kid could be a real superstar if only he was utilized properly. There's nothing I don't like about the kid.
6. Brendan Gallagher - Well I'd like to clone this guy. He works hard every single game no matter what. Great play maker!
21. Brian Gionta - I like his chemistry with Pleky. I can take him or leave him.
18. Josh Gorges - SACRIFICE! Glad we have him.
1. Andrei Markov - Big surprise :P Great silent leader and one of the smartest players in the NHL.
12. Travis Moen - Mad respect for this vet!
28. Douglas Murray
19. Max Pacioretty - He's great, but he could be even better ;).
27. George Parros
13. Tomas Plekanec - I think he's real smart and is a leader in his own right. I love how he chirps other players, it's my favourite :D!
17. Carey Price - Steals us games!!!! People are going to massacre me for ranking him this low . It wasn't my intention I swear :P.
7. Brandon Prust - I love his toughness and energy. At the end of the day he can be such a sweet teddy bear :P.

15. P.K. Subban - He's going to be a super star one day, but he needs to smarten up!
23. Jarred Tinordi
24. Dustin Tokarski
25. Thomas Vanek --- <_< Superstar with no passion...at least not here. One of my favourites during his Sabres days. He was never mentally here.....
4. Mike Weaver - Most down to earth and sweetest guy. He's a real team player and hard worker. One word, SACRIFICE!

3. Dale Weise - Omg, just typing this puts a smile on my face. This guy truly bleeds the colours and is such a ball of energy.
9. Ryan White - I'm so proud of him, he's matured so much over the years. He's really coming along. Wish he could play more.

I tried editing my post because for some weird reason I forgot to comment on Murray and Parros, but it wont let me edit it :P All I have to say is, how on earth is Murray still in the NHL? Parros needs to hang those skates of his, he sure looks scary, but is ridiculously delicate!

In terms of general comments:

Top Six: In the salary cap NHL, having a perfect lineup is pretty close to impossible. Even teams like Pittsburgh and Chicago, which have drafted high and well, have problems up and down their roster. All things considered, despite their inconsistency, I think the top six was excellent compared to the last twenty years of the Montreal Canadiens, and this year's NHL on average.

Bottom Six: Significantly aided by the addition of Dale Weise, average to slightly above average with the exception of George Parros. George is a great guy and I wish him nothing but success and good health, but this last season showed how hard it is to put him in an NHL lineup.

Defence: Outside of P.K. Subban, significantly below average. The problem I have is trying to figure out how much of the blame to put on the players and how much to put on the coaching staff for poor personnel management and strategy. Either way, it wasn't good enough.

Goaltending: I'm willing to listen to arguments that Carey Price isn't a top-3 goalie in the NHL, but I really don't agree. As far as I can see, he's second behind only Tuukka Rask. Outstanding year, despite the missed time. Peter Budaj did an admirable job as a rarely-playing backup before the Olympics and Carey's injury, and wasn't stellar in that emergency starter role. If our defence was a bit better, I don't think it would've been as big of a problem. But unfortunately I don't think he's a solution if we need to play our goalies in a more balanced schedule.

Not a fan of both Murray and Bouillon players; one reminds of soup the other a fridge.

I see one accurate part here .

My only note is that since this is based on popularity, its tough to give a high mark to a guy like Tokarski (who I barely knew anything about a couple of weeks ago) or even a rental like Vanek (who i never really thought would be here long term). Guys low down on my list like Murray, Parros and Boullion do seem like really nice guys but obviously rank lower in importance to this hockey club & therefore lower on my own personal "like list."

It will be interesting to see if we end up with a different final 5 than last year... i think is going to be about the same.

Well last year the winner was Subban and the year before it was Patches. I think the winner will be different this year. Price has a good chance, and I'm really happy about that since he's been my favorite player ever since I became a "real" fan and I voted him #1 all three years IIRC. :D
