Right handed D man.

The talent Analysis on Hockeyfuture.com implies that he is a solid two way defender who is defensively responsible with some offensive upside . Sounds good now please make sure your sports hernia injury is tended too :0

I'm thrilled about this signing, he's probably one for one about equal with Gorges on talent but the ripple effect of moving Emelin back to the right should be huge. Great signing with sensible term and money.

The draft pick we gained in the trade off helps too.

Quotes from his conference call via Habs twitter account:

"He asked me why I was chasing him around" - Tom Gilbert on getting a text from Mike Weaver about a half hour ago.

“Manny touched on it with where he is in his career. I’m looking for what everyone is looking for: a chance to win the Cup.”-Gilbert

"When you visit Montreal and you see the way the fans are excited game in and game out, it makes playing there exciting."-Gilbert

"For me, a lot of it has to do with skating, getting that puck and making that first pass."-Gilbert

The new guy better be worth replacing Gorges  . Will he be prepared to pay the price, and sacrifice body to block shots like Gorges did?

Think of it as Gorges for Gilbert + Weaver + 2nd rounder in 2016

Weaver is a good shot blocker and Gilbert does too, but obviously Gorges is the best at that category. We have upgraded our offense from the blueline and possession as well as getting two rightys for a lefty which we needed. Gorges was the better defensive defenseman, but I'd rather Gilbert and Weaver.

As long as Mr. Gilbert has improved from his days with the Oilers we should be fine. I just want to see it with my own eyes first. Bergevin took a bit of a risk, but is also paying less. The other part of this is that it should allow some kids to play if Gilbert has some rough games so not a bad deal, i am just a little concerned with Carey having to make a couple more saves per game. Then again we may score a few more as Gorges was no offensive dynamo.

I havent watched him enough in the last 2 years but unless he's dropped a lot since his minny/edmonton days, I would actually say he is a better overall dman than Gorges. Gorges imho is a 'decent' #4 (if the top 3 are good) while Gilbert is actually a very good number 4 and arguably a #3 with the right partner.

I don't want to put Josh down too much, but quite a few of those blocked shots are as a result of his inability to clear the zone at times. Was really obvious in the playoffs this year. Hopefully this new guy has a better breakout pass then Josh.

Josh lacked skill. He made up for it with hard work and an ability to toss his body in front of shots. I don't think it was a bad move to look to get out from under Josh's 4 remaining years. Hopefully Gilbert is an upgrade. I don't know much about this guy.

He and Brian Campbell made up a very good first pairing on a horrible Panthers team. Whether he plays with Markov or Emelin he'll complement them very well.

Josh would have served us well for the next couple years. With the style that he plays, his body could get worn down early. We already had him playing over his head the past few seasons. He can't continue to play like that for the rest of his career if he wants it to be a long one. Its nice to have him there blocking shots, but if we have a player who, unlike Josh, can block some shots AND make a nice first pass out of the zone, that only works to our benefit. The best defense is playing in the offensive zone. Blocked shots stats can be misleading, as it often has to do with how much time the player spends in the Dzone. Josh's inability to clear the zone meant he spent a lot of time in there.

I'll always appreciate what Josh did here, but $4M for bloacked shots and leadership. Seems like something the Leafs would do (and they almost did again with Josh).

Gilberts addition gives us a much more balanced D and a better option for our 2nd PP. Both things that will make a big difference.

True dat. :D

Blocked shots are nice when you need to hear someone from the CBC make you feel better about being completely outplayed. It's always nice to know you have players that will put in the effort and block a shot, but it usually speaks to the fact that you are being overwhelmed by your opposition. Part of our problem was an inability to control the puck or move it effectively out of our zone. I am hoping Gilbert helps improve that. I will always appreciate Josh's time with the team, but he should never have received that contract in the first place.
