Still not sure about how I feel about him this early in the season. He's miles better than he was last year but thats not saying much. His positioning has been much better although one-on-one he's been beaten several times.

I think he may be doing a bit better than it seems because his partner (subban) seems to have had his share of brain-cramps so far this year. Hopefully in a few weeks they'll have all the kinks worked out & will be a step better than they have been.

All in all though, a definite improvement from last season... so far.

Really like what I see from him early on. He's still getting blind clears picked off in the neutral zone, but seems to have become more aware. Actually looks for someone to pass to, when last season he simply shot it out of the zone.

Also, he's playing physically again. I don't know if he was reluctant due to lingering memories of the injury, but he hesitated way too much and by that point the carrier was on him. Like I said in another thread, he doesn't possess the defensive tools to be shut guys off with a well timed poke check or foot speed to force them to the outside. He needs to separate the carrier from the puck the only way he knows how, to hit. So far he's been doing it and forwards aren't coming into our zone so freely when he's on the ice. And thankfully, he doesn't take 30+ games to get going (Doug Murray). Murray was actually decent when he warmd up, but it took him so long to warm up. Even a short break like the Olympics was enough to put him back to zero. Emelin's playing like he was before his injury and having success.

He also added passing and awareness to his game, it's making a positive difference.

Keep it up, with the play of weaver and Gilbert so far, we need as much help as possible.

Just glad Emelin is okay. Disappointing that the call was missed on the ice, to say the least.

Yup. And while the Habs played poorly and probably didn't deserve to win, this is one of those calls that's simply inexcusable for the NHL to miss. You have the guy who just played the puck hit late directly to the head and going down... the back ref's job is to follow that play all the way through and he simply missed it. It leads to a goal against instead of a 5-minute PP and ejection, and that could have easily changed the outcome of the game (and probably would have). Again, you can argue the Habs played poorly, but lots of teams win games they don't deserve to win. It's really disappointing that NHL refs can't do their jobs, and in this case, can't even get an obvious, major call correct.

The 4 officials huddled after the play to discuss it. I can't believe the linesman who was 10 feet away didn't speak up.

So... are we all good with Emelin as Subban's defacto partner on the first pairing?

You could also argue them as the second pairing behind Marky and Gilbert.

As it stands, i don't have much of a problem with it. Emelin has elevated his play on his correct side so far. Is it ideal? Probably not.

Absolutely ... it can't be Markov, of there won't be any "strong-Markov" come play-offs. Markov already plays top-2 TOI for PP and for SH; he can't add ES (even-strength) to that. He'll get burnt out. He's not as young as he used to be. He's having a great season, IMO, though.

Therrien's got the pairings right, and even has Tinordi (and Weaver) > Beaulieu right. The pairings will only get better as they continue to gel over the season; it's only 11 games in.

I've found reffing to iffy this season:

  • is it just me, or are they all getting in the way more than ever (shoot-ins, skaters along the boards .... they are more frequently interrupting play).
  • not calling obvious interference, holding, hooking until someone gets upset by the third period and takes a dive (Patches was one example), then they finally call the penalty (plus the dive as well). --- no dive, no original infraction?!? What's that?
  • The two ref system has to invite politics of seniority, etc. I can just see the ref close to things (like the Burrows hit on Emelin) being some upset at the ref at teh other end of the ice making the call and showing him up (it doesn't matter that the ref far away had the better view -- us TV viewers don't know that). It seems to be problematic, to me.
  • The subconcious even-up that continues to drive reffing in the NHL .... Canucks had got a number of penalties already,s so 3rd and OT was the Habs turn What ?!?? Penalties should be like goals .... you earn them. Let the chips fall where they may.

The thing that irks me, is that in the previous game, no one really saw the knee on knee hit when tinordi and stajan collided. It wasn't until stajan laid on the ice holding his knee, that the arm went up.

And the stupidest thing was that tinordi had just played the puck, so stajan was technically laying a hit on tinordi. Sure tinordi's knee was out, but think that was more of a reaction, bracing for the hit. If tinordi got a penalty for that, then lucic should've gotten one when Emelin hurt himself when he checked lucic. As Emelin hit lucic, lucic brought up his knee to brace for the hit, unfortunately Emelin got the worst of it, just like stajan did when he tried to lay a hit on tinordi.

So if the refs calle tinordi in the previous game, after seeing the result of the collision. Why didn't they at the very least, call an interference penalty when they saw Emelin on the ice, right in front of the linesman.

Thought the officiating on the western road trip was very questionable. What was called in one game, wasn't called in the others.

Yes, we did commit the infractions, but while on the PK a, Emelin had his stick slashed out of his hand and the play continued until the flames (nucks?) scored on the PP. Chuck was also dangerously boarded behind the flames net. He was carrying the puck, so can't use the excuse the refs didn't see it, what else would they be looking at if they weren't following the puck carrier?

Didn't get many calls against us against the nucks, 1or 2 penalties the whole game I believe, but the nucks also got away with a lot.

Considering the calls and non-calls against us, we were lucky to escape the west with 3 points.

The infuriating thing about the nucks game was OT ... we get called for offensive zone interferance. Ok, to the 4-3 ... where the nucks commit blatant interference picks that go uncalled and lead to the winning goal.

In last nights debacle ... we had 1 PP to their 6. Most of our penalties were in penalties, with 1-2 being 'borderline'. The flames however could commit no wrong in the eyes of the zebras and were allowed to do whatever they chose ... the laughable one was Emelin in the foot race gets called on a questionable hook/interference call that was borderline at best ... and they ignore the fact the Calgary player drove his elbow back into Emelin's face on the same play.

4.1.million for another three years and paired with Mike Weaver... hmmm... with the acquisition of Gonchar, Tinordi and Beaulieu available (not to mention one of Nygren or Pateryn both right-handers) and Markov a fixture, the Habs now have 5 lefties. Alexei could be a desired trade chip for other teams... could he be on the market?

When his physical presence is felt on the ice, he becomes a big part of our defense. I'm not in a hurry to see him get traded, really. I thought he had a great game against Boston tonight.

I agree, I wouldn't hate moving him for a major piece but his physical presence is not easily replaceable. I wish he was more consistent but sometimes you just gotta take what you can get and be happy with it

Going to have hearing for hit on Gionta last night. I think any contact to the head was a byproduct of Gionta spinning around and their size difference. I'm not opposed to a 1 or 2 game suspension just because it is nonetheless a hit to the head, and we need to everything we can to get those out of the game.

I haven't seen it specified if it would a phone or in-person hearing. If he gets anything more than 2 games I think that would be ridiculous
