uncivilengineer
According to this CBC article, advertisements on jerseys are coming. I know this has probably been discussed in the past, but I think this is ridiculous. Many jerseys have a lot of heritage that will just be ruined with adding corporate logos. What's next? Sticking LED billboards in helmets with messages that change each commercial break? http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/nhl-jersey-ads-coming-says-league-exec-1.2826466 http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2014/11/06/SMT-Conference/John-Collins.aspx
FirstStar
I wish they wouldn't push this, it's the one thing that separates the NHL a from the other leagues. Some of those Euro leagues have no choice to sell space on jerseys just to stay afloat. That isn't the case with the NHL. If bettman can give himself a 10+ mil salary per season, it's making enough money to survive without resorting to butcher some of the nicest uniforms in professional sports. kinot-1
Ads generate revenue, Bettman likes revenue.
Guest
As long as they keep it to one or two small shoulder patches, i can live with it. Anything more would be brutally ugly IMO. I would prefer none at all, but i doubt the fans will get any input into the decision. I suppose they could protest by refusing to buy jerseys, but i doubt that provides any results. Would the NHL be so crass as to sell jerseys to fans with the ad patches on them? Probably!
habs_93
Disgraceful. The only teams whose jerseys should have ads on them aren't worth putting ads on.
Guest
Would the NHL be so crass as to sell jerseys to fans with the ad patches on them? Probably! Unlikely. The only ones sold with ads would be the secondary market of game worn jerseys.
kinot-1
I know it's coming, IMO, that's a given, it's just a matter of when. I wonder tho if a team could "opt out" of the ads. Let's say for instance, that the Habs opted out, so that they retained their jerseys etc. just like they are today. Would fans of other teams trade in their devotion to their ad decorated team, to become a fan of the Habs because of our/their lack of ads? To put it another way, if the Habs had their jerseys decorated with ads,,,, would anyone here switch allegiances to become a fan of the Canucks or another team, (leaving out of course the laffs, ruins, or the sens) if they didn't have ads? Would all teams be forced to wear ads? I know these questions will be answered down the road, but, what the heck,,, it's a discussion.

I imagine a major sponsor's ad/logo would likely be on all jerseys. I can't see the NHL allowing individual teams to make their own deals. They (NHL) most likely would have final say on what goes where.

IMO, fans don't mind change,,, as long as they can see "some" benefit to them. I can see exactly no benefit to the fans on this one.
Manatee-X
If they do go for ads, I hope that they at least use some of the suggestions here: http://www.habseyesontheprize.com/2014/11/7/7171661/nhl-jersey-ads-sponsors-coming-how-bad-could-it-be-bad-jersey-mock-ups-hockey#4336350 Buffalo's "ProSportsTours.ca" and Columbus' "LA Kings" had me laughing, but I don't think either can beat Boston's sponsorship from the department of player safety
Guest habs1952
Just how much money does the league think poor teams like Florida are going to generate from ads on jerseys? Heck, nobody watches them now and I don't think people are gonna flock to the rink to read jersey ads.

Heck, nobody watches them now and I don't think people are gonna flock to the rink to read jersey ads. What could these deals possibly make the NHL? $2, maybe $3 million per team per year? Is the NHL in such poor fiscal health that such a paltry amount is worth desecrating the uniforms of institutional teams? If they just got rid of the Panthers and the Coyotes, two teams who lose $25 to $30 million per year, they'd make up the difference. Move them to real markets and they'd make more. The NHL just keeps getting lower and lower.
