Season series: The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Dec. 16. Canadiens center Alex Galchenyuk scored three goals and left wing Max Pacioretty assisted on all three. Canadiens goalie Carey Price, who has an 11-5-2 career record against Carolina, made 25 saves for the win. Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban finished with a plus-4 rating without earning a point.

Canadiens team scope: Defenseman Bryan Allen, who has missed the past six games with an illness, returned to practice, according to the Canadiens official website. Coach Michel Therrien said Price would start in goal and that goalie Dustin Tokarski, who was recalled from Hamilton of the American Hockey League on Dec. 21, would start one of the games during Montreal’s four-game road trip. Montreal has won five of its past six games. The Canadiens are 4-for-17 on the power play in their past five games. Galchenyuk has points in four consecutive games (four goals, three assists). Center David Desharnais has three goals and two assists in his past five games. Pacioretty has five assists in his past four games and has one goal in his past nine games.

Hurricanes team scope: The Raleigh News & Observer reported that coach Bill Peters expects center Jordan Staal, who had 15 goals and 25 assists in 82 games last season, will make his season debut on Monday. Staal sustained a broken leg during the preseason. Peters also expects forward Jiri Tlusty (upper body) to return to the lineup after missing the past seven games. Right wing Alexander Semin (upper body) has missed the past two games and is listed as day-to-day. Captain Eric Staal has not scored in his past six games and has one goal in his past 16.
