Myers is interesting. A 6'8", 220lb Dman who has won the Calder as the league's best rookie. He hasn't been playing up to hype in Buffalo, but I think he would be capable of more if he were to play elsewhere. Perhaps his recent struggles could force BUF to retain a bit of his 5.5M salary or lower the asking price for him.

I haven't actually watched a lot of Myers y any means. If he is your typical big pylon Dman, then I have no interest. But assuming he can skate relatively well for a man his size, then I'm all for it.

He can skate, for sure. He's big but doesnt use his size a lot - in some ways very similar to Gilbert (better hockey sense). He's prone to mistakes too, so Im not sure if he'd survive the boo birds in MTL.

I think he's a solid #3 (and a top 4 of Subban - Markov Myers - Beaulieu would be awesome) but that contract is just way too much for someone to play that far down the roster imho.

we need scoring. we have the best goalie in the league and the combo of him and our average defence has us with the least goals against in the nhl. we have issues scoring and it has been this way for a couple of seasons. a good young scoring winger with size is what we need. we are deep at center and d so make a deal already.

A sniper to be precise. A la a Stamkos or Tavares.

Pacioretty may be our top scorer but his conversion rate is not impressive. We need a consistent sniper to convert on breakaways and 1-on-1 situations with a goalie while speed skating.

But it's never gonna happen this season .

Why, cos MB won't shell out the pennies. Saving cap space to renew contracts. Oh, and the top guys won't come to Montreal to play.

It's very hard to get one of these players. They're usually not available via trade. Only ones who may be available are Hall and Kane if you consider him one of these players. There's very little in terms of free agents this summer. Best way to get these guys is through drafting. Galchenyuk could become our guy as well.

I would like for MB to make a trade to add to our core, rather than give up picks/prospects for a short-term rental. There are definitely some guys available who could add to our core long term.Through FA, I'd be eyeing top 9 guys like Tlusty, Fleischmann, Peverly, Stewart and 4th line centers like Goc, Horcoff, Brodziak,

The D I would have interest in through trade or if they hit FA are Green, Beauchemin, Martin, Ehrhoff, Franson, Boychuk, Jackman, Methot.

Bingo. There are really only 3 ways to get an elite player:

1) Draft. This obviously is the main way to get one. Usually you need to be bad enough to draft in the top 5 but there have been exceptions (Subban, Getzlaf etc) our track record has been pretty good lately.

2) Trade when they are still prospects. This is a supremely risky move. It usually means giving up a bonefide young-ish player for 'potential' - Sam Reinhart for example. 9 NHL games 1 point. Has proven nothing at the NHL level (yet) sent back to junior. My guess is that Buffalo wouldnt be interested in fielding calls but you never know. They might accept a deal like Gallagher + Beaulieu for him. Two young, proven NHL caliber players (both of whom could be impact players) for 1 guy who is only "potential" at this point. Its a super risky deal which is why it very rarely happens. past examples; Iginla for Neiwendyk, McDonaugh for Gomez etc.

3) Trade the farm for someone still in their prime. This doesnt happen often but when it has (Joe Thornton) its also usually very risky. We have such a balanced team right now Id be worried about making a move like this.

Taylor Hall seems to be having quite a few knee injuries this year.

Yeah. He's uber talented but throws his body at everything. Some guys (Gallagher, Fleury, Gionta) bodies can handle that, but most cannot. I think he's going to be having more injuries as time goes on & that concerns me considering what we'd likely have to give up to get him.

Id be interested in Yakupov if the price wasnt exorbitant (I think it will be) but to me the one guy id pay big for in edmonton is RNH. That said, i think RNH is basically their only untouchable. he's their only top 9 caliber centre. If you were to acquire him, you'd have to send them back 2 top 6 centres, whereas some of the other guys (wingers) maybe could be had for 1 centre.

Tell me about it. And he`s on my fantasy team

I`d imagine if they get McDavid, their phone will be ringing off the hok with teams inquiring about RNH.

I`d sooner focus ona winger since we have Galchenyuk. But I`d certainly be open to adding a guy like RNH. Worst case we just leave Chucky on the wing and still have our elite center. But thats reaching.

The Price for Franson?

According to Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a second-round pick in exchange for defenceman Cody Franson.

Franson, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, has six goals and 23 assists in 49 games with the Leafs this season.

Franson will turn 27 this August.

From SN,,, 2 days ago:

"According to Elliotte Friedman, Franson and the Maple Leafs have been unable to come to terms on a multi-year deal worth $4.6 million annually. Friedman was hesitant to say Franson ‘rejected’ an offer, but noted that $4.6 million per year does not appear to be a number that’s going to get it done for the Maple Leafs."

6'5,, 213#. 140 hits,,,96 BLKS, 4G, 10A on the PP. Highest PT total was last year,,, 33 Pts., which he should surpass this year.

Rental, or long term? Hmmmmm. I guess it depends how much comes off the books in June, and next years cap. If you're going to give up a 2nd rounder,,,, it should be for long term.

Wow. A second round pick for Franson would be great. MB went after him once, so maybe he does it again. And Perhaps that previous interest can help to entice him to re-sign. If we can unload Emelin and re-sign Cody in the off season, we have a damn good D corpse in Subban, Markov, Franson, Beaulieu, Gilbert and Tinordi.

While I think we could use an upgrade on defense, we have a hole to fill on offense. I would rather fill the hole first.

With the way Therrien coaches, a change on defense is going to have a minimal impact. We will end up relying on Price still. I feel the best thing we can do for Price, is give him some goal support so he doesn't have to be near perfect every game and gets to play with a lead every now and then.

Not accounting for games played, we currently have less goals than every team currently seeded in the playoffs. Defense may win championships, but you still need to score to win games. ;)

Long term defensive upgrades that make sense, sure. But if we are going the mercenary route, a scoring forward (RW?) makes more sense. In a perfect world, we could avoid rentals completely and do something impactful for longer term.

The question is: Will any second rounder do the trick or are they looking for a pick in the 30th to 40th range?

So, Vermette's face-off prowess. :o He'd be a waaaaaaaaay better option than Malhotra at center!

Are you suggesting that we should go after him to play on our 4th line?

3.75mil is an awful lot for a 4th line center. Not to mention the top end prospect and high pick Arizona is reportedly asking for him.

I think he's just trying to find some way to get Manny out of the line up :)

I think the closest MB is going to get to making a "Vanek deal" would be to make a pitch for Jaromir Jagr...I'd offer this:

To NJ: Sven Andrighetto, 2nd rnd 2015

To MTL: Jaromir Jagr

If it takes more the highest I'd go is adding Hayden Hawkley to the deal.

Id much rather keep Andrighetto than take on Jagr as a rental. Andrighetto is probably one of our top 5 prospects not playing in the NHL right now.

Honestly, i cant see him commanding much more than a 2nd rounder but if we need to sweeten the pot there are other guys Ellis, Thrower, Crisp or something.

with you on that in both senses

i think a 2nd can get it done and i dont want to part with andrighetto. if they needed another prospect we have plenty of fringe guys

I really don't think Kane would be a good fit. He seems to lack the 'character' that MB looks highly upon. Granted, he has played through numerous injuries and that's admirable but there seems to be a little too much 'holier than thou' coming from him.

This is the guy that tweeted a picture of himself with stacks of money during a lock out; not the soundest of judgement and he rightfully received a lot of criticism for it.

I think there is less room in hockey than most other sports for a prima donna. I can't help but think his problems with coaches & teammates will just follow him to his next destination.

I say pass.

I see what you did there... :D

In other news, TSN reports that Jagr could be a fit in montreal. Or maybe not. Or maybe they did. Or maybe they didnt. Im not really sure what they are trying to say here.

Could the Montreal Canadiens be a player for Jaromir Jagr?

The fifth-highest scorer in NHL history may be available prior to the deadline, but has cautioned that any team interested in him should be sure he wants to make a move. So, would Montreal be a desirable destination for the veteran Czech?

Jagr’s agent – and former Habs defenceman - Petr Svoboda spoke to The Morning Show on TSN Montreal 690 Friday about his 42-year-old client had designs on joining the Habs in the past.

“When he came back from the KHL his dream was to play [in Montreal] but obviously the organization was going in a different direction with the younger guys and everything else,” Svoboda said.

“He’s happy as a Devil right now, but he did try to come to Montreal.”

So according to that, he might be a good fit, or he might not. he wanted to play in montreal, but now he's happy - but he did dream of it, but now he's a devel so who knows what the heck they are saying.
