Trade deadline - March 2nd

So,,, laffs get a 36 year old with 3G, 3A, , a small center who's never played an NHL game,, and a high pick. IMO, Nonis was sleeping, or the laffs are going for McDavid.

To be fair, Leipsic was a prolific producer in the WHL. He has 35 points in 47 games in the AHL this season.

That does represent a fairly significant drop-off in production, symptomatic of playing against some larger opponents. He'll likely experience another drop-off at the NHL level, but probably not as large. Not a bad exchange for Santorelli, but I feel they would have been better off with a pick or depth prospect. Leipsic may pan out, but the odds are always against a smaller player.

I would say Jokinen was a salary dump. The Leafs did gain some cap space which might enable them some flexibility however.

So the real trade is a back-end 1st rounder for Franson. Considering the rumored price of a 2nd rounder, that may have seemed like a win for Nonis.

All things considered, the Leafs' lack of patience probably prevented them from maximizing their return.

Clear win for Nashville in this trade, adding two rentals, at least 1 of which will likely re-sign, while dumping an unproductive veteran.

This also allowed them to upgrade their roster 2 weeks prior to their competition and waive Stalberg.

Wow, if Kings can't make the playoffs this season, Predators are clearly the odds-on favourite for the Cup.

With elite goalie, now a tough D-man and possibly a revitalized forward in better environment (and better roster). Look at how they're holding off Chicago and St Louis in the toughest division.

So, how far do you think the Habs will go?

Basically, the Preds will have to move 2 bodies to accommodate Franson and Santorelli.

They dumped Olli Jokinen and placed Victor Stalberg on waivers, and Ellis is injured on D... so they don't need to make any moves at all.

With Methot now re-signed in Ottawa, the number of rental D men is dropping, and I'm not really sure there's anyone out there as a rental from a non-playoff team who would be a major improvement to our D (they'd have to be a step up on Gilbert, Beaulieu, or Emelin to make it into the line-up...). I think wing has to be the position MB tries to upgrade first...

i agree, but i also think that if we used our current defensmen effectively, we may not even need an upgrade on d. Subban, Markov, Beaulieu, are clearly top 3 material and betwen Gonchar (assuming he wont be out too long) and GIlbert we probably are ok for a #4. That leaves totally capable bodies for our 3rd pairing - again - as long as MT uses them effectively (good matchups, the right ice time etc).

On wing, it looks as if we definitely need an upgrade - although im not sure who's out there that we can afford (ie not overpay for) and will actually be an improvement on our top 4 wingers.

If we agree that Pacioretty, Galchenyuk and Gallagher are all on our top 2 lines that only leaves 1 spot in our top 4 wingers. Would any players out there and available today be a better option than Sekac? What if we simply moved him to one of the top 2 right wing slots? Then, maybe we need an upgrade on line 3 (there are some decent 2 way wingers available) although even then you have guys like PAP and Bournival available as your 3rd line wingers.

To me a far better deadline deal acquisition would be a new coach - or finding a way to get this one to be more objective about his players' abilities.

There's a rumbling amongst montreal media that seems to be: expect a "hockey trade" in the next week or so. We shall see how that plays out.

I've been hearing that MB doesn't want a rental, but failing to get a guy long-term, would Jagr or Iginla be a fit for a rental ( heck, why not both?)? We need scoring now, and we'll certainly need scoring in the POs.

That is all,,, carry on. B)

Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune tweeted that Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin was listed on the seating chart for the game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins, while Los Angeles Times sports columnist Helene Elliott tweeted a much more robust list of the attendees for Sunday's matchup between the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals.

Toronto GM Dave Nonis told reporters Sunday he expects teams to inquire about the 36-year-old Jokinen prior to the March 2 NHL trade deadline.

Me thinks the only person calling for Jokinen will be his wife, reminding him to bring home milk.

Can't imagine any of those teams making a deal with us.

FWIW,,,from the Bleacher Report:

According to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman, the Los Angeles Kings have already expressed interest in the Leafs captain and the defence-needy Detroit Red Wings could show some interest as well.
Jagr would be an asset for a team's power play, and adding another veteran presence with plenty of postseason experience would be a benefit for most teams. One would think Jagr doesn't have many seasons left in the tank—though he's defied Father Time to this point—and would jump at the chance to play for a contending organization.
Don't be surprised if he's moved.

Panthers might (or the flames if they think they can come back and make the post season) everywhere else OJ has had bad numbers but those 2 teams seem to bring out the best in him for whatever reason.

FWIW,,,Eklund

"Just speculation...Then today I heard Montreal has serious interest in Yandle...They were also in on Franson and to a lesser extent Myers...Montreal, for a team built on strong chemistry, a team having much success, is being very aggressive heading into the deadline."

Jeff Petry?

From Hockey Buzz:

Edmonton is having a hard time getting near market value for Petry....whatever you might call market value.. It sounds like the best offers are around a third rounder...which may be fair. So far...Detroit and Tampa are the most likely...Montreal...possible

Jokinen has made enough money to have a cow in the house so he doesn't have to bring milk home.

1. Yes, the best move MB could make to upgrade his team would be to fire his current coach. You upgrade your roster significantly by hiring someone who uses the players we have in roles that get more out of them. That means not press-boxing Sekac, not using Malhotra, not playing Weise and Prust in the top 9, not ignoring Eller's offensive skill and abilities as a center iceman, not shuffling multiple players' linemates AND positions throughout the year so they can't build up chemistry, and so on... MT continues to make error after error and get away with it, and this team's performance remains far below its potential. yet that fact is lost upon many, simply because Carey Price and Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban and our shoot-out specialists have bailed out the squad with heroic performances on many a night.

2. Despite having Markov, Subban, Beaulieu, and Gonchar, I wouldn't be comfortable going into the playoffs with that as my top 4. I don't want to see Beaulieu bumped from the starting 6, but I would like to see some insurance against his lack of experience as well as the fact we're leaning on a lot of guys on the wrong side of 30. Come playoff time, that may well catch up to us. The problem is that the guys who remain available on the market don't seem to me to be an upgrade. Petry, to my eye, is basically no better or worse than Tom Gilbert, and he's the name we've heard of the most. Bogosian would have been a guy who could have helped. Myers perhaps to a lesser degree. Both those guys are possibly off the market now. Yandle would be an interesting pick-up, but he's not a rental. Green is a player I have no interest in. Neither is Michalek. So the bottom line is that yes, we need an upgrade but no, I don't see a good fit out there in terms of names being thrown around by the media. Unless MB can pull off a surprise, adding another bottom pairing guy is not a priority to me.

3. On wing, we have definite needs. Here is where a rental like Jagr or Iginla or someone of that ilk could make sense. That being said, I think the better trade is for MB to go after someone who can help us past this year. We made a splash with the Vanek trade last season, but we can't afford to be dealing away a top prospect or pick every year unless we do something to make it worth taking that risk, and I don't have enough faith in MT to wager on him right now. So unless there's a new coach/system that shows me we are a legitimate contender that won't be run out of the playoffs if we lose Carey again, I don't know that this is an all-in situation for MB in terms of a rental. If you can pull Jagr out for a 3rd rounder, I'm all for it. If getting someone is too costly, we're better off looking for a hockey trade. In that respect, we may well find a willing partner in Chicago or Pittsburgh or LA or so on. Some of the better teams will be up tight against the cap next year and may be happy to deal us a better player for an established young veteran with a better cap hit (think Eller, Gallagher, Emelin, Desharnais, or so on).
