Trade deadline - March 2nd

MB has been talking in a few Marlies games lately. Combine that wit the rumour that the Leafs have interest in Thomas and Bournival, and there has been some speculation that we could see a prospect for prospect trade.

It`s not the exciting deadline acquisition that we want, but it could happen. Something for Thomas for Connor Brown or Josh Leivo.

So, how far do you think the Habs will go?

I'll wait for the mods to publish a poll when the playoffs begin, and you'll see B) . Right now, it's too early to play the fool. But I still expect a Habs-Detroit first rounder.

A less precise answer would be to expect an anticlimax in the playoffs. Because I subscribe to the theory of alternating fortunes for the Habs. When they go into the playoffs after a [edit] previous season and everybody dismisses them, they'll surprise everybody by progressing above expectations (that's last season after being eliminated by Senators against expectations). If they enter the playoffs as favourites (except against Boston), then the reverse is true.

The best playoff scenario this season is to face the Bruins as top Eastern seed, in order to take advantage of their weakest form in years. But my sense is Tampa will usurp that privilege from Habs when the regular season ends. Lets see.

I know this is old trade stuff but stumbled upon this on twitter today. I am so glad this never happened... I don't even want to think of where we would be

Tampa Bay trades Vincent Lecavalier to the Montreal Canadiens for … well, everyone

"Remember what we said earlier about having a grain of salt handy? You may need the entire salt mine for this one, because it gets so ridiculous that it can’t possibly be true. But the source for at least one version of this rumor is a guy who’d probably know what he was talking about: the GM of one of the teams involved.

First, the background. Being a French Canadian star, Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier had been rumored as a Canadiens trade target virtually since he entered the league. But in 2008, the two teams got serious about making a deal. Lecavalier was months away from needing an extension, and there was talk that he’d be looking to break the bank. Tampa Bay couldn’t necessarily afford that, although big-market Montreal could.

One widely reported rumor had the teams discussing a deal in which the Habs would acquire Lecavalier for Tomas Plekanec, Chris Higgins, Josh Gorges, and a prospect. That sounds like a high price in hindsight — Plekanec ended up developing into a very good two-way center — but not completely unreasonable. That is, until you hear the name of the prospect: P.K. Subban, who of course went on to win a Norris and establish himself as one of the league’s most exciting players.

If that sounds crazy, wait until you hear the sequel. According to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek, Lightning GM Brian Lawton claims he almost landed an even bigger package: Carey Price, Max Pacioretty, a first-round pick, and either Subban or Ryan McDonagh.

I’ll pause here while you read those names again.

That’s utter madness, and it’s tempting to suggest that Lawton must be misremembering, or possibly making things up to make himself look good. It’s also tempting to silence that doubt, because the idea of this being a real trade that was almost consummated is just too entertaining not to buy into.4

The players mentioned in the various iterations of this rumor formed the core of the Montreal revival of the last several years, including two trips to the conference finals and this year’s Presidents’ Trophy candidate. As for Lecavalier, he ended up re-signing in Tampa Bay to a massive 11-year, $85 million deal that the team bought out just four years later. He’s now with the Flyers, where he is, uh, not good.

There are varying stories as to why some variation of Lecavalier-to-Montreal-for-everyone never happened. Some say Lightning ownership got cold feet and shot the idea down, while others suggest that Lecavalier himself didn’t want to play in the pressure cooker of Montreal. And of course, it’s absolutely possible that the deal never happened because it never existed in the first place, or at least in any form that was ever remotely close to getting done.

But man, what if it did? The Lightning could have had one hell of a youth hockey reunion on their hands."

Just a thought here, but, before I tell you, sit down,, take a deep breath, a pill, or oxygen.

We need a scoring right winger. We need a player that can contribute on the PP. OK,,, who's available? Enter Phil Kessel. (Please don't upchuck on your keyboard, thank you).

Here's why:

Trawnna wants him gone, he wants to go.

He scores goals,,,,,21 as of today, despite playing for the laffs.

He scores on the PP. 7 PPG, 19 PPP.

He's got a wicked wrister.

27 years old.

He wouldn't have to be the face of the team in Montreal, we have 4,5,6 guys who can talk to the media.

I can't see any other team wanting to move their top RW scorer.

Cap hit per year,,,8 mil. for 6 more years ( come Oct.).

OK,, what would he cost? IMO, he would cost more than say, a western team would send the other way. Yes, he would be expensive, my guess,,, Emelin,, Eller,,, a decent prospect and a 2nd, and maybe another piece or pick.

Well I don't think u need to jump towns and change your name. I think your just bringing up something all of us or most of us have considered. Have a sniper on the rw of kessels caliber would be huge for any team needing more offence. I'm just worried we would need to give up a lot for him. Probably more then u suggested and making a block buster with a rival like trawanna is dangerous. I'm sure mb is kicking tires. But I'm not overly interested if we need to give up some of our top prospects like I think trwanna will want.

I wonder about our capacity to take on that much salary though?

Does Kessel have any sort of clause in his contract that allows him to determine where he can be traded? I believe he has a list of 8 teams that he would accept a trade to. After playing with Toronto, I somehow doubt he would have Montreal on his list of prime destinations because of very similar spotlight considerations. I think it's more likely Phil ends up somewhere warm, and where less scrutiny will be heaped on him each time his team loses. In Montreal, he wouldn't be the face of the franchise (that's P.K., Max, and Carey), but he would have to accept becoming the highest paid forward on the team... And that would come with a major responsibility. Especially so, when Max is scoring more than Kessel, and for much less cash.

I don't see Kessel as a likely target for Bergevin. The logistics of Phil's restrictive trade clause would be a major hindrance to even beginning conversations about a deal between Montreal and Toronto.

If we're talking Toronto, I think the obvious choice is Daniel Winnik. He has 6 goals and 17 assists from 55 games. He would represent a low risk acquisition, and his contract expires after this season. We would be on the hook for whatever percentage of the $1.3 million he's still owed after acquisition. However, I would note that he is sitting at only 48.9% in the circle and would fill a role we probably already have filled. That of a bottom six center.

Every time I see Ryan McDonaugh and Wince, I remind myself of this (and a few other trades) that didnt happen & am thankful that we only lost McD at the time.

There's no question that on talent alone, Phil Kessel should (and would) be welcomed on any team in the league. He is a premiere scorer. Even on bad teams, with bad teammates and during bad circumstances he has managed to consistently be a top 10 scorer. With a good supporting cast, a good team and a good attitude you have to wonder what the limit is for this guy. Interestingly some guys (PK) seem to have a bond with him already so I think there's a possibility he becomes an even better player if he ended up on our team.

That said there are 3 concerns for me:

1) First and foremost: The Cost to get him. Toronto is not giving up unquestionably their most talented player for peanuts. I dont care how low his value may be right now, they will be wanting a blue chip prospect (Beaulieu?) a young established player (Gallagher? Eller?) and more. (1st? another roster player? Another prospect?) With our depth, im not sure this deal decimates our roster but it would definitely reshape things. Obviously if MB could use some sort of Jedi Mind Trick and get Kessel for DD, Emelin and Nygren or something, id be all over it, but i dont see that happening.
2) His salary. His contract is not bad at all - its good value for his points - BUT - does it throw our other contracts out of whack? Right now we have a defined hierarchy and as long as kessel remains a PPG player that 8m falls within it, but if he slows at all, it would creat problems.
3) His "attitude." It needs to be mentioned because, lets face it, 2 teams have basically given up on a ridiculously talented player because of it. It (his attitude) has probably been blown out of proportion and as we've seen time and again in the NHL, get a guy on a winning team and watch how much better he looks in the room. Its a concern but not a deal breaker to me.
If i were MB i would definitely kick tires on Phil Kessel - even if, i didnt see him in my long term plans. Here's why: 1) his skills are obviously welcome on our squad. You have to think (assuming we dont give up too much) that he would make us better. Even if attitude is an issue, coming to a contender, this close to the post season would create a hugely positive spin & I could see him being a monster player from now till we stop playing for the season. 2) A great GM buys low - no matter what it is. Phil Kessel is young, he's extremely talented and he comes with a reasonable contract for that skillset. If we could aquire him for a little right now - and say he performed as well or better for us - if you dont see him in your future you turn around and trade him when his value is high.

It will be very interesting to see what happens. My guess is, he remains in Toronto, but you never know.

I don't think anyone hasn't thought about Kessel, it's just hard to get past the idea of helping Toronto, even if it helps us.

Kessel is worth pursuing and his contract is more or less fair. Fears over his physique, attitude, floating, etc., may or may not be valid. I would definitely use those issues, real or not, as bargaining points.

Toronto will want young core players, quality prospects, and picks.

Eller would definitely be involved

Allen, Gonchar, or Parenteau would have to go to account for some salary (Emelin is not going to go to Toronto)

Thomas could be included with Toronto presumably being interested

In order to avoid losing a top prospect, I'd sell them on Bournival and Pateryn or Nygren (for example)

It's more or less assumed you get a 1st round pick when trading a top player

To Toronto:

Eller

Thomas

Bournival

Nygren

1st 2015

3rd 2016

Allen

To Montreal:

Kessel

Winnik

IF (and that's a big if) a deal for Kessel were possible, I don't think you've offered enough quality in your proposal. I'm not sure a quantity deal is going to work. The 1st round draft pick is a good place to start, but Eller is largely unproven as a top-six forward. Allen and Nygren provide no value what-so-ever to the deal, and I cannot see Toronto being interested in those depth players. If anything we would have to include more depth at the forward position to offset the losses of Kessel and Winnik. Thomas and Bournival might be of interest to Toronto.

Purely fantasy speculation here...

To MTL:

Phil Kessel

Daniel Winnik

To TOR:

1st round draft choice (2015)

Jiri Sekac (or) Lars Eller

Michael Bournival

Nikita Scherbak

Magnus Nygren (sure... as a throw-in)

Kessel, IMO, is the best definition of 'risk-reward'.

Should MN try and succeed at landing him, one of two things will happen:

a - it'll pan out, Kessel will rediscover his scoring ways, fit into the room, and help take us to the Promised land;

or b - Kessel will continue to display the same temperament that's landed him in the hot seat since for most of his career.

If 'b', it'll be tough to unload him. We'd be his third team with no change in visible attitude or commitment. After that, I don't see as many teams willing to roll the dice.

If 'a', though, ... if 'a', ... I shudder to think of it.

It's a lot like the decision Mayor Lenny had to make in Ghostbusters (1984):

I don't think Kessel has a negative attitude per se. I believe he just really shies away from the media scrutiny and doesn't know how to handle it. Sometimes he honestly comes off as someone suffering depression from the constant attention/scrutiny. He probably feels immensely weighed down by the expectations playing in Toronto, on such a terrible team.

Oh yeah for sure. It wasnt a proposal per se - it was just a starting point. I think Toronto would either want 2 or 3 established quality forwards, or a package like you're suggesting. Im not sure if we can (or would want to) do it, but i agree, it would have to be fairly significant.

On other fronts, Apparently Sean Bergenheim has asked for a trade. He's a streaky winger but very strong defensively. If Florida was interested (and he was healthy before the deadline) I would offer PAP straight up for Bergenheim. I think its a fairly even trade but fits into our plans better as a line like Sekac - Eller - Bergenheim would be a very hard one for opposing offensive lines to play against.

Well, let me get off the Kessel talk. Bergeron has made many trades and opened up breathable future cap space to sign guys like Chucky and such in the future. So, Kessel screws all of that. Can't see it happening. Just can't see it.

A better option would be acquiring Eberle, who has been rumoured to possibly on the trade block too. He's right handed shot and would look great as a top 6. Allowing Weise to slide to the third line. I think it's a good move. Trade Perreault who has a year left on his contract and replaces Eberle as a top 6 (possibly) in Edmonton. Offers them some cap space in not signing Eberle to a new contract extension. They have been after DD, but I'm sure they would be quite happy with Eller. I see De Le Rose surpassing him by next year. And they are almost the same type of player as it sits right now. In exchange The Habs get a second round pick. And get rid of Perreault, which Bergeron loves to do, as he believes in the kids coming up anyway. So...

Eberle and a 2nd round pick, For Lars (who is under a nice contract with upside and gets a shot as a second line centre in Edmonton) and Perreault. I think it's a win-win for both teams in regards to needs and personnel needed in the next two years and beyond.

The Habs are loaded with left handed shots but def need more right handed shots. It's a win-win. And Eberle should not be impossible to sign to an extension at a reasonable price. Not a whole lot more than Lars. And space will be freed up with a rookie salary on a lower line for Perreault's contract.

Lastly, if we can't make this deal happen, then renting two way right winger Doan, for a last run or two at a Cup for him before he retires, would be a great rental. Give up Perreault if they would take him. Which I think they would. Otherwise, A kid like Carr, who's turning it up a notch now in the AHL, would likely be of interest for them. They are losing Doan anyway. They might ask for Andrighetto. Which would be a decent trade both ways. Andrighetto has quite fallen behind Hudon, Thomas, and Rose, and possibly more. Maybe they ask for Thomas, and that would be a decent release for a savvy vet like Doan who can help on the pk and would fill out the top 6. He would be a very nice complement on Pleks line. Doan is still one of the very best two way players available.

These are my first two choices for trades. And are all salary cap efficient and feasible without sacrificing long term gains and being restricted by salary cap restrictions; as Bergeron has created nicely.

I could not help myself. Your hate is on. I am a westerner who has been following the HAbs faithfully and passionately for 38 years, since I was 6 years old. I've tried to move to Montreal twice. But not yet.

1. Yes, the best move MB could make to upgrade his team would be to fire his current coach. You upgrade your roster significantly by hiring someone who uses the players we have in roles that get more out of them. That means not press-boxing Sekac, not using Malhotra, not playing Weise and Prust in the top 9, not ignoring Eller's offensive skill and abilities as a center iceman, not shuffling multiple players' linemates AND positions throughout the year so they can't build up chemistry, and so on... MT continues to make error after error and get away with it, and this team's performance remains far belowarrow-10x10.png its potential. yet that fact is lost upon many, simply because Carey Price and Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban and our shoot-out specialists have bailed out the squad with heroic performances on many a night.

2. Despite having Markov, Subban, Beaulieu, and Gonchar, I wouldn't be comfortable going into the playoffs with that as my top 4. I don't want to see Beaulieu bumped from the starting 6, but I would like to see some insurancearrow-10x10.png against his lack of experience as well as the fact we're leaning on a lot of guys on the wrong side of 30. Come playoff time, that may well catch up to us. The problem is that the guys who remain available on the market don't seem to me to be an upgrade. Petry, to my eye, is basically no better or worse than Tom Gilbert, and he's the name we've heard of the most. Bogosian would have been a guy who could have helped. Myers perhaps to a lesser degree. Both those guys are possibly off the market now. Yandle would be an interesting pick-up, but he's not a rental. Green is a player I have no interest in. Neither is Michalek. So the bottom line is that yes, we need an upgrade but no, I don't see a good fit out there in terms of names being thrown around by the media. Unless MB can pull off a surprise, adding another bottom pairing guy is not a priority to me.

3. On wing, we have definite needs. Here is where a rental like Jagr or Iginla or someone of that ilk could make sense. That being said, I think the better tradearrow-10x10.png is for MB to go after someone who can help us past this year. We made a splash with the Vanek trade last season, but we can't afford to be dealing away a top prospect or pick every year unless we do something to make it worth taking that risk, and I don't have enough faith in MT to wager on him right now. So unless there's a new coach/system that shows me we are a legitimate contender that won't be run out of the playoffs if we lose Carey again, I don't know that this is an all-in situation for MB in terms of a rental. If you can pull Jagr out for a 3rd rounder, I'm all for it. If getting someone is too costly, we're better off looking for a hockey trade. In that respect, we may well find a willing partner in Chicago or Pittsburgh or LA or so on. Some of the better teams will be up tight against the cap next year and may be happy to deal us a better player for an established young veteran with a better cap hit (think Eller, Gallagher, Emelin, Desharnais, or so on).

Just looking at paragraph one, I want to offer my version and a reality check. As I could not agree more.

Firstly, Lars. Good centreman who can lay the body and has nice two way game. He will likely never be a top 6. And frankly he is probably better suited to the wing iMO. He has weak on ice vision, not a great passer, and isn't a particularly strong stick handler, although he used his length nicely. Those odd dangles deceive many. Often he does not handle the puck well at all.

Sekac is going to be a fine player. But hockey has caught up to him this year. He needs some rest. He has hit the wall. It's obvious to me.

Malholtra. Probably will not be around next year. Almost guaranteed. But, He is one the team for defensive zone face offs and PK. thats perfect for a fourth line centre. And come playoffs it will be desperately needed at times. For the amount of ice time het gets, he's a major shot blocker and wins face-offs. He's a guy you want in a one goal game, and a face-off win is critical inside your blueline. That's why he's on the team. It's that simple. And it's needed.

Prust and Wiese offer some grit and are two very good two way players. It's not always about shot gun scorers on the top two lines. Ask Edmonton how that game plan has worked. When needed, these two have filled in nicely. The plan was for Perreault. He is hurt and under performing when healthy. Teams could do worse. DO you not realise how good these guys are at two way hockey and along the boards? Pleks and and whoever he plays with, are more than happy to have some grit and responsible wingers, when needed.

MT is the best coach the Habs have had in 20 years. He manipulates the roster wonderfully and timely.

Bergeron is showing to be a stud of a GM.

Great teamwork, just like the guys on the ice.

OK,,, which high scoring RW is out there, that is available, that won't "decimate" our team?

If Stamkos was up for grabs,,, would you go after him? Of course you would, but it would also decimate our team and help the Bolts.

Same diff, IMO.

Not so sure it could be considered the same thing. For whatever reason, Kessel comes with questions attached. Do we sacrifice the chemistry of the team by dealing away the one or two core pieces it would take to make that trade? We most likely would need to do just that to get a quality RW,,, so the question would be,,, can we afford to weaken ourselves in another position to strengthen us at RW with an unknown gamble like Kessel?

Like FL said "high risk, high reward".

5 scouts at the leafs/Panthers game according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period

"20 scouts/mgmt guys repping 14 teams for FLA/TOR tonight: MIN (2), LA, MTL (5), CHI (2), EDM, BOS, STL, OTT, WPG, CAR, DAL, VAN, COL, NAS"

So, we have 5, reps at the game tonight. Huh,,, some serious scouting going on.

BTW,,, Sportsnet/Kypreos, is saying that the Kessel to Florida rumour is squashed.

I'm a little tentative about that approach after the Gomez fiasco. I don't mind adding a Vanek type player for the price we paid last year, but taking on another long term commitment is another thing altogether. I pass.
