Canadiens acquire forward Devante Smith-Pelly from the Anaheim Ducks in return for Jiri Sekac

I really, really liked what Sekac was doing, but I know next to nothing about Smith-Pelly so I'm not really qualified to offer any kind of opinion here whatsoever :P. I just hope that our new acquisition can find a place in our lineup. He'll probably end up with Patches-DD at some point - who knows, maybe we'll stumble on to something?

I will add, though, that I don't think that Sekac had reached his potential here yet. I think he'll be a productive player for the Ducks, and I wish him well.

I actually don't mind this trade at all. Here's why.

Sekac, as many of you know, has a higher offensive potential than DSP. However, MB isn't done here. MMW, we lost Sekac, and added a young winger with a ton of size and tenacity. The ONLY way this trade makes sense is when MB locks up another offensive threat.

It's a bummer to see Sekac go, because he won a lot of us over. But at the same time, the way we are currently playing, the way Price is playing, this could be our year. Adding some grit/size to our top 9, and another offensive minded winger could help us tremendously in the playoffs.

I take all of this back if MB doesn't lock up a goal scorer, but from what we've seen of him so far I'd say it's premature to knock this trade. We don't know what is actually behind the scenes here.

Ducks fans put Smith-Pelly slightly above Bourque in their depth chart. Thanks, Michel!

"I for one am surprised that DSP leads the team in hits, because he only seems to get in a noticeable one every 20 games or so."

"Sekac has 2nd line upside while DSP has barely been a serviceable 4th liner this season."

Yikes. I dont like this deal on paper.

Its not that I dont think Smith-Pelly cant be useful: he has the potential to be a very strong player (tough to say if he'll reach that or not) - but Sekac, imho had a great chance to be a top 6 player. I guess time will tell. MB & his scouts seem to be good evaluators of talent so clearly they see something in SP they want but I just am surprised it cost us Sekac to get him.

It's really tough to say what Bergevin's endgame is. I, too, initially thought that this must be leading to bigger things. Then I realized that I always think that. And it usually never happens.

Well, that's discouraging. Let's hope the Anaheim fans have it wrong.

We give up a skilled threat, with hands and grit because our so called coach prefers favouritism over ability.

This will be that trade that we are all screaming about in a year, when Sekac shows his true potential while playing for a real coach who gives him ice time and a set line.

Bad move.

Yikes. While I presume there's good reasoning behind this move, I hope it doesn't come back to haunt us. Sekáč's potential seems much higher.

That said, from Hockey's Future scouting report on Smith-Pelly:

A somewhat stocky player, Smith-Pelly earned a reputation as a strong player going to the net, battling along the boards and taking the body all over the ice. He also elevated his game in key situations.

And the Ducks forum:

when DSP wants to hit, he crushes you

Take a look at the highlights from last night and focus on the second Detroit goal. DSP skated himself out of position to make a hit and then coasted back towards the net while the goal is scored.

Hmm..

Look for Sekac to have a hat trick on March 4th.

Well, he's going to play for an NHL-level coach in Anaheim, so I don't doubt it could happen.

Also, isn't this move totally opposed to our team needing offensive capabilities? People are saying Sekac has more offensive upside... We need scoring. I'm not sure I understand this move.

Smith-Pelly has 17 points this season (5-12). According to Behind the Net, he's spent 37.9% of his ice time with Ryan Getzlaf, and 27% with Ryan Kessler. 14:39 average time on ice this season.

Sekáč has 16 points this season (7-9). 46.8% of his ice time was with Brandon Prust. 34.9% was with Emelin. 13:49 average time on ice.

So, one more point playing around a minute more on average with Getzlaf and Kessler.
