I don't think voters gave PK Subban his due, because in the big picture, I think he had a better season than Karlsson (the big picture being how many things Subban did well on a team with one of the worst systems in the league). That being said, despite the fact that Karlsson's defensive woes aren't talked about as much as his offensive skill is hyped, he's a great player and I can live with his winning the Norris.

The award that bothers me more is Bob Hartley winning the Adams. Like Therrien, he's a rah-rah guy with very little in the tactical department and the advanced stats support that he got lucky more than winning because of his system or coaching. This was the case of voters just looking at the team's jump in the standings than the actual contribution of the coach. With all the statistics and analysis available right now, voters need to be more informed than that. I could have lived with Vigneault or Laviolette winning, but Paul Maurice was in my view the most deserving guy, and you absolutely have to have given some sort of acknowledgement to guys like Babcock and Quenneville over Hartley. Also a farce that Carlyle got a vote despite being fired from a bottom feeder halfway through the season. Don't know who has votes in Toronto, but wouldn't be surprised if that was some Toronto media fool like Al Strachan, Damien Cox, or so on who threw that vote that way. That person should in effect be removed from the voting process for life if they're going to so obviously make a biased and undeserved choice like that.

And lastly, congratulations to Carey on being given what he deserved after one of the best seasons in recent NHL history. At least voters recognized here that Carey carried this team all year.

(1) I think Karlsson won the Norris in the last month of the season when the Sens put they're playoff push.

(2) I thought Capuano for the Isles should have been the winner of coach of the year.

No matter who wins what next year PLEASE dont hire the same host for the ceremony, what an idiot. I think he was he only one laughing at his bad joke... You know, when Jonathan Toews is funnier than you, perhaps comedian is not the right career choice for you

He was brutal eh?

He was ok hosting the ESPY's last year but my God he was awful last night.

I did like the skit with him and CP asking the fans who should win the Hart and most of them not even recognizing Price.

I had to mute it, he was SOOOO bad. If he is the best the NHL can get with all of their millions, then someone needs to go.

Totally. there are 2 adds to that: 1) Karlsson has actually improved his defensive game a lot. I dont think he's as well rounded a player as PK (but its close) but he is still very much deserving of the award. 2 ) People forget that Subban played almost the entire season next to Markov while Karlsson had some really horrendous partners at times. I would have liked for PK to have won it, but like you I can live with EK as the winner. I am sure PK will get another one very soon. Im glad that Doughty didnt win because frankly I think he was a step down from either of the other 2 (although still very very good) last season.

Agreed on all points.

Yeah, im not sure how Rob Riggle got that gig. He is best known as a bit actor in a number of VERY BAD movies. The Other Guys, Let's Be Cops, Dumb & Dumber To, Step Brothers etc. At least he was in The Hangover and has a reoccurring role on Modern family but in those cases a very small part plays out ok... but as the host? Oh man.

So, the only thing I missed was Price picking up 3 awards.

I think Karlsson's most regular partner was Marc Methot, who lacks the offensive upside of Markov but who is probably a superior defensive player. Markov has veteran savvy, but he gets caught out of position a fair bit. Subban was definitely carrying Markov, and we've seen first-hand that Markov can't carry a pairing any more by himself. Markov's the better puck mover, but Methot allowed Karlsson to jump into the rush a lot, and frankly, Karlsson jumping into the rush as the trailer was how he was most dangerous.

As I said, Karlsson's a great player, he's easily a top 5 defenceman in the league, and he's not an undeserving winner. You can easily make an argument for him. The only thing the Karlsson-Subban issue brings to light is how each is viewed by the media. Every time Subban makes a defensive miscue, it's blown up as "he's a selfish player" or "he's too risky" whereas we saw Karlsson make even more huge errors defensively and they're just kind of dusted under the rug. When Subban was up for the Norris two years ago, a lot of people complained that he got too many of his points on the PP and that it nullified his legitimacy. This year, Subban scored at ES and Karlsson was the one who racked up PP points, and what did we get? Not a peep from anyone anywhere about Karlsson being a PP specialist who didn't play the penalty kill and so on... I think Subban should have won two years ago, and as I said, I'm fine with Karlsson winning this season. But Subban clearly gets judged on a harsher scale than Karlsson does. Furthermore, I can buy Subban finishing behind Karlsson but not behind Doughty, who is obviously a stud but who benefited greatly from the system he was in. Put Doughty or Karlsson on Team Therrien, and I'm not sure either guy has as good a season as Subban had this year.
