we will find out just how good of a coach he is now. :P
honestly, i think this is going to help immensely in toronto. they are not as horrible a team as it appears on paper. I think Mike will sort things out in a hurry.

I hate to see them have success but all the sweeter when we beat them ;)

Hard to make a steak sandwich when all you have is peanut butter and jam in the cupboard.

Good on Mike squeezing retirement money out of the Leafs. Not often you see a team hire a coach before a GM.

The division's just going to get harder from here on out. I can't help but think that wasting these last two years is going to sting quite a bit.

Yes it is...and sadly...with MT at the helm and the boys' lack of a good or even decent O..the playoffs "may" also be a distant future for awhile ..that is IF Carey has a bad year....but it is Carey, so....

I'll reserve judgment until they get a GM. Most (if not all) GMs hire their own coach. There "could be " conflicts between the new GM and Babcock.

Yes, this is odd, eh? I mean most GMs would love to have Babcock on the staff but its still very odd to go out of order get him first.... not to mention the fact that he will most likely be making a lot more $$ than whatever GM they hire ;)

There's the thing, Jed. "If" there's a conflict,,, the new GM will know that Shanny will keep Babcock, and fire the GM. A perilous spot to be in, to be sure.

It's somewhat odd for sure, but if they're spending THAT much money on Babcock, I'm sure they're going to 'accomodate' him in some way and hire a GM he's comfortable working with. But hey, it's Toronto, you never know :D

Apparently, the laffs talked to Boucher as well.

"After the Maple Leafs reportedly fell out of favor with Babcock's camp earlier this week, former Lightning coach Guy Boucher was flown to Toronto from Switzerland, where he was coaching in the Swiss National League, for a two-day interview with Leafs executives. Boucher and the Leafs began contract talks Wednesday morning to name him their next coach, according to TVASports.ca.

Then Babcock called.
The TVA report said a Leafs executive left the meeting with Boucher at that time to speak with Babcock, who, according to multiple reports, used a contract offer from the Sabres as leverage for a deal with Toronto, his preferred destination. The Sabres, thinking they had a deal in place with Babcock, were offering amount and term similar to the contract he received with the Leafs."

The Toronto Sun tabloid had 14 pages of Babcock coverage in its sports section. The Leafs took out a full-page ad in the Toronto Star, saying "Welcome to Toronto, Mike." The same slogan adorned the electronic backdrop to the new conference.

TSN headlined its live coverage "Babcock Era Begins."

Yup,,,,and all the hypocrites are claiming they're in for the long haul rebuild. The first 4 game winning streak and they'll be printing off Cup banners. MMW. Never gets old in Hogtown.

He'll either get them the cup,,,or be just another laffs coach.

Every year for the past 48 years the Laffs have brought in someone, whether coach or player, who is portrayed as the saviour. Babcock is just the latest "saviour".

I couldn't let this go. I read it in the comments section of our local paper. Thought some of you might get a kick out of it.

"Babcock only signed after Shanahan promised him the months of April and May off for the duration of his contract."
