in vino veritas as a wise man once said. i can certainly relate hahaha

I had my leaf fan uncle over for christmas tonight, and he is ribbing me about our failure, and I blamed dear old coach, and he says

" your nuts he's great! you guys just can't score, galchenyuk is the only guy doing anything these days"

annnnnd his line gets the least ice. conversation over.

I mean, even Leafs and Bruins fans are saying that about Galchenyuk. My best friend here is a B's fan, said the same thing out of nowhere the other day. I told him he's getting 3rd line minutes, etc. and then he laughed and replied: "Maybe you should fire that coach and then rehire him again."

It's ludicrous what Therrien is doing. Then again, Boston shouldn't laugh. They probably know first-hand how they ran Joe Thornton and then Tyler Seguin and then Dougie Hamilton out of town... so they've given up their fair share of young elite talent.

If Montreal trades Galchenyuk and Steven Stamkos isn't coming here signed to a long term contract I will stop watching this team. It seems his name has started appearing in "rumours." Bergevin would have to be losing his mind to trade this kid.

but what if Stamkos "is" signed,,,,,,,,,,,,would you keep watching?

im actually horrified he might get traded. the attitude in this franchise at the moment seems to be back therrien without deferring to logic or any of that nonsense.

A little graph from twitter illustrating how Drouin has pretty good point production and very little ice time. Look who else is in that same lower right quadrant, with even better point production than Drouin and almost just as little ice time? Why it's Alex Galchenyuk. Shows you just how thin the ice Therrien is treading on is... if Drouin's asking for a trade for being given so little ice and producing pretty well, then Galchenyuk might easily have the same feelings about how Therrien is mistreating him.

Oh man. We should be phoning Edmonton about the Leon Draisaitl guy! Dude is better than PPG so far this season!

Ha. Everyone on that team is an "untouchable." Stupid Edmonton. I hope they continue failing for another 10 years.

They surely will. Within a couple of years they wont be able to afford to keep all of their best players - at least a couple of which they should have turned into overall depth because their talent drop off after their top 7 or 8 players is staggering. Its almost inconceivable how bad they are considering the talent they have in their system. A great GM with that roster 2 years ago would have them competing for the cup - a good one would have them respectable at least. But yet they toil away making virtually no trades.

Back on to Galchenuyk: I am glad he remains at centre and i think he and Eller should be joined at the hip right now (they play off each other well and as we saw for that short stint away, chucky is greatly helped by eller's ability to cover defensive blunders). Im still unsure about who i would put on the RW (will they trade for someone? Eller - Galchenyuk - Drouin sounds awesome!!) but so far so good with either Carr or Andrighetto.

Eller isn't cutting it as a 2nd line LW in terms of production. If you take into account that the Galchenyuk line has actually been utilized as the 3rd line, then his production is fine, but then you have Galchenyuk being held back with reduced ice time, which is a negative.

While Desharnais is more suited to a 3rd line center role, having both Galchenyuk and Desharnais as centers creates issues with deployment, as you ideally want to give Galchenyuk the majority of offensive zone draws, but you can't give Desharnais defensive zone draws. So you have those two lines sharing softer deployments, and with our system we generally have more defensive zone draws to account for.

That means we have our 3rd line taking offensive zone draws away from our 1st and 2nd lines, while also having our 1st line taking more defensive zone draws.

What we need to do is remove Desharnais from the equation and return Eller to 3rd line center. While Eller may compensate some, Galchenyuk has been learning and will improve over time. If we were able to provide him with some more offensive talent on his wings and give him the majority of the soft deployment, it would make the learning curve more gradual and improve our offense and balance for at least this season.

I wholeheartedly agree with what you are saying - but - my point about Eller-Galchenyuk as a duo has to do with the fact that I dont believe DD will be out of the equation any time soon. Im quite happy to have Galchenyuk-Plekanec-Eller-Mitchell as my 4 centres. That way, as you've said, Eller goes back to those critical defensive matchups and Galchenyuk's defensive problems are less of a concern/less evident because it means his line will get 'softer' minutes.

The problem with DD is that while he's effective as a 3rd line centre getting easy matchups, he wont be effective as say, eller's winger if that line goes back to tough matchups. He isnt the high end finisher that Galchenyuk needs either. Its a mess that im not sure will be solved until (unless?) MB goes out & not only gets 1 or 2 players to fill holes we have but also - and maybe more importantly - gets rid of a few players who are only effective when used in situations that dont benefit the roster as a whole.

Put him with Pacioretty and Gallagher!

I didnt love him with Patches (+ weise, dsp, etc) but now that Gallagher is back & that line has hustle, Id definitely at least try it.

Assuming MB doesnt make any moves (although i hope he does) what about:

Patches - Galchenyuk - Gallagher - 1st line - top minutes, should be able to handle most matchups - even with Galchenyuk still learning.

DD - Plekanec - Andrighetto - 2nd line - easy minutes - exploitation, softer minutes etc.

Fleischmann - Eller - Carr - tough matchups. maybe a little offense Not sure if Carr can handle that yet - could try DSP, Byron or Weise in that spot.

Gally has provided some devent production but I would consider moving him onto the wing got a while say by game 55 if linemates continue to sstuggle. He looks effevtive on the PP and without the puck ie. setting up for shots and is great with the one on one moves but has struggled all year working give and go's, and can get lost out there when rushing the puck. It tis definietly an asset having Eller on the line but Gally maay need a bit of a break and moreso than his offense it may be defensive zone coverages that influence that decision. He seem a little less constricted on the wing.

I thought he had personal issues. I thought he was through them except to maybe hang up his clothes or something.

Why didn't I say something like a week ago when I noticed it?

I've had girlfriends too.
