vegasrick
I thought Emelin really looked good tonight vs. Pittsburgh. Many solid, clean hits, and was actually in great position charging the net a couple of times. He easily could have scored, but I get the feeling that no one expects him to be in good scoring position so they don't look for him. The rest of the time, I don't think I saw him make a mistake. If he plays like this, he'll be a big part of the team's success.

I was down on him early but last night was easily his best performance in the short season and may be one of his best nights since coming back from injury a couple of years ago. If he can continue to play like this, I have no problem with Emelin-Petry as our 2nd pairing. Ideally id like Beaulieu to get more top 4 minutes but I also understand that Petry may be the best suited to pair up alongside Emelin (if you move Beau to the top 4 then you end up with Emelin-Gilbert as your 3rd pairing & that doesnt always work well). We have some options and if Emelin can keep this up, our defense looks even better than it already has.

If he plays like this, he'll be a big part of the team's success. While I do agree it was probably his best game in a while, he did make 2 memorable errors. When a defenseman shoots from a stationary position, there is no time to watch your shot. If you are taking it with forward momentum, you may want to follow it up, otherwise, you have to immediately get your feet moving again so you don't get caught completely flat-footed. That happened last night and lead to a 2 on 1 against. The defenseman also cannot go for a hit, in the middle of their blueline, when they are breaking out. MAYBE you make that hit on the boards where their options are more limited, but definitely not in the middle of the ice. Another 2 on 1 against. That said, he did some memorable good things as well, including a pretty much perfect bodycheck to break up one play, where he was in good, backing, defensive position and making the hit by the boards. If he can play as well as he did last night, but avoid creating those 2 on 1's, we can stop grumbling about his contract or trading him.
fnveenie
He plays with a lot more confidence when he is physical. This was definitely his best game in recent memory, despite a couple of bad decisions leading to odd-man rushes. Hope to see him keep it up. jennifer_rocket
TSN is sayin that Emelin "could" be ready for the rags game. No need to rush him back. Pateryn has been totally fine since Emelin has been out.
PuckPundit
I'll take Emelin over Pateryn, so that Gilbert can go back to playing on his natural side. The defence becomes balanced again.
jennifer_rocket
Does anyone know the specifics of his NTC?
Habberwacky
I think his mistakes have stood out latley with our lack of scoring and would not be surprised to see him moved. I think Tinordi has done well so far and could be an upgrade over time.

I assume he won't want to leave Montreal at this time.
jennifer_rocket
In the last couple of games we've seen Emelin throw some big open ice hits. I feel like this is the first time we've seen him do this all season. Is he disobeying the coaching staff and just going for the open ice hits again, or was he hesitant to throw big hits this season for some reason? Either way, throwing those crushing hits was a reason he became a fan favorite when he first arrived here. I hope the hitting continues!

I imagine since we saw the same thing happen with Subban, the lack of hits was a coaching edict...in conjunction with the whole, "do anything wrong and you're benched 4 liefffff" concept.
