#39 Mike Condon 2015-2016

He's been excellent to begin the year. I'm so glad the coaching staff/management gave him an actual chance to win the position in camp.

Indeed. We all talked about Fucale but Condon just came out of nowhere & i finally feel a little more confident again when our backup plays.

Here's something I'll bet none of us have thought about, Condon for the Calder. His record is 7-0-1, his GAA is 1.57 (tops in the league, better than the next best at 1.71), his SV% is .940 (good for 4th in the league, slightly behind 3 tied for .945 ). There are 10 more B2B games this season, so he should get at least that many and possibly 20 starts total. There have been 15 Calder winners that were goalie starters for their teams. The lowest amount of GP by a goalie, that had won the Calder is 38 (Brodeur). The lowest GAA by a goalie was 1.99 (Sawchuk). Save % were incomplete as there are none on the list before 1983, when Barrasso won it. The best SV% after 1983 was .926 by Raycroft.

A back-up goalie has never won it.

So, after all of that, could Condon, a backup goalie, win the Calder? If he went 19-0-1, sure. If he went 15-4-1, maybe. If his GAA and SV% were better than most starters,,,,, why not? If he continues to play the way he has been playing (or slightly less), then he should get consideration/nominated for the Calder.

I've always had the opinion, that if a back-up could win 50% of his starts, then he's doing what he should.

JMHO

A positive in this whole Price is injured situation is that Condon is performing well and developing some trade value. Obviously we shouldn't be thinking about trading Condon in the short-term, but this is the beginning of some value creation that might see us trading him in a year or so.

Then again, we said the same thing about Tokarski when he came in and played well in the playoffs. This season, he cleared waivers. When you're talking about career minor-leaguers, their peak values won't last long. A little hiccup in the future, and his value will bottom out again.

If someone wants him and the price is high enough, I would trade him at deadline too

OK,,, let's say that Condon is traded,,,, who will you have as a back-up,,,, Tokes? I would feel that if he was traded, our wins would go down.

I mean its not ideal, but if we're going to get a great player back... RW and C are more important than backup G. Anyway, I don't think his value will increase enough to do that

Kid showing some battle fatigue of late. Another poor start tonight. Price returning soon should give the guy some much needed rest.

Rebound control his biggest weakness.

Condon's rebound control hasn't been great lately, but I suggest it is a side effect of what I consider to be his true weakness.

He is just not calm and settled in his position. He is always moving or about to move. That is further complicated by his increased tendency to play too aggressively.

What I liked about Condon initially, aside from that tendency to "fidget" for lack of a better expression, was that he mimicked Price's style fairly well.

Lately he has looked more like he is emulating Quick with his aggressive play. Quick can pull that off due to his reflexes and starting from solid positioning prior to challenging the puck. Condon does not have the same reflexes or positional awareness required to be successful with that style.

I'm currently questioning whether this is Waite's idea, based on something he has perceived in Condon, or simply wanting a different "kind" of goaltender as a backup to use against teams that Price's style has been less successful against.

Nope, Carey will play. :)

... and a sigh of relief echoed across the Habs' nation, and all was well and right with the world.

I hope we aren't rushing Price back. I would rather lose a handful more games than risk losing Price for another significant stretch later in the season.
